Leotard Rankings: NCGA

When the college gymnastics season rolls around, some fans are excited for perfect 10s while others look forward to difficult skills and fun choreography. But we’re not going to lie. While those things are great, we love the leos most of all. And so, we’re back for another season of leotard rankings!

Each week we’re analyzing new designs to find our weekly faves. As always, leos can earn up to three points for design, up to one point each for fabric, sparkle, school spirit, and uniqueness, and up to three points for overall appearance. This week Katie, Talitha, Peri, Naomi, Mary Emma, Tara, Mariah, Mary, and Katherine are joining editor-in-chief Elizabeth for judging.

Don’t agree with our ranking? Make your opinion heard by voting in the fan poll at the end of the article each week or by voicing your thoughts on social media!

La Crosse (almost) always kills the leotard game, especially for a DIII school. It knows it only gets one new one a year, and it really maximizes that. I love the chest design and the subtle pattern on the sleeves, but I wonder if I’d like the overall look even more if the belt wasn’t there and the design sort of faded out into black at the bottom instead? Overall, though, it’s a good look.

Design 2.5/3, Fabric 0.9/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

This looks like a mash-up between something that Alabama and Oklahoma would wear, and I really like it. I love the big open back, and the design has a really nice shape with excellently executed ombre. The pattern on the sleeves being faded and the placement of the logo on the sleeve? *chef’s kiss*

Design 2.4/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.4/3

I like this a lot! The use of the ombre on the chest and the sleeves is gorgeous, and the white belt adds a lovely touch to the design. The open back is also beautiful. I’m not a huge fan of the collar, but overall this leotard is a success.

Another year, another La Crosse leo in the win column. The belt helps to frame the open back, so I’m glad they made it as bold as it is. Also, props for the patterning on the torso having a higher contrast than the pattern on top of the ombre sleeves; it gives this design an elevated feel compared to the densely patterned leos that can be pretty hit or miss.

Naomi: 8.000

Design 2.4/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

I am a big fan of this! The ombre is perfectly executed, and the color combination is fantastic. I love the sparkle pattern on the chest, the high collar, and the open back. This is probably one of the best-executed belts that I’ve seen on a leo, but it’s still a belt, so I have to knock points for that.

Mary Emma Brambila illustrated headshotMary Emma: 9.200

Design 2.7/3, Fabric 1.0/1, Sparkle 1.0/1, School Spirit 1.0/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.7/3

La Crosse continues to win the DIII leo game! I love the ombre, the pattern on the front is nice, and I actually really like the pop of the white belt on the darker fabric.

Tara Graeve Illustrated HeadshotTara: 8.100

Design 2.4/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.9/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

I love this! The open back is lovely, and the belt works well. I’m a big fan of the ombre front and the cascading sparkle pattern. Plus, it has the school spirit with the logo on the arm.

Mariah Dawson illustrated headshotMariah: 7.200

Design 2.1/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.2/3

This is giving Oklahoma a bit with the number of design elements here. Like most Oklahoma leotards, there’s a bit too much going on for my taste, but overall I think it’s a nice look (very DI) and I absolutely love the open back. The ombre on the body is also really well done, but I probably could’ve lived without one or two of the other elements. I don’t think that the subtle design on the sleeves, the white belt, and the chevron-like design around the deep-V are all necessary, and none of them really get a chance to shine with such a busy design.

Mary: 7.800

Design 2.5/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.2/3

OK, I love this in the photos, but I do remember not being as in love with it on screen when watching nationals. I love the back; it’s the perfect amount of open. It looks like it could be a DI leotard, and I think that is one of the most important things I am looking for in these rankings. It’s a beautiful leotard overall!

Katherine Weaver illustrated headshotKatherine: 8.200

Design 2.4/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.6/3

This is a beautiful design. It’s very intricate with a lot of details that work great together. I love the touches of the subtle criss cross on the shoulders, and the chest design is like an abstract feather design. Kudos to La Crosse for coming out with DI quality designs on a regular basis—I could totally see Oklahoma wearing this.

Design 2.0/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2.0/3

I like this a lot! RIC has such a small budget to work with, but it does well with what it has. I like the ombre, and the way the sleeves are incorporated into the design. I also like the back anchor. I don’t love the rhinestone belt, but I don’t hate it either. I just wish the RIC on the chest popped a tad more.

Katie Couldrey headshot newKatie: 6.800

Design 2/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2/3

This isn’t my favorite RIC leotard, but I really like the colors and ombre on this one. There’s plenty of sparkle, but the positioning of the rhinestones on the front makes me think of sports bibs. To me, the RIC lettering is a bit flat, but the anchor on the back gets it lots of school spirit points.

Illustrated headshot of Talitha IlacquaTalitha: 8.700

Design 2.6/3, Fabric 0.9/1, Sparkle 1.0/1, School Spirit 0.9/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

This is a stunning leotard for RIC! I love the use of the ombre on both the sleeves and the body. Many teams use ombre on their sleeves but forget how amazing it looks on the body as well. The use of crystals is elegant and clever, especially on the belt. I wish the big “RIC” was not there on the chest, but oh well…

Illustrated headshot of Peri GoodmanPeri: 7.400

Design 2.2/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

RIC is doing everyone favors by showing how font choices can make or break stoned text; this is a great leo, topped off by that single clever design choice. The collarbone stone clusters also help gradate between the burgundy fabrics above and below them, further heightening the leo.

Naomi: 7.600

Design 2.3/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

I’m a big fan of this! RIC does a great job with its small budget. The ombre body and sleeves are executed very well, and this is one of the best examples of a rhinestone belt I’ve seen. Somehow, the “RIC” on the chest manages to seem subtle and elegant. My only issue is that the back straps really feel like an afterthought.

Mary Emma Brambila illustrated headshotMary Emma: 8.500

Design 2.5/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.9/1, School Spirit 1.0/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.6/3

This is nice! RIC is one of those schools that has a small leotard budget, but it makes the most of what it has. I love the use of ombre on the sleeves AND the body. I like the use of the sparkles in both RIC on the front and the anchor on the back, but I think I would prefer they were switched. Overall, this is a really great design!

Tara Graeve Illustrated HeadshotTara: 6.200

Design 1.8/3, Fabric 0.6/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 1.6/3

This is solid! The ombre is really lovely. I don’t feel like the fabric and design really mesh with the sparkles, but it’s really nice otherwise.

Mariah Dawson illustrated headshotMariah: 6.200

Design 1.6/3, Fabric 0.6/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.9/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.8/3

This is a solid design. Nothing really bothers me about it, but there’s also not anything that I‘m obsessed with. The ombre is probably my favorite part.

Mary: 7.100

Design 2/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2/3

OK, this is pretty, but I cannot get over the execution on the rhinestone RIC on the chest. If you zoom in, the logo is not aligned, and there are many little rhinestone gaps throughout the logo. I like the rhinestoning placement pattern; I think it’s unique and super pretty. I don’t love the faded maroon mesh, though, because it almost comes off as pink to me instead of maroon.

Katherine Weaver illustrated headshotKatherine: 6.300

Design 2.3/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.4/1, Overall Appearance 2.2/3

I love the ombre body and all the sparkles, especially the belt. It’s a pretty shade of red, too; very regal. And how about that little anchor on the back? Super cute! This is a simple but effective design.

Design 2.2/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.2/3

This is good from Winona State! It’s obviously a very simple design, but the elements here are lovely. I love the shade of purple used, the deep, skinny V, and the use of mesh. Winona State is another team that always has some really good leos, especially for its lower budget. I’m always pleased when it comes out with a new one.

Katie Couldrey headshot newKatie: 8.300

Design 2.5/3, Fabric 1/1, Sparkle 0.9/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.8/3

As far as simple leotards go, this one is almost perfect. I love the shade of purple, and it’s got plenty of sparkle.

Illustrated headshot of Talitha IlacquaTalitha: 6.800

Design 2.1/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2.0/3

This is a lovely leotard. It’s a bit too monochromatic for my taste, but it’s a good design for all occasions.

Illustrated headshot of Peri GoodmanPeri: 7.400

Design 2.2/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

Solid purple? Power move. Winona State using purple as the base is a very welcome shift from having it as an accent on its older black leos and allows the color itself to stand in as a design element.

Naomi: 7.000

Design 2/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

This is a simple and common design, but it’s one of my favorites so I’m not complaining. The shade of purple here is excellent, the deep V is well-executed, and I like the high collar. It’s not a leotard I’m likely to remember, but it’s pretty and gets the job done.

Mary Emma Brambila illustrated headshotMary Emma: 7.000

Design 2.3/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.4/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

This is simple but very nice design! I love the shade of purple used, and the sparkles aren’t too overpowering.

Tara Graeve Illustrated HeadshotTara: 7.400

Design 2.2/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.9/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

I love a good purple leo! It’s relatively simple, but I enjoy the deep V and the sparkles really make it pop. Nice work, Winona State!

Mariah Dawson illustrated headshotMariah: 7.200

Design 2.1/3, Fabric 0.9/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.2/3

I’m obsessed with this shade of purple. Despite the monochromatic design, it somehow manages to not be too overpowering yet stands out enough to be a key design element on a leotard that is otherwise quite simple. Lovely job!

Mary: 7.700

Design 2.5/3, Fabric 0.5/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.81, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

This leo is in my top five on the list for sure because I love a simple leo. It’s beautiful in the photos and from afar while watching meets. I love the shade of purple, and the mesh top with rhinestone overlay is so pretty. The only thing I don’t love is how the bra straps and lines are always so visible through the fabric.

Katherine Weaver illustrated headshotKatherine: 5.400

Design 1.4/3, Fabric 0.6/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2.0/3

It’s a nice shade of purple, and I love the sparkles coming closer together as they go down in the V shape. There’s not much that stands out about the design otherwise, but it’s not bad at all.

Utica: 7.100

Design 1.6/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.0/3

This is one of my least favorite stock designs with the triangle side cutouts, but I do like how Utica elevated it with this pretty unique strappy back. There’s a lot going on, but I do like it. I also like the ombre sleeves and back.

Katie Couldrey headshot newKatie: 8.500

Design 2.6/3, Fabric 1/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.6/3

I absolutely love this one; it really stands out. I like a side-fill detail, and although the back has a lot going on, it doesn’t feel too busy to me, as everything is so tied in and connected. There’s loads of sparkle, and the rhinestone Utica looks so athletic and ties in with the whole thing. I’m definitely a big fan of this one.

Illustrated headshot of Talitha IlacquaTalitha: 6.200

Design 1.7/3, Fabric 0.6/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2.1/3

There’s too much going on here for my taste. What I really love about this leotard is the ombre on the sleeves and the back, but I don’t understand why it doesn’t carry over to the front. The orange overlapping straps on the back are lovely, but I wish the back was open instead.

Illustrated headshot of Peri GoodmanPeri: 6.100

Design 1.5/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.9/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.7/3

There’s a lot going on between the faux and legitimate cutouts, and I think that could’ve been mitigated by sticking to two main colors with the third as an accent. A big hurdle Utica runs into with this leo is trying to feature all three colors, similar to three people trying to walk together on the sidewalk.

Naomi: 6.000

Design 1.3/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 1/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.6/3

I loathe side cutouts, therefore this is one of my least favorite stock designs. However, I love the sparkle pattern throughout the leo, the color blocking and the ombre sleeves. I think the back is a little busy, and the tiny white V in the front isn’t my favorite, but it’s a good version of a design I don’t particularly care for.

Mary Emma Brambila illustrated headshotMary Emma: 8.100

Design 2.3/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 1.0/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

I really like this one! The ombre is really pretty, and I like that Utica utilizes both its blue and orange here. I’m not a big fan of the side cutouts, though. I think I’d like it better if it was just solid blue, but overall this is a great design!

Tara Graeve Illustrated HeadshotTara: 8.000

Design 2.4/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.9/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

This is one of my favorite leos of the DIII season! I absolutely adore the ombre and criss-cross back. The side cutouts also work here, and the orange belt accentuates it nicely. Definitely a leo win for Utica!

Mariah Dawson illustrated headshotMariah: 8.200

Design 2.6/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

This is not only my favorite of the looks Utica debuted this year, it’s probably my favorite DIII design of the whole season. The colors are bold and striking, and I love the ombre. The back is stunning and definitely steals the show. There’s also quite a bit of sparkle for a DIII design. My only dislike is the little white V at the neckline. There’s enough happening on this leo that it really doesn’t need any extraneous design elements.

Mary: 5.700

Design 2/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 0.5/3

Ugh. It is so hard for me to rate these because I just hate the orange and blue combo on a leo. That being said, this is one of the better orange and blue leos for Utica. I like this design on the front, but the back is too busy. It does look very high quality in fabric and sparkles.

Katherine Weaver illustrated headshotKatherine: 7.600

Design 2/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 1/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2.6/3

Another winner from Utica! Unlike many, I’m a sucker for the orange and blue combo. There’s a lot going on with the back, but it mostly works for me. I don’t even mind the side cutouts. I honestly don’t have a lot I’d change about this one.

Design 2.0/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

I really like this! The rhinestone pattern on the chest is nice, and the gold really pops. I also like the various fabrics and how they work together. The back is a little boring, but I’m not mad about it either.

Design 2.3/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

I love the cuff details on this, it looks quite regal. I can’t remember seeing another leotard that had an uneven shape going into the mesh, like the wavy/mountainous design on the shoulders at the back, and I really like it. As black leotards go, it’s solid; no complaints here!

Design 2.3/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.9/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

I really like this! The use of crystals on the chest is very elegant, and I love how the design continues on the sleeves. I wish the crystals surrounding the “UWO” on the back were also gold, but overall this is an A+ design we’ll hopefully see often in the future!

Naomi: 6.100

Design 1.5/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.8/3

I really dislike any sort of chest hole, so that automatically gets a big no from me. I also feel like the black around the collar and sleeves feels a bit heavy. But I’m a big fan of the design on the front, the big UWO on the back, and the sparkle placement on the sleeves.

This is fine. I do like the use of the yellow rhinestones that pop on what would otherwise just be a plain black leo. It’s giving Iowa.

Design 1.8/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.1/3

I’m not generally a fan of chest holes, and this one is no exception. Other than that, it’s pretty solid. I like how much the lettering stands out on the back and the keyhole detail. The way the sleeve cuffs coordinate with the sparkle design on the front is also a nice touch.

Mary: 7.300

Design 2/3, Fabric 1/1, Sparkle 0.9/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2/3

The back of this leo is stunning. It’s the perfect amount of open, and the rhinestones making out the UWO logo is a great touch. The front is a bit underwhelming but not upsetting. The chesthole isn’t my favorite, but it went for something new and exciting, so I’ll give it that.

Katherine Weaver illustrated headshotKatherine: 6.300

Design 1.8/3, Fabric 0.6/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2/3

The keyhole back and mostly black body are two elements that make this a little too vintage for me, but the sparkles on the front update the look for sure. The UWO is a nice dash of school spirit, too.

I like this more than Whitewaters most recent leotards, but I’m not obsessed with it. This style of deep V neckline that’s become popular lately just has something off about it to me. However, the shade of purple and fabric used for it is lovely, and I think the belt is flattering.

Katie Couldrey headshot newKatie: 7.000

Design 2.3/3, Fabric 0.9/1, Sparkle 0.6/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2/3

Oooh I really love this, maybe because it’s purply-blue and I love a purply-blue leotard! The shade of purply-blue is quite unusual, and although you could accuse the design of being a bit unimaginative, I actually really like it. The Warhawk logo gives it a strong school feel, and I don’t think there’s too much to object to—just nothing that wows me either.

Design 2.2/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.9/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.0/3

I’m not a fan of this stock design, probably because I don’t like the deep V trend. The result is lovely here, though. The leotard is formed from three different materials, but they all work well together. The use of crystals is excellent, and the belt is my favorite part. Overall, this is a fine piece that will be used for years to come.

Something about this deep purple works amazing with the plunging neckline for me, and the combo of the belt and stoned neck help bring continuity to the design. The Warhawk works well on the sleeve, but since it’s sitting there by itself, the arms feel a bit underdone.

Naomi: 6.000

Design 1.6/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.6/3

The shade of purple here and the use of sparkles really catch the eye, which I love. I like the coordination between the belt, neckline, and sleeve cuffs. I’m just a little thrown off by the color of the deep V, but on the whole it’s a simple, flattering leotard for Whitewater.

Design 2.0/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.3/1, Overall Appearance 2.0/3

I love the shade of purple, but overall this design is meh. I feel like I’ve seen very similar leos from Whitewater, so this didn’t strike me as being a new one at first. There’s nothing particularly wrong about it; I just don’t love it.

Tara Graeve Illustrated HeadshotTara: 7.300

Design 2.1/3, Fabric 0.6/1, Sparkle 0.9/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.4/3

I love how the deep V works with the rhinestone design! Adding the belt below that is a nice touch as well. The front and back work well together to form a cohesive design. It’s also purple, which makes it that much better.

Design 2.1/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.1/3

I LOVE this shade of purple, and the sparkle design works great with the deep V neckline. I also like the rhinestone belt and how it coordinates with the rhinestones on the collar and cuffs. I wish the deep V was mesh like the sleeves, though. Having it be a different fabric just makes it feel a little out of place.

Now this is so pretty. The shade of purple is stunning and so shiny. I like the deep V and how sparkly the leo is. The logo on one of the mesh sleeves is the icing on the cake for me. Put it in the Louvre.

This is not my favorite stock design, but it’s fine here. The royal purple is such a beautiful color to work with, and I like that they leaned into it. The back is probably my favorite part with the sparkles going up to the keyhole. I feel like I don’t have a lot that’s good or bad to say about it otherwise.

It’s simple yet effective. I love how the colored back straps are the focal point. The rest of the leotard being so plain really makes those pop. I also like how they are made from mystique fabric, making them stand out even more under the lights of the arena or gym. To elevate this even more I might have wanted to see some green and gold rhinestones, but otherwise this is a good one from Brockport.

This is how you do a basic leotard well! It has the same back strap issue that annoyed me on the new Sylvia P UCLA “In Bloom” leotard in that the gold straps come from the ribs and not the side of the back opening. I wish they’d added a bit of color on the rhinestones, too, but other than that, there’s not much wrong with it.

I like this a lot! The front is simple, but I love the matte black and the use of crystals. The back reminds me of Alaska, but I love how the team’s colors stand out. Overall, this leotard is a success. I hope it will be worn for years to come!

Brockport has been putting on a masterclass lately in “black leo with a dash of school colors” without falling into the comfort zone of mid-2010’s stock designs. This one in specific pairs matte and mystique fabrics to let the mystique and stoning be the center of attention. Plus, I think the black makes the fabric choices even more legible than trying to pair a matte green with the mystique straps.

This is how you make the most of a very simple leo design! The colored back straps really pop against the back, and the use of a shiny fabric helps even more. It’s a well-executed sparkly deep V, and I’m a big fan of the crystalized high neck. It’s not a leo that takes many risks, but it pulls off what it’s trying to do extremely well.

I absolutely LOVE the strappy back, but the rest of the leo is a bit underwhelming to me. I’m just not usually a fan of plain black leos, and from the front, that’s all it looks like it is.

Less is more with this one! If this was just the front, I’d be complaining that there wasn’t enough color, but I love the colors incorporated in the back straps.

This isn’t my favorite Brockport leo of all time, but it manages to have a lot of impact with very few elements. The sparkle design on the front is a nice focal point, and the back straps bring in a bit of school spirit, though I would’ve liked to see more incorporated into the design somewhere.

Mary: 4.900

Design 1.5/3, Fabric 0.1/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.7/3

It’s a simple, black leo, so I should love this in theory but I can’t get over the fabric. It looks low quality and shows every bone in the gymnast’s body. Fabric aside, I am in love with the back. The gold and green straps are stunning and add the perfect hint of color on a black leo.

The back looks great; I love it as the only pop of color against the black. And I always appreciate encrusted sparkles, especially at the collar like that; it makes up for the relatively simple front. It’s very understated, but it works.

I don’t like this as much as some of Brockport’s other recent designs, but I do still like it. The darker shade of green is a favorite of mine, but I wish the yellow wasn’t so loud. Without the ombre sleeves, this leo would feel very throwback in its design.

There are a lot of lovely bits about this, and I’m scoring it high for school spirit as it’s incorporated on both the front and the back in a very clear way. The sleeves are my favorite, but I wish the crystal color on the back could have been different to make it pop a little more. Overall, this is a nice leotard, though, and it looks like it’s very comfortable.

This is a nice leotard with a retro feel. The yellow Vs are not my favorite, but I like that the yellow stands out without overpowering the design. The golden eagle made of crystals on the chest makes this leo all the more unique and interesting.

Hello green! I’m enjoying how the green being matte allows the eagle to take center stage, complemented with a similar yellow on the sides. The color matching isn’t lost on me either, with the yellow accents deviating from stock yellow so as not to overshadow the logo.

Naomi: 6.600

I like the shade of green used here and the sparkly golden eagle on the chest. The ombre sleeves are excellent, and the sparkle placement is noticeable without being overwhelming. My main issue is the bright yellow Vs, especially because they attach to the neckline separately from the main body of the leotard on the back. They throw off an otherwise sleek and simple design.

This is nice! Throwback leos seem to be a trend this season, and this appears to be Brockport’s take on it. I do like the ombre sleeves, as they add a nice touch to what is a pretty plain leo.

I LOVED the new design Brockport debuted last season, and this is another solid one to add to the closet! My only complaint is the back. I wish the cutout was placed lower and that the lettering stood out more. Other than those small details, I really like this one.

I like this! I like the dark green and the fabric they used to create the design. It has a good amount of sparkle and the classic eagle head. My only complaint is how the yellow design cuts right in the armpit and how high it’s cut in the back. I think the cutout could be bigger and a little lower to be a bit more flattering. Overall, this is a good leo and has a very DI look.

We’ve seen this stock design from Stanford in 2023 and Western Michigan this season, but I think this may be my favorite version of it. While I don’t love the chest stripes, I do think using a dark, solid fabric for the overlapping design on the front and back works. I also love the ombre sleeves—Eau Claire always does such a good job with its difficult school colors. The only thing I don’t like as much is that the mesh on the body can get a bit booby when the gymnasts’ arms are up.

Katie Couldrey headshot newKatie: 7.400

Design 2/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.6/1, School Spirit 1/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

This is another good one from Eau Claire. I’m not sure about the back where it goes from solid to mesh around the cutout, but the front is a really well-executed version of this stock design.

Design 2.3/3, Fabric 0.9/1, Sparkle 0.4/1, School Spirit 0.9/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2.0/3

This is way too busy a design for my taste, but I must say that I quite like the result. The ombre sleeves are obviously lovely, and the overlapping straps are elegant. I’m not a fan of the yellow stripey part on the chest, and I find the crystals decorating the straps unnecessary. But overall, a solid new leo for Eau Claire!

As much as I love bold yellow (and I do love how much it comes up in Eau Claire’s wardrobe), this misses the mark by using it on a design so sparsely. The sleeves are great, but the yellow can unify the piece further by appearing more on the torso and back.

Naomi: 5.200

Design 1/3, Fabric 0.5/1, Sparkle 0.6/1, School Spirit 1/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.5/3

I may be bringing the mood down a bit, but this is one of my least favorite stock designs, and I still don’t like it here. I think there’s just a little too much going on, and the mesh gap at the stomach is a big no for me. I also wish the ombre sleeves had a little more blue and a little less yellow. The logo on the shoulder is a bit too big and jarring as well. This leo is a lot, and I’m not 100% on the end result.

I don’t like this stock design, though this is not a bad iteration of it. The back is nice, and I LOVE the ombre sleeves and the colors used. I just don’t love the front. The striped design, the crisscross, and the mesh on the belly are elements I don’t think I would love in isolation, let alone together. It’s quite overwhelming.

I think I am in the minority when I say I am not in love with this. It’s a lot for me. I like the gold rhinestones on the blue crossed fabric; I think that is really nice. I don’t love the yellow diamond in the front, as it seems kind of random, and I especially don’t like the downward lines in that yellow diamond. The sleeves are beautiful, though, and I like the logo on the shoulder.

This is one of my favorites of the bunch. It doesn’t even feel like a stock design, maybe because the neon yellow is such an uncommon color. I love it here, and the navy ombre blending into it on the sleeves is gorgeous. The school logo on the bicep is also a great but not overpowering dash of school spirit.

This is my favorite Utica leo of the season. The matte white is great, and the ombre sleeves are to-die-for. The back sort of ruins the overall look for me—those straps are really unnecessary, especially over fabric. Otherwise, this is a near-perfect leo.

This feels super athletic and is very on brand with the school colors. The pattern of the rhinestones on the front feels a bit odd. The back is…a lot, and it feels like it takes away from the simplicity that a really great athletic-feel leotard should have.

I don’t dislike this leotard, yet I can’t get over the fact that it seems to be made of a patchwork of different things. The front has a lovely athletic feel, but the ombre sleeves have a different lyrical one. The white of the chest doesn’t match the white of the sleeves. and the orange straps on the back are overwhelming. It’s a fine leo but with some question marks.

This wants to be a throwback leo so badly, and it’s tricky for me to be on board since it’s also one of the program’s first few. I also wish there were either way more orange or way less; it’s not a color that’s easy to pull off halfway.

Naomi: 6.000

I’m always a fan of a matte, athletic leo. This is Utica’s version. I wish the back was more open, but I like the bright orange against the matte white. I also wish the leo focused more on the “UTICA” across the chest and cut down on the other wavy sparkles. But it’s still a solid leo.

I really love the concept of this. The white chest with the sparkle pattern accenting “Utica” is nice, and the ombre sleeves are great. It’s screaming for an open back with the criss-cross orange pattern, but it’s not there. If it was an open back, I’d love this even more!

I like the idea of this (matte white athletic designs are some of my favorites), but I have some issues with the execution. I wish the shoulder seams were cut diagonally toward the neckline because the bodice just looks like a white tank top with mesh sleeves attached as an afterthought. I also wish the back was open. It looks a bit restrictive with the orange straps placed up so high. The front logo could also stand out more, and if the sleeves had a bit more orange incorporated into the ombre, the chunky orange back straps wouldn’t even be necessary. Overall it’s a good leotard, but I would just do it differently.

I feel like such a hater with these Utica leos, but I really can’t get behind this. The white top is boring, and the bright orange straps are too thick, too high, and feel out of place. The sleeves are pretty, but the body just isn’t it for me. I wish the white had more rhinestones on it or just popped a little more.

I’m having a hard time discerning what the orange is on the back; is it part of the design, or is it just back straps but really high up? I don’t love that part, even though it’s orange, since it just feels thrown in there, but the rest looks nice. The criss cross and ombre wrists at the end of an otherwise simple sleeve are a nice touch.

The school spirit is off the charts! While I don’t think the execution is perfect here, I love a DIII school using some creativity in its designs. If any of my fellow editors give anything other than a perfect score for school spirit I will disown them! I love that it was designed by senior Izzy Breitkreutz, but the execution of the concept just doesn’t fully work for me. I think the school crest could have been better used as a design element on the back of the leotard if it didn’t have the lower back cutout, as it looks quite unflattering on the front. Full marks for how bold this design is, though.

I’m quite torn here. I’ll give A+ to the school spirit, but I find the chest design quite unflattering. I also don’t like the fact that there are three different shades of black in the leo. Overall, I love the creativity, but I’m not a fan of the result.

School spirit meets high visibility vest but in the best way possible. The Gusties are the only black and yellow team that’d be able to pull it off, and it’s so daring that I have to respect it. Hopefully their next iteration will also have yellow instead of gold!

Do I like this? Not particularly. But do I respect it? Absolutely. Gustavus said you’re going to have school spirit, and you’re going to like it. The color blocking and fabric choices prevent this leo from becoming too ridiculous, but I do think the yellow strips are just a bit too thick and bulky. This is definitely a leo that I’ll remember, though.

Full points for school spirit here, and I really appreciate the guts that Gustavus had here by sticking its school logo right on the front. It gives George Washington face leo vibes. That being said, I don’t love the placement of the logo, as it looks awkward on the chest. I think it would have looked better on the back, but I do love the yellow straps! It really pops on the black, and I do love it when schools incorporate yellow.

I’m not personally a fan of this, but it scores high on school spirit and uniqueness. I think this particular logo would look better on the back of a leo. I also don’t like the way the yellow stripes don’t extend onto the back at the shoulder seams. It feels like a missed opportunity to provide a little cohesion. I strongly prefer Gustavus’ other design that it regularly wears.

This leo is a bit of an enigma, because the design is sort of a throwback to the mid-2000s while the elements used to make the design are modern with the sparkles, shiny fabric, and mesh. Overall it’s fine, but I prefer Stout’s other recent leos a bit better.

There’s a lot going on in this leotard, and I’m not sure all the pieces work well together. The Vs by the armpits give it an athletic and retro feel, but the inverted crystal cascade is modern and lyrical. Quite surprisingly, I like the shiny gray belt. This is fine but pretty unremarkable. I actually prefer Stout’s other leo to this one; it just has a bit more pizazz. The colors actually look like something New Hampshire might wear. My favorite part is probably the sparkle design on the front. Everything else is just kind of there.

I really like these colors and do like the overall design. Similar to the Brockport leo, I just don’t love how the panels on the side cut into the armpits. I love the rhinestone pattern, but the mesh on the sleeves looks very low quality and like it could tear at any second.

I actually am not as bored by this as I would have initially expected. I really like the material of the body; it’s shimmery and attention-grabbing. The sparkly belt is great, of course, too. Sure, there could probably have been one less type of fabric used, but I don’t think it takes away from the nice look.

This definitely has a throwback feel, but I also like it. The mesh and the way it is cut on the arms gives an athletic feel, too, which I love. The orange rhinestones are also great. The back straps are a bit odd and tight, but I don’t hate them. Overall not a bad leo for Utica’s first ever but also not the best in its set.

I’m not a fan of skin tone mesh. However, I do love the use of color in rhinestones, so big tick for the orange ones. The back of this leotard confuses me. I’m assuming it’s functional, but the straps look so restrictive. It’s certainly unique, but I wish it just had a plain back with the top part of the back open.

I thought this was a George Washington leotard when I first saw it, but other than that, I quite like it. My favorite part is the back; the position of the straps is so unique. I also like the use of crystals on the front. I don’t like the nude color of the chest and sleeves, but overall, this is an interesting and unusual leo.

I wish I could score the front and not the back! The front is lovely and is an example of a more dated design kept modern with the fabrics and stoning. The back’s asymmetry is exacerbated by the front, making it a no from me where it may have looked great on an overall busier leotard.

Design 1.3/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 1.3/3

This leotard is a tale of two halves. If I look at the front, it’s solid if unspectacular. I love the crystal waterfall and the incorporation of orange crystals, and the leotard has a great athletic look. The back, however, I hate. I don’t understand the back straps at all, and they look awkward and uncomfortable. I also don’t get why we have two cutouts in the back instead of just an open back. It’s strange. But if I just look at the front, I’m happy.

I really don’t like this one. Utica did have a lot of good designs this year, but this one is not one of them. I will say that I like the waterfall crystals on the front, but that’s about all. I don’t like nude mesh to begin with, but the sleeves being half nude mesh and half solid blue makes it even worse. Also, I really don’t like the back. It feel like they looked at it, decided it needed something more, and then added a weird strap in the back that makes no sense. I’m usually not one to be mean rating leos, especially in DIII where I know they have a lot less to work with, but this just has almost no redeeming qualities for me.

I actually really like the concept of this, but the nude mesh is a no-go and there’s too much of it. It’s a shame because the open, strappy back is lovely and I enjoy the sparkle pattern. Why, nude, why?

Design 1.0/3, Fabric 0.5/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 1.5/3

This is my least favorite of Utica’s debut designs. I don’t like the nude mesh and the way it’s placed on the sleeves. The asymmetric back strap situation is also very odd, and I would’ve much preferred just the cutout back that’s underneath all the straps. However, I do really like the dripping sparkle design on the front, the incorporation of orange crystals, and the shade of navy they used, so it’s not all bad.

I LOVE this. I love tan on a leotard, especially in contrast with the dark blue. It is so simple, but the blue neck with the tan top and blue body is so elegant. The trickle-down rhinestones aren’t anything fancy but gives this leo exactly what it needs. Yes the back is questionable with the overlapping fabric, but I am willing to forgive it because the design is so unique, and I love how it snakes down. I just saw the sleeves that Mary Emma pointed out and wish I could unsee it, but I don’t care—I am still a supporter.

I like this a lot. The front is simple but really pretty with the sparkles dripping down, and the back is super interesting! I don’t recall seeing one like it, where the straps stretch all the way over the sides. I’m very here for Utica’s leo game so far, and I can’t wait for the designs we get in the future from this young program.

This isn’t my favorite stock design by any means, but I do like how the yellow really pops with it. This is a new look for Ithaca, which is a team that rarely wears more than one leo, let alone gets a new one. This is a solid addition for a team that will be wearing it for years to come.

I intensely dislike this stock design, and although Ithaca did a decent job with it, I still can’t get on board. I’m especially bothered by the fact that the front and back stripes don’t meet on the sides—it’s a bit sloppy.

The yellow is carrying this stock design, alongside the subtle shift in blue shades on the torso. Also, with how busy the top two-thirds of it is, I’m totally OK with the added school motifs being limited to the hip.

Naomi: 6.000

This is a great example of a stock design and team colors coming together to create a good leo! It’s not perfect, and the fact that the stripes don’t line up on the sleeve seams really annoys me, but it’s a solid overall look and a nice addition to Ithaca’s closet.

This isn’t my favorite stock design, but Ithaca did a pretty good job making it look decent. I am, however, really bothered by the fact that the lines don’t line up on the sides. Unfortunately, it’s all I can see and really takes away from the design as a whole.

This is one of my favorite stock designs, so it’s no surprise that I like this leo. I don’t care that it’s starting to get overused—I just love it! The geometric lines are nice, and it uses a variety of fabrics well. Extra points for putting the logo on the hip and having it look like it fits in with the design rather than out of place.

I don’t dislike this stock design, and I think they did a nice job with it. However, I absolutely hate that the lines don’t line up at the seams. It seems like a minor detail, but it really stands out for me. Overall, though, this is a solid look, but I actually prefer Ithaca’s other leotard more.

Mary: 6.500

Design 2/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.6/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

This is one of the better stock designs and is a pretty leo overall, but it’s nothing spectacular. It is nice to see Ithaca get another leo and get a break from the white one. The fabric is nice and high quality, and the design is strategically slimming, which gymnasts love. The only real critiques I have here are the IC logo being a little big and the yellow lines not lining up on the body and sleeves. Other than that, this is nice.

Note: Mary is a former Ithaca gymnast but never wore this leotard.

I know it’s a stock design, so I should give it more grace. But I feel like I’ve seen it too many times to be wowed by it. It’s a serviceable, decent design, though. The only thing I actively hate about it is the bar in the middle of the chest, as it doesn’t feel like it fits with the rest.

I hate when a team that rarely gets new leos chooses a stock design that another team that rarely gets new leos that’s also in its own conference already has (Gustavus). There are so many stock designs out there. Pick another! That being said, this is a fine rendition of it. I like the red accents and the otherwise all-black look.

This is an OK iteration of this design, but I can’t help but feel it could have been just a little more adventurous with the colors. The red details are nice, but I wish it popped more. Perhaps they used all the budget on rhinestones because it is bedazzled, which is a huge plus for me and bet looks incredible in motion.

I’m a bit annoyed at the result of this leotard. I’ve been playing around with this stock design on the GK website for years, and it has so much potential. It’s a shame to see it reduced to a monochromatic piece. On the plus side, a black leo is always elegant, and the red accents look lovely.

It’s a stock design, but it’s one of my favorite iterations of it. This design feels overused when it’s all done in mystique, and the black matte helps it stand out a tad more. All that being said, I’m a firm believer in a new design appearing only once in a conference; otherwise it looks like level 10 nationals.

Naomi: 5.400

This is a perfectly fine execution of this stock design. My main problem is that the red doesn’t pop nearly enough. But I like the sparkle placement and fabric choices here. It’s definitely an overused stock design, though.

I love a sparkly black leotard, and this is both of those things. Yes, it is a bit boring, and yes, Gustavus does already have this stock design, but that doesn’t change the fact that this is a pretty leotard. I love the subtle hints of red and the mesh sleeves.

Again, not my favorite stock design, but I do like how Utica has elevated it with the addition of the back straps. The ombre again is awesome—these colors just look good together, which is not something I normally say about orange and blue. I think it may be my least favorite of the Utica options, but it’s not actively bad either.

It’s a bit too “club leo” for me, but I don’t hate it. I’m a bit disappointed with the quality of the ombre blend; I think if this was better it would elevate it a little. The UU on the back is great, and I like the pattern of the rhinestones on the front. The straps on the back feel a little thrown in as an afterthought and don’t feel as athletic as the rest of the leo.

There’s a lot going on, and I’m a bit thrown off by how many shades of blue used to pull off the ombre in different areas. On the plus side, I’m a big fan of the back and how legible the stoning is on the navy.

Naomi: 5.600

This is OK, but doesn’t stand out from the pack for me. I like the ombre that’s sort of reminiscent of flames and the shades of blue and orange used. Back straps on a very small back opening are a big pet peeve of mine, and these just look like an afterthought. My favorite part of the leo is probably the white to blue ombre on the sides of the chest.

Of the leos Utica debuted this season, I think this is my third favorite. The ombre is the star of the show; it’s so close to being good, but it’s not quite hitting for me. The shapes near the armpit seem out of place and throw the design off. Points for Utica not being afraid to use orange, though!

I have mixed feelings on this one. On one hand, I love the boldness of the colors, the ombre sleeves, and the sparkly logo on the back. On the other hand, something just looks awkward about the design, and I HATE the unecessary orange straps on the back. I’d rank this in third place for the Utica designs.

I am going to call this the seaweed leo because I really cannot think of anything else when I see the squiggly design on the front. I hate the blue and orange ombre; it just doesn’t work for me. It also just looks so similar to other blue and orange leos! I don’t think I would have been able to tell the difference from afar. Again, the Utica leos have looked high quality, and that has been their biggest strength.

I’ll echo Elizabeth; it’s my least favorite of the Utica designs, but it’s still decent. Great uses of ombre and thick back straps. There’s something about the flames on either side of the chest that aren’t my favorite; I think with all the other patterns on the same part of the design, it looks a little too chaotic.

I’ve said it before, but I’m not a fan of lace, printed on or otherwise presented, so the belt and arms aren’t working for me. I do, however, love the shade of red used on the top here and just how much it pops. I almost wish this leo didn’t have a belt but instead left it at the “lace” arms or did a red to black or red to yellow ombre.

This one feels like someone was trying to decide between two leotards but couldn’t, so they just put two together. There just isn’t any cohesion between the elements. The lace on the arms is OK, but the different lace on the belt just doesn’t work for me. It’s a shame, too, as I love the shade of red and the “UC” on the chest. Plus, it has nice rhinestone placement, and I like the neck. An ombre blend or just a belt in the same lace as the arms would have made this much better.

I really dislike lace on leotards, so I don’t like the sleeves and find the belt particularly unfortunate here. I do like the shade of red on the chest and the matte black on the belly, though. The “UC” on the chest and the colors give this leo an athletic feel, so I the presence of lace feels even more out of place.

This feels like a beta concept for Maryland’s leotard closet, with the difference coming down to legibility. The two lace patterns aren’t iconic to Ursinus or Pennsylvania as a whole, so they end up making the design busy without adding substance.

Naomi: 4.900

Design 1/3, Fabric 0.4/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.9/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 1.3/3

I am a lace hater, and there is far too much lace here. Actually, there’s too much of everything. The colors are all over the place, the lace belt is really odd, and this leo is just maximalist in all the wrong ways. I like the idea of the chest section, and if that concept had been expanded to a whole leo, I would have liked it. But the lace belt, the black lace arms, and all the color blocking just throw it off for me.

There’s potential here, but it’s not my favorite. I’m not the biggest fan of lace fabric, and that’s still true here. Plus, the lace belt is weird. I do enjoy the sparkles surrounding the logo on the front, though.

I don’t think I’m as offended by the lace as most people. I don’t like it on the belt, but I actually think it’s a nice detail on the sleeves and adds something interesting to a design that’s largely devoid of sparkle. My biggest gripe with the lace is that the belt and sleeves don’t match; it just doesn’t make sense. I think an ombre body with no belt would’ve looked better. Also, I love this shade of red; it’s very striking.

Did they try to go for something unique and different? Yes. Can I get behind it? No. The body of the leo has such a retro throwback vibe that I love, similar to the white Florida F leo, but the sleeves and waistline are on their own journey. I am in the minority where I am normally a fan of lace on leos, but it just doesn’t work here. The belt reminds me of curtains or an antique rug. It’s a flattering design—and the belt does a good job providing a cinched waist that gymnasts love—but the fabric is a tad bit unforgiving and shows every muscle and bone in a gymnast’s body, which as a gymnast, I would not have loved.

Design 1.3/3, Fabric 0.5/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 1.3/3

I usually don’t mind lace that much—and the sleeves here are fine—but I’m really not a fan of the belt. The colors also don’t look great together. If it had been black like the sleeves, it would improve the design as a whole a lot, but it’s hard not to notice it with how thick it is. The “UC” is enough of a pop against the rest with the gold; that part isn’t the issue for me.
