The Dismount: Week 7

In the last week before the switch to NQS rankings, teams showed out, with more program records, perfect 10s and standout performances. With just three more weeks until conference championships, it’s crunch time for teams to drop bad scores. But before we get into all that, look back on week seven with recaps, results, superlatives and more below.

Best Sideline Dance Crew

Destiny Watley, Sacramento State

You can always count on the Hornets to liven up a meet, and senior Destiny Watley’s floor routine brought fans and her teammates in on the action.

Best 1-2 Punch

Alana Laster and Angelica Labat

Illinois State had itself quite the weekend with a record-setting vault rotation on Friday and another phenomenal performance on Sunday, capped off by these back-to-back stuck one and a halves from Alana Laster and Angelica Labat.

The Worst

FloGymnastics

Flo’s coverage of Big Fives failed to meet even our incredibly low expectations. From a chronically frozen feed to disappearing quad boxes, the only thing Flo’s broadcast elevated was our blood pressure. Nevermind Natalie Brown commentating to no one for a full four rotations on Saturday before Flo remembered to turn on the Flozone stream. This meet deserves much, much better.

Also The Worst

Metroplex Challenge

If you’re going to schedule a fantastic quad-meet between four schools that everybody wants to watch, please provide live scores and video for your audience! Meets featuring top ranked teams that prohibit most of the public from watching, or even following along, are not only frustrating, but inhibit the growth of the sport!

Most Fitting Tribute

Lucien Gunter

The extended LSU family donned their most festive purple and gold attire in honor of alumna Olivia Gunter’s late father, well-known to LSU gymnastics fans for his eye-catching outfits.

Most Commitment to Choreography

Sidney Washington, Floor

Pitt’s Sidney Washington has kicking choreography in her floor routine. Her teammate in the corner pretended to fall over as she kicked.

  1. No. The worst was the quad meet coverage of Stanford’s meet on Monday. They consciously chose to never show Boise State, Sacramento State, and BYU. Boise State dominated the meet, but could not see any of it. SMH.
