LIVE BLOG: No. 3 LSU at No. 9 Missouri

After a stellar opening three weeks to its season, LSU will hope to keep this momentum going throughout the season. Last week, the Tigers defeated the Kentucky Wildcats by .525 with a 198.125 clinched by a perfect 10 by Kiya Johnson on the floor. Multiple tens were thrown at this meet with a 10 from Haleigh Bryant on bars and a 9.975 on vault also from Bryant. The Tigers were able to finally put it together on beam scoring a 49.425 and not counting a score below 9.850. Although this was their lowest event score of the night, it is still a massive score that the Tigers will hope to build upon throughout the season. Other notable numbers include a 9.950 from KJ Johnson and Bryant on floor, a 9.925 from McClain’s floor debut, and a pair of 9.925s from Schoenherr on vault and bars.

The other Tigers in the SEC also had a successful weekend defeating the Georgia Bulldogs with a 197.400 last weekend. The Tigers put up great event scores in the 49.400+ range on beam and floor with vault not too far behind. If Missouri does have a weakness, it is on the bars where the team struggled to break into the 9.9 range until transfer Mara Titarsolej broke the Missouri bar record with a 9.975. Titarsolej has been a huge asset to this bar team, but unfortunately one gymnast cannot carry a rotation when it comes to competing against teams of SEC caliber. Last year’s vault and floor 1-2 punch of Celestine to Moore as the anchors, has now been transformed to a 1-2-3 punch with the addition of fantastic freshman Hannah Horton who has been turning heads this season. Missouri has been proving itself as a real threat in the SEC the last couple seasons and has only gotten better this season.

The classic Tigers vs. Tigers matchup will be an interesting meet as always with spectacular gymnastics to expect from both teams. LSU absolutely has the upper hand here, but Missouri can absolutely give it a run for its money.

After 2: Missouri 98.825 LSU 98.725

Missouri still leads at the half way point. With only a .100 lead, the Missouri Tigers will need to keep it up. It is still anybody’s meet. Jay Clark did not seem too thrilled with LSU’s performance on vault and Missouri is coming up on two strong events.
