BREAKING: Texas State Confirms New Gymnastics Program for 2028 Season

Texas State University announced Monday that it is adding a women’s gymnastics program, aiming for a competitive debut in the 2028 season. This follows previous reporting last year that a program was in the works.

Given the previous lack of a Division I program in Texas and the immense popularity of gymnastics in the state, this is an exciting announcement for the national gymnastics community. “Texas has long been the nation’s greatest producer of elite gymnasts, yet until now, those athletes had to leave home to compete at the NCAA Division I level,” said university President Kelly Damphousse. “[Texas State] is proud to change that. This program represents opportunity, ambition, and a new level of national prominence for our university, our student-athletes, and our state.”

The university also announced that Olympic gold medalists Jordyn Wieber and Carly Patterson will play a heavy role in the development of the new program. Wieber recently stepped down from the head coaching position at Arkansas after seven years at the helm, while Patterson is a Texas native.

Texas State will join Boise State, Oregon State, Southern Utah, and Utah State in the Pac-12 when it begins competing. The athletic department is beginning its search for a head coach immediately.

This is a developing story. More details will be added as they emerge.
