Top States for Gymnastics Recruits

You may have read last week’s article 2023 Recruit Ratings By the Numbers, but that was just a quick overview of some of the stats related to this year’s ratings. Of particular interest to gymnastics fans is the distribution of top recruits among states or regions of the country. To dive into this further, we created an interactive map to break down the number of three-, four-, and five-star recruits by state and Canadian province.

The map below shows the total number of recruits who currently train in each state or province, and the breakdown by stars can be viewed by hovering over each location. Texas’ dominance in developmental gymnastics unsurprisingly stands out in this visualization, but a less expected outcome is Ontario being the fourth highest state/province by number of rated recruits. Canadian participation in NCAA gymnastics has been on the rise for several years, and that trend looks like it will continue.

  1. It is still insane to me that despite the popularity of gymnastics both developmental and also elite in Texas and the various world class gyms in Texas that there is no NCAA D1 team at all in Texas.
You would think at least one of Baylor, Texas, Texas A&M, or University of Houston would have started a program by now. Maybe not Houston as it is in the AAC, but now Texas will be in the SEC along with A&M and Baylor has had a long successful acro and tumbling team that we will see one of these schools started a gymnastics team in the future.

My best bet would be Texas, especially since the SEC is a powerhouse gymnastics conference.

Still mind boggling that Texas Womans is the only university but it is D2.

So many potential recruits within state and I am sure various TX gymnasts would love to be close to home and would commit to a Texas school.
