Washington is hosting its first-ever quad meet as a member of the Big Ten conference and has invited three formidable opponents to test first-year head coach Jessa Hansen Parker’s squad. Stanford joins Washington in navigating new territory, as it enters its first season as a member of the ACC.
Stanford enters the meet as the favorite after a stellar fifth-place finish at last year’s NCAA championships, marking its highest placement since 2015. Head coach Tabitha Yim’s roster is brimming with talent, including a host of level 10 standouts like Jamie Dugan and elite-caliber athletes, such as Ui Soma and Levi Jung-Ruiviar. With the departure of perfect 10-scorer Chloe Widner, particularly on beam and floor, today’s meet will offer a glimpse at how the Cardinal is adjusting and building on its breakout 2024 season.
UC Davis and Boise State both arrive fresh off winning their respective conference championships in 2024. UC Davis made history last season by breaking the 197.000 barrier for the first time just two meets before the MPSF championship. Boise State, while missing 2023 NCAA vault runner-up Courtney Blackson, will lean heavily on 2024 Mountain West Gymnast of the Year Emily Lopez. Lopez, a three-event specialist, boasts career-highs of at least 9.925 on all her events, including a perfect 10 on bars. Her fifth year could be crucial for the Broncos in this competitive field.
Rotation 1: Washington VT, Stanford UB, Boise State BB, UC Davis FX
McWilliams (WASH): Leads off with a Yurchenko full and takes a big hop backward and step too. Solid distance, but not the biggest block off of the table. 9.600.
Bolden (WASH): Announcer said she has a scary warm up and has her knee taped up. Comes back with a nice Yurchenko full with a big hop backward and another step to follow. 9.475.
Dugan (STAN): Toe on + Maloney + Bail, solid handstand. Big double layout dismount with just a hop back. Solid NCAA debut! 9.625.
Innes (WASH): Yurchenko full and blocks with her arms at the end of the table. Big hop back. 9.700.
Lopez (BSU): Starts off with her BHS + LOSO series and its perfect. Really great full turn to follow. Split 1/4 from the side + straddle half, nicely done. Balance check on a beat jump + front toss. Gainer full off the side and sticks the landing. 9.850.
Sorento (STAN): Toe on + Maloney + Pak, nicely done. Dismounts with a double layout and sticks it! Nicely done. 9.775.
Wyly (UCD): Starts with a nicely done double tuck! Great chest position on that. Switch ring + tour jete half and loses control on that leap pass. Front tuck through to double pike and lands with chest down and takes a step forward. 9.375.
Neault (STAN): Starts with a Maloney + Pak, lovely position on the high to low transition. Giant full + double tuck and gets the stick! 9.750.
Roberts (STAN): Starts off with a vertical handstand and follows it with a Pak. Maloney half to get back up to the high bar and has a slight foot separation. Double layout dismount and the position is beautiful in the air but takes a small hop back. 9.825.
Marshall (UCD): Big double tuck to mount, gets her feet slightly in front of her on the landing and takes a big step back. Switch half + wolf full and gets those around. Front layout + front full and gets nice height on those saltos. Double pike to dismount and her chest is wayyy down and takes a step forward.
Nakayama (BSU): Didn’t catch the full routine, but ends the Broncos’ rotation with a fall.
Moneymaker (UCD): Mounts with a Rudi + LOSO, a little off but makes it work. Switch half + wolf full and that was solid. Front tuck through to double tuck and takes a controlled step back.
After 1: Boise State 48.900, Stanford 48.775, Washington 48.475, UC Davis 48.350
Seems like a combination of the new judging system and first meet jitters are getting the best of these teams with no school scoring above a 49.000. None of the teams counted falls, either.
Boise State leads after a solid beam rotation but did end with a fall.
Rotation 2: UC Davis VT, Washington UB, Stanford BB, Boise State FX
Wyly (UCD): Goes for a Yurchenko tucked full, nicely done but will miss out on the 10.0 start value.
Ngyuen (STAN): LOSO + LOSO and is way off and falls off. Comes back with a cat leap + switch side and it’s back on track. Staddle jump + beat jump. Wobble on the full turn. RO + double twist dismount and takes a hop back.
Moneymaker (UCD): Yurchenko full and swings her arms around her to get that twist around. Takes a big hop back.
Pujlos (UCD): Yurchenko full on, pike off and barely gets it around. Takes a step back on the landing, but it was definitely better than what I saw in the warmup.
Landry (STAN): Starts off a double wolf turn and it’s nicely controlled. BHS + LOSO and its perfect. Nice position on her split ring jump. Shows off her flexibility with a needle. Gainer pike off the end and sticks the landing.
Abraham (UCD): Back in the lineup and sticks her Yurchenko 1.5 cold!!!! That was awesome!
McDonough (WASH): Starts off with straddled jaegar + shootover, nicely done. Giant full + double tuck and moves her feet on the landing. A little off on the giant full but makes the dismount around nicely.
Roberts (STAN): Starts with a wolf turn 1.5 – looks like she might have wanted to do a double, but hesistated. Nice switch leap + split jump. Fall off the beam on her BHS + LOSO. Stanford will count a fall. Side aerial + split jump, slight hesitation connecting those skills. Gainer full off the side and takes a step on the landing.
Robinson (STAN): BHS + LOSO and has a balance check. Switch leap + split jump and its nicely done. Side aerial + beat jump. Follows up that connection with an effortless full turn. RO + back 1.5 and sticks the landing.
Soma (STAN): Exhibition routine here. Slight wobble on a full turn but nothing major. Switch leap + split jump and that was great. Slight wobble on a side aerial, and follows it up with a nice BHS + LOSO. Switch leap + beat jump and has a slow connection. Gainer pike off the end and sticks the landing.
Pascal (BSU): Double tuck to start and bounces forward on the landing with a low chest position. Back 1.5 + front layout and takes a controlled step forward.
Loyim (BSU): First pass is a difficult whip + double tuck, chest a bit down and takes a step forward. Switch straddle + Popa + Popa, didn’t get that first Popa fully around, so there is some precision deductions there. Double pike dismount and takes a controlled step back.
After 2: Boise State 97.850, Stanford 97.550, Washington 97.125, UC Davis 96.775
Boise State holds onto the lead by three tenths after the second rotation led by Emma Loyim’s team-leading 9.875. Stanford counted a fall, but still managed a respectable 48.775 with Claire Dean’s leadoff 9.900. UC Davis and Washington had solid rotations of their own with each squad not having any falls.
Rotation 3: Boise State VT, UC Davis UB, Washington BB, Stanford FX
Kho (BSU): Solid Yurchenko full and takes just a small hop forward.
McGovern (BSU): Another Yurchenko and sticks the landing! Not the biggest block off the table but keeps a nice shape in the air.
Wakita (UCD): Starts with a straddled jaegar, nicely done. Goes really high on the Pak but catches quite close, but keeps the routine going. Double layout dismount and takes a big step forward.
Oppegard (WASH): Starts with BHS + LOSO and falls off immediately. Short of 180 degrees on the switch half. Solid side aerial to get the routine back on track. Sticks the gainer full of the side.
Ohsirio (UCD): Major errors in this routine. Falls on the Tkatchev, and nearly goes over on the giant full before trying to connect her dismount. She does two extra isolated half pirouettes before chucking the double tuck but sticks that.
Vulaj (BSU): Yurchenko full on, pike off and just a small hop back! Nice chest poisitoon too.
Robinson (STAN): Solid double tuck to start. Goes for a Memmel turn but doesn’t quite make it around. Back 1.5 + front half + straddle jump, nice difficulty! Double pike dismount and takes a controlled step back.
Lopez (BSU): Goes for a super clean Yurchenko full with a nice block. Takes just a hop back.
Gideon (UCD): Piked jaegar to overshoot but hits her feet on the floor. Beautiful double layout dismount but takes a slight hop backward.
Neault (STAN): Mounts with a clean double pike with a controlled step back. Switch leap + ring leap full, not perfect but it’s solid. Second pass is a Rudi and takes a step back. Dismounts with a back 1.5 + front layout, not the most amplitude on that second salto but it is nicely done nonetheless.
Navarro (WASH): BHS + BHS + LOSO, slight adjustment but its still clean. Beat jump + switch straddle which is nicely done. RO + back 1.5 dismount and takes a small hop forward.
McDonough (WASH): Falls on her BHS + LOSO, and has another fall on the side aerial. The Huskies will have to count a fall earlier in the lineup, but this should be the dropped score with the two falls. Double full dismount and a solid landing.
Roberts (STAN): Starts off with a front tuck through to double tuck and the height was huge! Nicely controlled landing as well. Switch half + Popa, great positions on those leaps. Front layout + Rudi and that was clean. Gorgeous technique.
Carter (STAN): Exhibition here. Huge Rudi + straddle jump and lost control on that jump, bending her knees. Back 1.5 + front layout and demonstrates nice control on the landing.
After 3: Stanford 146.850, Boise State 146.400, Washington 145.825, UC Davis 144.800
Stanford just posted the second highest floor total in the country this season with a 49.300 – two tenths behind LSU’s 49.500 from week one. Anna Robert’s 9.925 led the Cardinals to the first 49+ event score of the night and it was well deserved.
Without two falls, Washington would have been on pace for a 49+ tally but still posted a respectable 48.700 on the event. UC Davis also had two falls and notched a 48.025 on bars, while Boise State recorded a 48.550 without counting any falls on vault.
Rotation 4: Stanford VT, Boise State UB, UC Davis BB, Washington FX
Chang (STAN): Nice shape in a Yurchenko full, but slightly short on rotation and takes a hop forward.
Scafani (UCD): BHS + BHS + LOSO and fights for that! Big wobble but refused to come off the beam. Slight balance check on the full turn. Gainer full off the side and sticks the landing. Good fight to stay on.
Walker (STAN): Really nice Yurchenko full! Sticks her arms out to try and stick that landing but takes a small hop.
McDonough (WASH): Rudi + LOSO, throws her chest forward on that first flip but makes the pass around without a problem. Some flexed feet on that leap pass. Double pike dismount and takes a controlled step back.
Neault (STAN): Yurchenko full on, pike off and nearly sticks the landing but takes a small step. One of the best versions of the vault I’ve seen tonight.
Ball (BSU): Toe on + Maloney + Pak, nicely done. Cast to handstand on the low bar – looks like she bailed on the half pirouette. Get it the second time. Solid landing on the dismount.
Oppegard (WASH): Rudi + straddle jump and again throws her chest forward on that salto. Back 1.5 + front layout and is short on rotation and takes a small hop back. Switch ring half, not sure if that should get credit.
Guiterrez (STAN): Yurchenko 1.5 with just a hop forward, that was great!
Shchennikova (BSU): Straddled jaegar to start and its clean. Follow with Pak and a half pirouette on the low bar. Hits that final cast to handstand, and then dismounts with giant full + double tuck. Just a small hop back.
Roberts (STAN): Reigning NCAA vault champion goes for a Yurchenko 1.5 with a big hop forward. It was clean, though.
Ray (UCD): Very difficult side aerial + LOSO! Has just a slight foot adjustment. Slight balance check on a full turn. Front tuck full of the end of the beam and sticks the landing.
Lopez (BSU): Catches a tiny bit close on the piked jaegar, but has no problems keeping the rhytym going. Nice handstand on the Bail and dismounts with a stuck double layout.
Moneymaker (UCD): Begins with a solid front toss + BHS, nice connection. Full turn + beat jump connection. Gorgeous shape on that the double stag jump. Sticks her dismount as well.
Oshiro (UCD): Very solid on the BHS + LOSO and follow up with a nice full turn. Gainer LOSO and that was great! Dismounts with gainer full off the side and has a slight adjustment.
McDonough (WASH): Rudi + LOSO – and again the chest is thrown forward and kills the height on the salto. Goes for an E rated front double full for the second pass and sits it down.
Innes (WASH): Front double full + front pike and that was very well done. Tour jete half + Popa, want to see a bit more extension on those leaps. Back 1.5 + front layout and that was floaty. Rudi + straight jump to dismount and that was good. Best floor routine of the night for the Huskies.
FINAL: Stanford 195.600, Boise State 195.050, Washington 194.800, UC Davis 193.425
Stanford grabbed the lead from Boise State after the second rotation and held on to it to win, led by Anna Roberts’ pair of 9.900 or higher marks. The Cardinals counted a fall on beam and couldn’t find the landings on vault, but overall I am impressed with how this squad looks. It seems like Yim is pushing for six 10.0 start value vaults in her lineup and I would not be surprised if that is the case by the end of the season.
After Washington and Boise State finished the 2024 ranked No. 28 and No. 29, respectively, the Broncos proved to be the stronger team today by finishing behind Stanford by 0.550. UC Davis’ Keanna Abahram returned to lineups after missing out last week and stuck her Yurchenko 1.5 cold. Despite her return, the Aggies took a one tenth dip from last week but stayed relatively consistent throughout.
VT: Anna Roberts (Stanford) 9.900
UB: Emily Lopez (UC Davis) 9.850
BB: Claire Dean (Stanford) 9.900
FX: Anna Roberts (Stanford), Emily Innes (Washington) 9.925
AA: Brenna Neault (Stanford) 39.100
