NCGA Ursinus

LIVE BLOG: NCGA Nationals

This weekend is what DIII gymnastics fans have been waiting for! After a new qualification procedure, the teams competing at nationals are Brockport, Oshkosh, La Crosse, Whitewater, Stout, and Cortland. Both regional championships had some sort of an upset with Oshkosh and Whitewater receiving the automatic qualifying spots for the West scoring a 192.875 and a 192.275, respectively, and Brockport and Cortland receiving the qualifying spots for the East with scores of 192.100 and 191.650. The next two teams to qualify by SAS score were Lacrosse and Stout, resulting in a West-heavy national championship.

For the second year in a row Rhode Island missed out on nationals as a team by a tenth or less and would have qualified this year if the qualification procedures from last year had stayed in place. Ithaca, which has been the No. 2 seed in the East all season long, will also miss out on nationals as a team after finishing in fourth place at regionals. Despite not going as a team, it will be sending the most individuals from any team, and multiple athletes could contend for All-American status and even national titles.

Based on the regional results alone and ignoring potential scoring disparity, Oshkosh, Whitewater, and La Crosse would take the podium with Brockport in fourth. Regionals was a tough meet for the Golden Eagles, not counting a single score above 9.500 on beam after scoring an astounding 49.025 the weekend before at Utica. The Golden Eagles have the potential to take this title if they can hit, but that is a big IF. Historically, Brockport has struggled to put it together on the day of nationals. Oshkosh still put together a great competition at regionals, despite counting a fall on beam. Oshkosh can be huge on every single event and it will be fascinating to watch this competition unfold with the East and the West all in the same place with the same judging panel. Although college gymnastics is about who hit on the day, from how the season has gone this competition is a fight between Brockport and Oshkosh with Lacrosse right on their heels.

For more information on individuals and team competition, check out the NCGA nationals preview.

Rotation 1: Brockport Vault UWL Bars UWW Beam Stout Floor UWO and Cortland BYE

Blogging with no lineups today, so will just be stating the team unless I am able to identify from the skill set/routine.

Awesome intro video with clips from previous national championships set a Kanye West song.

Swick out with double leg injury from warmup day. Rumored Achilles tears. Such a shame and will be a blow to the Golden Eagles. She was also on my list for possible bar champions.

Will be trying to watch between 3 streams so will be mainly focusing on the bar and vault stream as of right now. I have Allison keeping an eye on floor and vault for me. Wish they would turn the bars stream a tiny bit so I could see beam in the background.

UWL coach wearing a strapless black jumpsuit, UM QUEEN.

Uwl: blind to gienger with legs glued to shootover. End with a solid blind full to double back with just a step. I don’t think her legs came apart the entire routine. That could anchor most team’s lineups.

UWW- Balance check on the beam series, big step front and to the side on the 1.5 dismount

Stout- solid, didn’t totally get that rudi around in her last pass but finessed it

UWL: blind to straddled jeager and is way far out and misses. Doesn’t even touch. Was pretty in the air though. Finishes to a stunning bail. Blind full with legs glued to a double tuck. Ugh what a shame that would’ve been so pretty.

Brockport: Paultre with a Yurchenko Arabian with a big step forward. Leg slides but lots of power. Good start.

Swick in wheelchair on sidelines.

La crosse – clean loso series. Jump series no issue, nice extension. Side aerial. A little shy on her leap series but solid. Step forward on the dismount

Stout – wolf turn, some form. Double pike chest down but a controlled lunge to finish. Switch side to popa good. Looked like a 1.5 to front half to split for last pass, love that.

UWW: stunning layout step out on beam. Back handspring 1.5 to finish.

Brockport: Big tuck full from Kay with the chest down. Good start to her AA program.

UWL: Great handstand to toe hand to Maloney to a nice bail handstand to a toe shoot with tremendous hip rise and turn over. Stuck double lay. Yes ma’am.

Brockport: Decent layout with some flexed feet and a step back. Good chest position.

UWW- off center on the loso series but takes a step back to correct it and keep it on. Beautiful extension in her leaps. Front tuck, small step forward. Check on the leap series. Small steps forward on the dismount. SO many big hugs all around. Someone is cutting onions.

Stout – steps out on the whip double pike first pass, plenty of power there. Fhs rudi to straddle jump, soft knees in the jump.

UWL: Blind full to a good tkckatev later. A little short on the bail hand. Ends with a nice blind full to double tuck. Way to get back on track.

Brockport: the most humongous tuck full I’ve ever seen in my life. So much distance and height. Chest a bit down but holds her stick. Great.

UWW – shoulder check on the loso series. Switch to switch side, beautiful. Wobble on the cartwheel. Gainer loso, small check. Straddle half was gorg. Gainer full off side, step.

Stout – front lay to rudi to stag. A little wild on that stag rebound but good form otherwise. Gorg straddle extension in those leaps. Awkward rebound forward on her double tuck pass but keeps it on her feet

Uwl: Blind to nice piked jeager. Bail with a small arch. Finishes with a blind full to double tuck.

Brockport: Big layout full with great body position. Just a hop. Looks like Sargent? Looking for a value placement.

UWL: BIG tckatev. Down to the low bar with a bail hand. another stuck DLO for lacrosse.

Brockport: flaired out Yurchenko full from Eramo. Tiniest little hop. Oh wow. We could’ve just watched our national champion vault.

UWW- front kick over to Bhs, smooth. Cat leap to side somi, excellent. Gainer pike off end.

Stout – good double pike to open. Honestly I love the back tuck to belly choreo bounce. I can’t explain it. 1.5 to archy front lay.

Tucker (RIC): Great tucked full with good chest position.

Gates (RIC) Yurchenko pike. Maybe meant to do a layout? Low SV puts her at a disadvantage for the AA title.

WSU: individual on bars. Saw her warmup and knew I had to watch her compete. Liked jeager to a bail. Little bit of legs. Blind full is super low and ends with a double tuck out of a giant.

Keyes (RIC): vault. Tsuk layout. Little pikey, but just a step.

Castallanetta (UT): floor. Big double pike with tiny foot adjustment in her step. Great leaps. Front full front lay with a hop. Would’ve loved to see her step instead. Double tuck with a controlled step. Great routine, but we will have to see what the score shows.

beam and floor descriptions thanks to Allison.

After 1: Stout V UWO UB UWL Cortland FX

Rotation 2:

Stout: tuck full with chest way down on landing.

Uwo: half pirouette to tckatev and catches a little close. Bail handstand. Full out to end. Dynamic dismount.

Stout: handspring pike and almost sits but saves it.

Halcom (UWL): BHS loso, bends her knees on that lending a bit extra but keeps it on. Front aerial, beat. Little shy on that second split in her jump series. Front full, stuck.

Cortland: Just missed that opening pass, but she finished with her chest up, twisting was fast. 1.5 to front lay, lay goes straight down and she lands low but doesn’t sit. Switch side to popa.

Uwo: ooh a delchev! Nice catch. Floaty pak. Quick blind full, a little low, to double tuck. Just a hop.

Stout: Layout full to almost a stick but lifts her leg up. Pretty pikey. Not one of the biggest vaults we’ve seen today.

Stout: another layout full and pikes it down with a hop forward. Love the difficulty, but not the execution we need to see.

Christenson (UWL): Small bobble on that full turn. Beautiful loso series. Switch switch, good. Yeahhh moonwalk! RO 1.5 lay, small hop forward.

Stout vault coach is having a dance party. King.

UWO: drops her gienger. Ends with a nice bail and finishes with a blind full to double tuck and steps back. Will want to drop. Pressures on.

Stout: Another layout full. This one a liked. Nice pop and chest up on landing.

Stout: layout half and bends the knees to make it around and takes three steps off the mat. Low landing.

Cortland: Front lay rudi, lands chest a little down but gets it all the way around and doesn’t move her feet. RO lay side pass. Front lay front full, doesn’t move. Her hollow body position is the stuff dreams are made of.

Matulka (UWL): Bhs bhs loso, takes it right to the edge. No issues. Beautiful form on her leaps, her toe point emphasizes it. Tiniest check wobble on that full turn but smooths it over. RO 1.5 lay, some foot sep, small hop forward.

Buffington (UWO) : Nive blind to a jeager and catches close but keeps her bail together with good form. Handstand right on top of the bar and stick her double arabian. How does she keep sticking every. Single. Time. 9.8 that could do it.

Castalleanta: Big full but a big step and over the lines. I think I liked Eramo’s better.

Cortland: rudi stag, good height and controlled on that stag. RO tuck side pass. Honestly I don’t mind these. Front full front lay, plenty of power there, just a tad bit archy. Doesn’t quite get to 180 in that leap series.

Zepeda (UWL): Bhs loso, no issues there. Switch split 3/4, not quite 180 but just shy. Ahh, comes off on her side aerial. Gainer full off side, looked stuck.

UWO: Nice straddled jeager. Bail right on top of the bar. Hops forward on her ftdt to finish. Great rotation for UWO.

Cortland: Front lay to rudi, chest a bit low on that landing but clean in the air. Step forward on that second pass but keeps it in fine.

Robbins (UWL): Drops her shoulder after the loso but no issue. Front toss wiggle to beat jump. RO 1.5, stuck!

UWO: another hit. Clear hip to tckatev. Ends with a big double lay.

Cortland: Double pike to open, good. Bit shy on that 180 in her leaps but the form is spot on otherwise. RO 1.5 front tuck, okay. She started to go a little sideways on that 1.5 landing so the front tuck was wonky but she gets it to her feet.

Cortland: Whip to 1.5 to front tuck, lovely. Some flexed feet on the leap series but good height. Rudi to stag.
Stoltz (WSU): Small check on that full turn. RO to LOSO, no problem. Switch leap series, lovely. 1.5 lay dismount, stuck.

Murray (IC): Perfect front full front lay. Jumps all the way around. Double pike to almost a stick. But steps forward into her dance. Looks very excited.

Freyman (IC): front double full to front tuck and steps backwards on her landing. Good ring position. Rudi and lands a bit chest down with a step back.

Goodwin (Ithaca): Totally off on her front tuck beam mount and comes off. Ahhh man. Full turn with a small check. BHS, comes off. BHS loso, comes off. Split, split 3/4, good. Piked gainer off end, small hop.

Oshkosh: BHS loso, good. Switch leap split jump, gorg extension. Full off side, good!

Oshkosh: Hits her loso series, no problem. Switch leap split jump. Wobble on the front toss beat. RO 1.5 lay, step back.

Kay (Brockport): misses her tucked jeager. gets back up and misses her hand on her swing bail. Over on the handstand on high bar. Off the all around podium. Brockport needs to drop

Cortland: Another tucked tusk full. Chest more up with a step back.

Oshkosh: Great extension in her leap series. BHs loso. Check on the full turn. Gainer full off side, stuck.

Whitewater: 1.5 to front lay, good. Excellent straddle in her leap series. Double pike, chest a little down.

Cortland: Layout full with some legs and a step back. Chest a little forward, but nothing crazy.

Brockport: Blind to jeager and catches really close. Nice bail handstand. Ends with a blind full to double tuck with a hop forward.

Cortland: Another layout full with the chest down and a step back.

Steed (IC): Yurhcenko layout half with a big hop forward and a step off the mat. Huge height and distance though.

Oshkosh: Front toss to split, good. Switch to split. Front aerial to bhs, wonky, leg comes up, fights, but comes off. Awkward 1.5, but keeps it on her feet.
Whitewater: Double pike to open, good chest position. FHS front full front pike. Little shy of the 180 in her leap series. Double tuck.

Sargent: Beautiful blind to jeager and catches finger tips. Picture perfect bail handstand. Sticks her double lay and is SO excited. Great routine. 9.75. I think that puts her behind Buffington.

Murray (IC): went for the stick and sits down her handspring front pike.

Brockport: Change, Change to jeager. Clear hip to a bail to a nice toe up to the high bar. Blind full to a double tuck with a small hop.

Babineaux (IC): Tsuk arabian with a nice chest up landing, but shuffle backwards a bit.

Oshkosh: Side aerial to round off, connection looked good there. Good extension through her toes in her leap. Switch leap to split jump, smooth. 1.5 off end, stuck.

Whitewater: Double full to open, gets that around nice and fast. Leaps looked good. Front pass has a floaty front lay. Takes it right to the corner but keeps it in

Oshkosh: BHS loso. Cat leap front toss split jump, love it. Beautiful leap series. Good routine.

Brockport. Bushey I think. Nice gienger to a shootover with good legs. Ends with a giant full to double tuck with just a hop. Eagles avading a fall on bars.

Whitewater: Double tuck, chest slightly low. Great amplitude on the leaps, good position in her wolf jumps. RO 1.5 front lay, great lay position. FHS rudi.
Le Blanc (Springfield): BHS loso, leg comes up but she keeps it on. Switch series to beat, keeps it moving. Tiny check on the full turn. Love the front roll. Gainer full off side, looked stuck!

McGuiness (Springfield): BHS but comes off on the lay. Gainer full off side, doesn’t move her feet.

Brockport: In for sick. Higgins to jeager. I love. Bail with a little body position. Blind to front giant, to half pirouette and fiiiiights to keep it in the right spot to a toe front stuck cold. Put in at the last second and boy, did she deliver. Eagles are on it today.

Whitewater: Floaty front lay in that opening pass. Beautiful extension in those leaps. Biiiiiig double tuck.

Toth (Eau Claire): Fhs front full front lay but things got a little wonky and didn’t quite have the bounce for it. FHS rudi split jump. Good height in her leaps.

Gates (RIC): Blind half to a nice bail to a toe up where she catches close but keeps it going to end with a blind full double tuck with a big step forward and chest down.

O’Connell (Eau Claire): FHS front full, some leg sep in the air. Solid routine overall.

Keyes (RIC): half pirouette to a bail. Doesn’t quite get the handstand but connects to a toe shoot up to high bar. Ends with a blind full to double tuck with just a step.
