LIVE BLOG: Big Ten Championship Session Two

While the Big Ten title will likely be decided in the third session, there is still plenty at stake for the teams competing earlier in the day. First, all of these teams are preparing for regionals in a couple of weeks and remain in the hunt for seeding. Maryland is currently ranked No. 27; while finishing in the top 28 does not guarantee a bye to the second round, it certainly improves the outlook. A score above 194.750 would keep Maryland at No. 28 or higher. Ohio State, Iowa, and Penn State are also in contention for a seeded position. Iowa could finish as high as No. 16 (though that is unlikely), Ohio State as high as No. 15, and Penn State as high as No. 14. Each will aim to post the strongest score possible, especially with several conference meets being decided later in the day.

While regional positioning will likely be the top priority for teams in this session, individual titles are also on the line. Although most are expected to be decided in the evening session, there are still several contenders to watch here. In the all-around, Tory Vetter and Aurรฉlie Tran could factor, with Tran also a standout on bars. Ava Piedrahita has a vault capable of challenging for the title when she sticks it. Beam, as always, can be unpredictable, but Dani Latronica has the potential to be in the mix. On floor, JJ Colemanโ€”fresh off a recent 10.0โ€”will be among the favorites.

The meet will be streamed on BTN, and scores can be found on Statbroadcast.

Iowa could not have asked for anything more in that rotation as the Hakeyes put up a season high rotation on beam. Ohio State will also be thrilled with that floor rotation. Penn State and Maryland would have hoped for more that rotation. That is the lowest rotation score on vault the Nittany Lions have posted in over a moth so the seeded spot seems to be slipping away. Coleman is now tied for the current floor lead, and the Tran and Turner duo for Iowa now lead on beam.

AFTER THREE: Iowa 147.475, Ohio State 147.350, Penn State 146.875, Maryland 146.475

After a relatively clean first two rotations, the third rotation brought a little mess with three of the four teams having a fall in that rotation. Luckily, none of the teams had to count the fall as other hit routines in the rotation allowed the fall score to be dropped. Iowa continues to lead with one rotation to go and will be looking to post the score to beat heading into the evening session. The all around leader heading into the evening session will likely also come from this session depending on how this last rotation goes.

Iowa will be in the lead heading into the final session tonight. Rutgers score from last night does hold up putting Rutgers in third. As for regionals, Maryland should be out of the play in round, but Ohio State was not able to move into a seeded position after coming up slightly short of the score it needed on beam.
