Elise Ray-Statz Resigns as Washington Head Coach

The University of Washington announced on Wednesday that Head Coach Elise Ray-Statz had resigned after leading the program for four years. She plans to move away from Seattle to live closer to family.

In her tenure as head coach, Ray-Statz’s team finished within the top 20 nationally each year and achieved several landmark results including two trips to the NCAA Championships, the best year-end ranking in program history (eighth in 2018) and the best in-conference season record in program history (5-1-1 in 2020). Prior to taking the head coach position, Ray-Statz was an assistant coach at Washington for four years.

Assistant coach Ralph Rosso has been named interim head coach for the 2021 season. Rosso has experience with this unusual position, having lead Arizona State in 2016 on an interim basis during former head coach Rene Lyst’s tumultuous final season.
