LIVE BLOG: No. 9 Michigan at No. 6 UCLA

A top-10 Valentine’s Day showdown awaits in Pauley Pavilion as No. 9 Michigan travels west to face No. 6 UCLA in week seven.

Michigan enters the meet fresh off a narrow win over Ohio State, posting its third 197-plus score of the season. While the Wolverines have been steady in overall team totals, their event-to-event performances have fluctuated, with different strengths emerging each week. Beam has been Michigan’s standout event, highlighted by two scores above 49.600, while bars has been its lowest-scoring lineup outside of the season opener. Against a UCLA team that has already broken into the 198s at home, Michigan will need a complete, mistake-free performance across all four events to stay within striking distance.

UCLA returns to Pauley for just the third time this season, looking to build on its second-highest score of the year posted last weekend at Minnesota. The Bruins appear to be settling into more stable lineups—an encouraging sign for such a young roster—but continued attention to detail will be necessary to climb back toward their early-season ranking. Vault remains UCLA’s lowest-scoring event and improving consistency there will be key to unlocking bigger totals. Senior Jordan Chiles has also made it clear that extending her perfect-10 streak is a goal, and with four straight weeks of 10.0s already on the board, all eyes will be on whether she can deliver again in front of a home crowd.

The meet will be streamed on B1G+ at 7 p.m. ET. Not a B1G+ subscriber? Sign up today for the monthly pass with the code COLLEGEGYM3 for just $10.99/month (regularly $12.99/month).

Rotation 1: UCLA VT, Michigan UB

Sumanasekera (UCLA): Yurchenko full to start this meet off, and sticks the landing! What a way to start off this lineup! 9.450 ??

Jordan (UM): Opens up with a clean blind to Jaeger, great extension from the bar to a shoot-over. Ends blind full to double tuck and STICKS! Back to back for the leadoffs. 9.90

Anyimi (UCLA): Yurchenko full and a big scoot back on that landing. 9.750

Clapper (UM): Starts off with a clean blind to piked Jaeger, nice catch on that and a shoot over, a little short and loose on that catch. But a nice double layout with just a hop forward on that landing. 9.775

Rosen (UCLA): Yurchenko 1.5 and nails that landing with just an arm swing to keep her balance on the stick! 9.875

*long wait still trying to get these bar scores figured out

Sumanasakera score updated to a 9.9!

Diaz (UM): Maloney up, nice, really nice shoot over down and a stuck double layout to end! 9.850

Jenkins (UCLA): Yurchenko 1.5 and a step back on that landing. 9.775

*lots of waiting, funky issues with the scoring

Lew (UM): Opens with a blind to piked Jaeger, down to a Pak, great pirouette on the low bar. Dismounts double layout, a little weird landing but takes just a step back on that. 9.850

Sullivan (UCLA): Yurchenko 1.5, really clean landing, just a step forward on that landing. 9.850

Bauman (UM): Beautiful blind to Jaeger right to shoot-over and really goes for that handstand but has to come down to the bar to save herself from actually coming off the bar. Blind to double front dismount and takes a couple steps back on that landing. 9.175

Chiles (UCLA): Yurchenko double full and a big hop back on that landing but HUGE vault to anchor this lineup. 9.825

Parenti (UM): Coming after that fall, in a big position. Opens with a HUGE Ray to shoot over, a little too early leg separation to that kip but nails that double layout dismount! 9.95!

*exhibition Eichman (UCLA): Yurchenko full and a big hop back on that landing. 9.725

*exhibition Sanger (UM): Blind to piked Jaeger and misses the bar. Pak down to the low bar after remounting, dismounts with a double layout and pulls in a little close to the bar and just a step on that landing. 8.925

AFTER ONE: UCLA 49.225, Michigan 49.325

UCLAs lowest scoring event of the season thus far has been vault, and by no means a bad event total of a 49.225, this is the event the Bruins need those bigger scores on in order to keep getting those big 197 close to 198 scores. Although it started with a big 9.9 from the freshman Sumanasakera, the remainder of the vaults lacked a bit of control on its landings contributing to that lower 49 total.

The Wolverines take an early lead over UCLA by a tenth, and even after a fall from the usually solid Bauman in the fifth spot, sophomore Parenti came back big with a 9.950 as the anchor to give Michigan a 49.325 on its first event. Still a ways to go but Michigan leading early going into vault.

Rotation 2: Michigan VT, UCLA UB

Davis (UM): Yurchenko full to start off rotation two, and just a hop back on that landing. Clean vault to start off the Wolverines! 9.775

Alipio (UCLA): Maloney up to shoot-over, nicely done. Blind full to toe on front tuck 1/2 out and stuck!! Great lead off routine for the Bruins! 9.850

Guggino (UM): Yurchenko 1.5 really squats on that landing and hops off the mat. 9.475

Sumanasakera (UCLA): Chow to immediate Pak, really nice. HUGE sky high full out and sticks the landing! 9.90 second of the night for her!

Boozer (UM): Yurchenko full, a little loose in the air and takes a step back on the landing. 9.725

Matthews (UCLA): Gorgeous Pak down, Maloney 1/2 back up, really good. Sticks her double layout dismount, undoubtably her best bar routine of the season! 9.925 career high for the freshman!

Jordan (UM): Yurchenko full and a hop back on the landing. 9.775

Barros (UCLA): Short on that first handstand to a nice Pak, back up to a Maloney 1/2 and another stuck double layout dismount! 9.850

Diaz (UM): Yurchenko 1.5 and just a hop forward on the landing. 9.800

Sullivan (UCLA): Starts off with a gorgeous Tkachev to immediate Pak, stunning. Nails the handstand and a huge double double layout dismount. WOW. That was a big routine for the Bruins! 9.90

Ranger (UM): Yurchenko 1.5 and just a step forward on that, the best landing for the Wolverines this rotation. 9.850

Chiles (UCLA): A beautiful piked Tkachev to immediate Pak, 1/2 pirouette is a little weird, but ANOTHER stuck double layout dismount. WOW! What a huge rotation for the Bruins! 9.925

*exhibition Lew (UM): Clean Yurchenko full and just a scoot back on the landing.

*exhibition Webster-Longin (UCLA): Maloney to the high bar and a nice Pak down. Such stunning lines on this event and close it out strong with a clear hip to immediate full-in dismount STUCK! 9.850

*exhibition Sanger (UM): not shown but a 9.675 in this spot.

AFTER TWO: UCLA 98.725 (49.500), Michigan 98.250 (48.925)

UCLA ran away with this rotation scoring a HUGE 49.500 on bars with four 9.9+ scores highlighted by a pair of 9.925s from Matthews and Chiles. The Bruins looked strong here, locked in on landings, going for the handstands and keeping this momentum up all the way through after not its best opening rotation.

Michigan drops to five tenths behind the Bruins at the half way point, going under a 49 on vault with the highest score of the rotation being a 9.850 from Ranger in the anchor spot. Without 6 of those bigger 10.0 start value vaults, the 9.95s need to be close to perfect and the tenths added up unfortunately for the Wolverines here. Going into the third, Michigan has some work to do on floor to catch UCLA before its too far gone.

Rotation 3: UCLA BB, Michigan FX

Rosen (UCLA): Love her in this lead off position, so confident. Switch leap to split jump. Beat jump to Onodi, just a small bobble on that but kept it on well. BHS LOSO, another little upper body check but nothing too major. Full turn, another little bobble. Dismounts with a stuck round off 1.5! Really fought through that routine but a great lead off to get the Bruins started off on the right foot. 9.850

Davis (UM): Starts off with a solid front layout to front rudi. Switch half to wolf full wolf full down to dance, really nicely done on height and rotation. Second pass, really clean double pike. Just the routine the Wolverines needed to get it started strong! 9.850

Barros (UCLA): Switch leap to straddle 1/4 to start, nice. Side aerial BHS series, solid on that. BHS Gainer full off the side STUCK! 9.90

Walters (UM): Front double full, steps back on the landing. Switch half to straddle full to straddle jump, really nice extension. Ends with a back 1.5 to front full, much cleaner landing and fun ending! 9.875

Eichman (UCLA): BHS LOSO is stunning. Cat leap to side sumi, really well done love that skill.Beat jump to switch half. Wobbles a little on her dance but covers that well. Strong ending tucked front full dismount and just a scoot back on the landing. 9.825

Parenti (UM): Double pike to start, nice landing, but a little chest down on that. Switch half to tuck 1.5 into floor dance. Back 1.5 to front full well controlled to end the routine. 9.875

Sumanasakera (UCLA): Starts with a switch leap to split jump, solid. A little bobble on her dance but goes into a BHS LOSO, solid. Love her fluidity in her dance, so beautiful to watch. Front aerial to split jump, really nice. Full turn is a little off to the side but nothing major. BHS tucked 1.5, takes a step on that landing with just a little locked knees on that. 9.775

Diaz (UM): Front double full to. front kick, really nice landing on that. Wolf full turn, nice and goes into her second pass, front rudi to LOSO, really nice. Switch half to wolf full to her ending dance. Strong routine for the Wolverines in a strong lineup already! Big 9.925!

Chiles (UCLA): BHS LOSO, perfect landing. Cat leap to switch side. Love this dance (coming from a DWTS enthusiast). Side aerial is great. Dismounts round off double full and falls a little out of that landing. UGH! So close. But still, such an amazing routine. 9.875

Bauman (UM): Front double full right into dance, nice. Switch half to wolf full wolf full, nicely done. Ends strong with a back 1.5 to front layout. 9.925!

Alipio (UCLA): BHS BHS LOSO, perfect. Yes Y Scale! Side aerial, beautiful. Leap to switch leap to split jump, really good and pretty connection. Gainer tucked full off the end STUCK! 9.90

Ranger (UM): HUGe double layout, lands right on the line and doesn’t look to have gone out. Switch half to straddle full, nice. Front layout step out to a double tuck and stuck that landing and fought for it! 9.875

*exhibition Webster-Longin (UCLA): LOVE that mount so big!! BHS BHS LOSO little wobble but good. Beat jump to switch half, just a little off but pulls it back very well. Dismounts back 1.5 just a step forward on the landing. 9.775

*exhibition Sanger (UM): Double pike to start and goes out of bounds on that. Switch half to wolf full wolf full into floor dance, nicely done. Second pass back 1.5 to front layout, just a little loose in the air. Ends with a double wolf turn into her ending.

*exhibition Boozer (UM): Opens with a double tuck and comes out a bit early on that landing and had to take a step forward. Really difficult leap series ring leap to torjete ring full. Ends with a back 1.5, misses the punch and does a front tuck to a squat.

AFTER THREE: UCLA 148.075 (49. 350), Michigan 147.725 (49.475)

Another strong rotation for the Bruins on beam, ending with a 49.350. Although UCLA has been stronger on this event in terms of numbers, each athlete up looked confident and strong and that will surely carry over throughout the season. Some of the scores were a little questionable (Alipio especially in that anchor spot) but nonetheless, a strong third rotation heading into one of its best.

Michigan delivered on floor when it needed to, coming back after a sub 49 score on vault with a big 49.475 on floor. With a pair of 9.925s in the fourth and fifth spots from Diaz and Bauman, the Wolverines really helped itself in this rotation. Heading to beam where Michigan has been excellent the past few weeks, the Wolverines have to not let the environment derail the momentum and finish this competition on a high note.

Rotation 4: Michigan BB, UCLA FX

Parenti (UM): BHS LOSO, really nice start after a little bobble on that full turn. Switch leap to split jump, nicely done. Front aerial to split jump, good on that connection. Ends with a solid round off 1.5 and nails that landing! Excellent lead off for the Wolverines! 9.875

Rosen (UCLA): Love love love this routine. Starts off strong with a double tuck, great landing. HUGE double pike for the second pass and another great landing. Switch ring to switch half to wolf and ends with a strong back 1.5 to front layout. Another really great routine to lead off this floor lineup! 9.90 lead off!

Walters (UM): Little full turn wobble. Front toss and starts to fall breaks that connection and has to redo. Second time great front toss to BHS. Leap to switch half to beat jump, nicely done. Layout front full to a hop forward to close out. 9.650

Alipio (UCLA): STUCK double pike to start off. Love her energy in this routine. Switch ring to switch half to wolf full down to some beautiful floor dance. Great double wolf turn. Last pass another STICK, back 1.5 to front layout. HMM, don’t really see any deductions… 9.95!!

Jordan (UM): Needs a big score after that small dip in the scores. Starts with a side aerial to BHS series, nice. Straddle 1/2, small wobble on the landing. Front toss and has a bigger wobble on that and breaks at her hips a bit. Ends with a Gainer pike off the end and sticks that landing. 9.700

Barros (UCLA): Back 1.5 to front layout to start, clean landing. Switch full into some fun dance! Front thru to double tuck and another really great landing! Switch half to wolf full to end! Third 9.9!

Bauman (UM): BHS LOSO, solid to start. Split to straddle 1/2 to sissone, moves well through that difficult connection. Straight leg side sumi, fun! Done great. Dismounts Gainer pike off the end and hops back on that landing. But the routine Michigan needed to get it back on track. 9.850

Sumanasakera (UCLA): Another big love for this routine. Double layout is so good! Switch ring to Torjete to wolf full, nice rotation on that. Love this dance, done so beautifully. Back 1.5 to front layout, really nicely done! 9.90

Ranger (UM): BHS LOSO LOSO, really well done. Switch leap to pike jump, love that connection. Perfect front toss, super solid. Round off double tuck dismount and STICKS THAT! So impressive, wow. 9.925!

Sullivan (UCLA): It’s Britney, let’s go. Double layout to start, a little too much power but handles it well. Torjete full to straddle full nicely done and ends strong with a front thru to double tuck and that landing is much cleaner.

Boozer (UM): Following a big 9.925, Boozer starts with a clean switch leap to switch split to straddle jump, beautiful. Front aerial is nice. BHS LOSO, solid. Ends with stuck BHS Gainer! Great ending for the Wolverines.

Chiles (UCLA): Big double layout to start, perfection. Torjete full to wolf full and gets that around nicely. Ends strong with a front thru to double tuck, another perfect landing. WOW, everytime! ITS ANOTHER 10.0!

*exhibition Lew (UM): not shown but a 9.100.

*exhibition Webster-Longin (UCLA): Front double full and almost sits it down but works to keep it on her feet. HUGE back 1.5 to front layout to come back strong. Nice leaps down the middle into fun dance. Front rudi to end! 9.600

*exhibition Sanger (UM): BHS LOSO really fights to keep it on. Side aerial, a couple arm swings to fight to stay on. Switch half and is off the beam. Ends with a BHS Gainer full and a hop back on that.

*exhibition Matthews (UCLA): HUGE whip back to BHS BHS double tuck, just a small scoot of the front foot. Performance quality thru the ROOF. Torjete full to wolf full, nice. Double wolf turn and falls out of it a bit. Ends with a strong back 1.5 to front layout.

FINAL: UCLA 197.725, Michigan 196.975

A close meet at several points, but UCLA came away with a home win and a big 49.650 on floor and capped with a 10.0 for Chiles to close out this dual. With a lower vault score to start off the meet, UCLA came back strong and showed up on the other three to get another strong score of a 197.725.

Michigan struggled a bit in the second rotation on vault, but had one of its best floor rotations of the season but came away with a team total under a 197. Definite highlights in this competition, Parenti putting up a big 9.950 on bars and Ranger a huge 9.925 on beam and several big moments in between for the Wolverines, but not fully the way Michigan wanted to perform tonight.

VT: Sumanasakera (UCLA) 9.90

UB: Parenti (UM) 9.950

BB: Ranger (UM) 9.925

FX: Chiles (UCLA) 10.0

AA: Chiles (UCLA) 39.625
