There’s a lot that happens on the gymternet each week. So much so that it can be hard to keep track of it all. From training updates and COVID year announcements to recruiting rumors and coaching news, we don’t blame you for missing some important points here and there.

That’s where we come in. Last Week in College Gym is your one-stop shop for all the important headlines from the previous week in college gymnastics. No matter if you’re taking a social media break, went on vacation or just don’t have the capacity to follow every single gymnast, team and fan, we have you covered.

Top Storyline

Lily Smith Switches Commitment to Georgia

A day after Georgia confirmed former Alabama assistant coach Ryan Roberts had joined its coaching staff, five-star recruit Lily Smith announced she will also be joining the Gymdogs on a full athletic scholarship. Smith, one of the top-ranked gymnasts in the class of 2023, was previously committed to Alabama. 

Other Newsworthy Items

  • Arizona hired Dallas Becerra for it’s open assistant coaching position. Becerra previously served as assistant coach at Penn State and also made a coaching stop at Eastern Michigan.
  • Former Utah gymnast Hunter Dula was awarded the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Dula will be continuing her education at Duke.
  • Matthew DeGrandpre, former Springfield college gymnast and assistant coach, was named the new assistant coach for Texas Woman’s gymnastics. 
  • Four-star recruit Sydney Morris announced they have committed to LIU.
  • Newly appointed Alabama head coach Ashley Johnston announced assistant coach Gina Quinlan will remain on the coaching staff.

Training Updates

  • Rising Florida sophomore Riley McCusker shared a reel of numerous release moves on bars including a Ricna and a Nabieva. The former elite, who was limited only to bars in her freshman season (and beam exhibitions) due to an ankle injury she sustained at the 2021 GK Classic, teased a possible return to floor exercise with a Silivas into the pit. 
  • Rising Iowa junior Allison Zuhlke posted a video of a bhs + bhs + loso on beam to her Instagram story. 
  • A video of incoming freshman Brooklyn Rowray doing an aerial to layout stepout on a floor beam was posted to Minnesota’s Instagram story. 
  • Rising WVU sophomore Brynn Freehling posted a video of her training a side aerial to back handspring series on beam to Instagram. Freehling only competed floor for the Mountaineers in 2022.
