The excitement of the first week of the 2022 season started even before the competitions began with 15 teams pulling out of meets or having their meets canceled due to COVID protocols. Once we made it to the actual gymnastics, the excitement didn’t stop. Michigan, North Carolina and Texas Woman’s were among 11 teams to score their highest season opening total in program history. Highly anticipated freshmen across the country also finally made their debuts—with varying levels of success.
If you missed any of the action, don’t worry! We summarized the highs and lows of each meet in one place with The Dismount. Find superlatives, results, recaps and more below.
Stick of the Week
Katherine LeVasseur, Vault, 10.000
With the first 10.0 of the season, LeVasseur was the undeniable choice for this week’s stick superlative. There’s nothing quite like the combination of power and perfect form. Stern followed up LeVasseur’s 10 with one of her own, giving the Sooners back-to-back perfect marks for the fourth time in program history.
Most Unexpected Glow-up
San Jose State, 195.950
The Spartans were one of the few teams in the MPSF that competed at all last season, but the performances were (understandably) nothing to write home about. However, the team showed just what it could accomplishment with consistent training, obliterating its highest season-opening score in program history with a 195.950, which also stands as its No. 2 score all-time, just shy of the program record 195.975.
Most Victorious Comeback
Michigan State, 195.875
The 11th team to record a program-record season-opening score this weekend, Michigan State notched a near-196 in its first meet since Feb. 7, 2021. The Spartans have had a rough couple of years thanks to the pandemic, but they’re finally poised to show their full potential in 2022 thanks to a healthy roster and strong freshman class that includes former five-star recruit Skyla Schulte. To top it off, the team managed to do all this without star fifth-year all arounder Lea Mitchell, who did not make the trip to California.
Best Meet Day Footwear
Megan Harrington, Illinois State Assistant Coach
In gymnastics, we’re all about the leotards, but that doesn’t stop the coaches from showing out on a weekly basis as well. We knew when we spotted Harrington’s boots on Friday’s SECN+ stream that they had to be a superlative in the dismount. Just look at them!
