LIVE BLOG: No. 81 Winona State at No. 84 Gustavus Adolphus

Tonight’s WIAC dual meet has everything a gym fan could ask for: in-state rivals, unique compositions, and a closely matched all-around battle. Host Gustavus Adolphus trails the visiting Winona State in rankings by average but has very similar event season highs thus far – which could prove to be a recipe for an “it ain’t over ‘til it’s over” meet this evening in Minnesota.

Keep an eye out for key contributors on both teams, as both the Warriors and the Gusties aim to break the 190 barrier for the first time this season. Winona State’s Jessica Miley has been a force this year, competing all around at each of her six meets so far. Teammate Taryn Sellner has made a name for herself on beam and floor, and is a top contributor on each midway through her senior year. Maddox Lee and Marley Michaud have emerged as a one-two punch for the Gusties’ all-around efforts, with their highest scoring potential coming in the final two rotations.

Rotation 1: Gustavus Adolphus VT, Winona State UB

Cash (GA): Y layout, a tad piked but gets good height! 9.275

Sampson (WSU): BIG shootover, and an even bigger toe on front tuck dismount!! 9.150

Bangs (GA): tsuk layout, again a tad piked but i give tons of credit for having her legs together in pre-flight 9.500

(WSU): almost over on the kip handstand, but recovers well. rushes the shootover and has a leg separation. Gorgeous double tuck! 8.275.

Lee (GA): Y lay, keeps it flared the whole time! 9.350

Stoltz (WSU): off on her Pak. goes through her low bar and high bar kip handstands again, and then shows a clean double tuck. 8.450.

Willis (GA): another Y lay, gets a big block and bounces out of the landing – that hop will be the only major deduction though. 9.500

Michaud (GA): sky high y lay! 9.375

Guy (GA): textbook Y lay at the back end of the lineup! huge block, great flare, only a step back. 9.475

Bateman (WSU): blind half to a huge piked Jaeger and overshoot. wasting no time with her giants into another stuck double tuck for the Warriors. 9.450.

Phillips (WSU): starts off with a blind half to Geinger, and comes off. shootover to get her momentum back, and then a nearly stuck double tuck. 8.125

Roth (WSU): Exh. blind half with a leg separation, but connected beautifully to a Jaeger and overshoot. The Warriors are putting on a double tuck clinic tonight! 9.125

Scoring will be added as it gets loaded into this meet’s spreadsheet.

After 1: Gustavus Adolphus 46.975, Winona State 44.525

Some end of rotation one shoutouts for each team are in order: the Gusties are having a big dance party on floor with their extra time at the end of the rotation, and the Warriors are cheering so loud that they’re helping me solve lineup mysteries through their Instagram Live.

Rotation 2: Winona State VT, Gustavus Adolphus UB

Michaud (GA): amazing lines, and glued legs in the blind full to double tuck! The stick crown is out and shiny as ever. 8.925

Peters (WSU): Y lay, small pike and a step back. great start to building back the Warriors’ momentum after bars 9.450

Guy (GA): hard to see handstands from this angle, but I did see another solid blind full to double tuck! 9.075

Knutson (WSU): Y tuck half, flexed feet in the air and a step forward. 9.475

Stoltz (WSU): fhs front tuck with a deep squat, but keeps it on her feet. 9.300

Horsch (GA): longer than usual wait time before she can start. starts with a muscled kip handstand, toe handstand, then shootover and back up to the high bar before I can even blink. Fight to stay on the high bar, but holds it and nails her dismount. Wild ride! 8.975

Kropiwiec (WSU): Y lay with flexed feet and a lunge back, but nothing major in the air to deduct. 9.400

Smaby (GA): clean handstands!! blind half to a big Jaeger, and overshoot again right to handstand. finishes it off with a blind full to double tuck, and unfortunately sits it. I can’t wait to see this with that final 0.5 added back into the final score! 9.000

Schmitz (GA): blind half to shootover, blind full to double tuck. This team has a formula and they’re sticking to it. 9.350

Lee (GA): comfortable toe handstand to Maloney, continues it with a shootover. dismounting with another toe handstand, into what i’m considering the Gusties-special-blind-full-double-tuck. 9.575.

After 2: Gustavus Adolphus 92.875, Winona State 91.850

Both teams had a strong second rotation! Winona State rallied hard on vault to build back from their start on bars, while the Gusties were able to keep the big breaks to a minimum.

Rotation 3: Gustavus Adolphus BB, Winona State FX

Breitkreutz (GA): yay back shoulder roll, bonus points in my eyes. easy through her full turn. CLEAN aerial bhs series, and big cheers from the team. split to split 3/4, and a stuck gainer front full off the end. 9.700

Knutson (WSU): opens with a roundoff 1.5 punch lay, and has a fun windmill! punch rudi with a lungey hop back out of it, and from our angle on the feed we’re treated to the high five train. 9.200

Dack (GA): making quick work of her mount sequence, and then borderline connects bhs swing through to aerial. falls off, and then off again on her split to split 3/4 connection. finishes with a bhs tucked 1.5, and takes a large step to the side. 7.925

Diskerud (WSU): BIG punch lay to a crunched rudi. recovers quickly and then my feed cut, back in time for the middle of her double tuck. 9.150

Cash (GA): bhs bhs loso, small check but stays on after her triple series. switch, switch, split without any issues, and then a unique one arm front walkover. closes it out with a stuck front tuck full! 9.575

McSweeney (WSU): joining partway through, floating through her punch lay punch full as a last pass. 9.500

Bangs (GA): long pause, bhs loso, then off the beam. checks again on her full turn, and another small one on her front toss. super unique pike jump to spit 3/4, and then drills her layout gainer full. 8.800

Stoltz (WSU): clean rudi pass to open and BIG leaps! recharging in the corner for a floaty roundoff 1.5 punch lay, and keeps it in bounds. 9.625!

Lee (GA): bhs loso, and then a rock solid leap series – couldn’t see what it was behind Winona’s floor crew. also sticks her roundoff 1.5 dismount! 9.775

Kropiwiec (WSU): short landing but stays up for her roundoff bhs 1.5 punch lay. having fun in the corner and then an EASY double tuck out of a deceptively small run. 9.550

Jahnke (GA): clean bhs loso series, and a very calm split to split 3/4 series. cat leap to front toss is blocked by Winona again, but her stick gainer pike off the end is in perfect view! 9.675

Sellner (WSU): cleanly through roundoff bhs 1.5 punch lay, and makes quick work of her switch and wolf 1.5. Winona State is putting on a show with their twisting jumps! finishes with a rudi to split jump, plenty of height but not the most parallel to the floor. 9.600

After 3: Gustavus Adolphus 140.400, Winona State 139.375

The gap is exactly the same size after three rotations, with the Warriors capitalizing on their strong event and the Gusties holding strong on beam.

Rotation 4: Winona State BB, Gustavus Adolphus FX

Lee (GA): great amplitude on her leaps, and gets her roundoff 1.5 punch lay around with only a small arch in the second salto. 9.600

Kelley (WSU): pullover mount! no nonsense on her full turn, and her bhs loso series. keeps the momentum with a switch and split 1/4! check on her side aerial, but rallies to stick her roundoff 1.5 dismount.

Michaud (GA): massive fhs rudi to back tuck, and just keeps it in bounds. shy of split on both leaps. second pass is a fhs front double twist! huge props from me for finishing with an E pass. 9.625

Aiken (WSU): no checks on her bhs loso, and carries it to her textbook switch to split jump. holds her side aerial to scale, but will take a check on it. small step forward on her gainer pike dismount to finish off her one event for the day. 9.350

Guy (GA): super clean punch front double twist, one small step out. great extension on her switch side, straddle half, and then throws in a cartwheel loso in her dance. closes off her day with a front layout punch front full with another step forward again. 9.575

Bateman (WSU): looking calm as ever, but off on her bhs loso series. WOW switch spit 1/4 jump! hitch kick to switch side, again super high. 8.900

Greeder (GA): caught a fhs front double twist out of the corner of my eye as Bateman was finishing her beam. switch to switch side shushunova! this meet is keeping me on my toes with the skills. closes out her day with a fhs front full front lay, and another twisting leap for good measure. 9.350

Binfet (GA): clean work in her roundoff bhs 1.5 punch lay, and gives the camera a face for good measure. out of frame for a good while in the corner, and then nails a roundoff double tuck before putting on her crown in the ending pose. 9.550

Stoltz (WSU): long wait during a conference before her. pauses before her series but it’s worth the wait – roundoff loso! great extension in her switch and switch half. closes out her day with a stuck roundoff 1.5 and a high five queue to work through. 9.700

Jahnke (GA): punch rudi to double stag, stays in bounds. BIG tour jete full, and drills her roundoff bhs 1.5 punch layout to stuck landing. leap series is out of the frame, but back in again for her back tuck 3/4. 9.625

Sellner (WSU): caught just the tail end – switch to a floaty straddle 1/4, and a nearly stuck front gainer full off the side. 9.725

Peters (WSU): exhibition – easily through her front toss to bhs series, and side aerial. switch to split jump like it’s on the floor – but then sits her roundoff 1.5 dismount.

FINAL: Gustavus Adolphus: 188.375, Winona State: 186.800

That closes out Gustavus Adolphus’ senior night with Winona State! Bars proved to be the be all and end all tonight, with the Gusties’ sizeable lead on the event proving insurmountable for the warriors. Both teams rallied hard in the second half of the meet, and demonstrated a wide variety of beam and floor skills.

During awards tonight, the Gusties are giving Winona State’s senior purple flowers to begin the senior night festivities. These teams will meet again in two weeks at the WIAC conference championship, remaining in state with the meet hosted by Hamline.
