LIVE BLOG: Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics National Invitational Championship Event Finals

Welcome to day three of the Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics National Invitational Championship—we’re so glad you’re here! This final session features the best of the best on each apparatus, all competing for individual event titles.

The WCGNIC is the only national championship in collegiate gymnastics that crowns individual champions in a separate event finals session, preserving a nearly lost tradition in the NCAA.

Vault is often the most tightly contested and unpredictable event final due to the start value differential. The gymnast who nails the landing will likely come away with the title.

On bars, the Centenary Gold Dome’s low ceiling has a reputation for disrupting even the best bar swingers. Expect standout routines to include sharp handstands, clean rhythm and, of course, a stuck landing.

Beam is where many finalists truly shine. This event will showcase unique acro combinations and dynamic dance elements across the board.

Floor is where we’ll see athletes flying high and sticking landings with authority. Watch out for freshman standout Kyleigh Ghambari, whose amplitude and consistently cold-stuck double backs have made her a fan favorite this season.

Rotation 1: VT and BB 1

King (TWU, BB): BHS LOSO. No hesitation. Punch front, tight arms. Great. Switch leap, straddle 1/4. A slight adjustment. A baby hop in place on the back 1.5 dismount. That’s how you start a beam final. 9.7750

Sepulveda (UB, VT): Yurchenko layout full, small amount of piking down at the end with a medium step back. 9.6625

Upton (TWU, BB): BHS LOSO. Money. Switch leap, straddle half. A flicker of a wobble on dance. Rushed some on the aerial two feet today and had to take the fall. Held onto the stick on the front full dismount. 9.075

After 3:

The best and worst thing about this championship is that you never know who is going to win these things. So far, floor is led by the duo of Pioneers Bailey Upton and Sophie Hernandez with teammate Kyleigh Ghanbari still to go. Price is holding on to the bar lead with fellow all arounder Taylor Ingle just behind her.

Rotation 4: UB and FX 2

Ghanbari (TWU, FX): The creepiest routine of the day. We love. Double pike, a step forward to the lunge. Switch side, wolf full, dance out. Front full, front lay. Got it today. Double tuck, bounced OOB on that one. 9.575

Price (Fisk, FX): Double pike, controlled into the lunge. Switch half, wolf 1.5. Strong shaping. Back 1.5, front full. So easy. My oh my. Has anyone ever won all four events and the all around? That would be wild. 9.9000

Manley (UAA, UB): Blind full, Tkatchev. Nice. Swing half, overshoot hand. Great shape on the last HS. Blind full, double pike. A little underrotated with a step forward. 9.7750

Coyle (UB, FX): Rudi to double stage. Great height. Way above our heads. Switch half, wolf full. Wanting more amplitude on that one. Tucked Rudi to double stag. Back 1.5, front tuck. Great save, mistimed the punch on the connection. 9.7125

FINAL:

Morgan Price reigned supreme in the event finals today, claiming a share of every single event title. I don’t know that we’ll ever see something like this happen again, but I’m glad to have witnessed it in person. Kaitlyn Hoiland claimed a share of the bar title as well, finishing her TWU career in style.

  1. I love that the WCGNIC keeps the tradition of separate event finals alive—individual event specialists finally get their moment! Curious to see how athletes adapt on bars with the low ceiling at the Centenary Gold Dome—definitely adds a unique twist to the competition.
