Live Blog: Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad Session 3 with No. 6 California, No. 14 Michigan State, No. 19 BYU, and No. 30 N.C. State

The Collegiate Quad meets wrap up tonight as underdogs from the Big Ten, Pac-12, Mountain West, and ACC take the floor. California and Michigan State will both factor in their conference championship races as well as be on the nationals bubble this year, while N.C. State and BYU are hoping to return to regionals.

While neither team was at their best, with beam and floor errors diluting their team scores, the Golden Bears and Spartans both had individuals shine in Week 1. Mya Lauzon’s 39.600 in the all around topped California’s Super 16 session ahead of some impressive names, while Michigan State’s Sage Kellerman stuck her front handspring pike half to hit perfection for the first time in her career and notch the first 10.0 on vault of 2024.

The Wolfpack and Cougars have individual standouts, too. BYU fifth-year Anyssa Alvarado upped her career-high on bars to a 9.950 to start her year, while Chloe Negrete also used her wealth of experience to lead N.C. State with a 9.900 on beam and 9.875 on vault.

Follow along with video (ACC Network) and scores!

After 1: California 49.525, Michigan State 49.325, BYU 49.000, N.C. State 49.000

A hit first rotation from everyone! The Golden Bears were dialed in on vault, hitting nearly every landing for a total that tops all of their vault totals from 2023. That debut for Mayhew followed up by Lauzon notched California the opening lead. Close behind is the Spartans, who did an excellent job rallying from Schulte’s weird opening fall. BYU and N.C. State will be pleased with their starts, too, as neither hit the ideal 49 mark on their respective events last weekend. Improvement all around.

Rotation Totals: N.C. State 49.175, California 49.500, Michigan State 48.800, BYU 49.075

After 2: California 99.025, N.C. State 98.175, BYU 98.150, Michigan State 98.125

More hits! The Golden Bears are currently on 198 pace after shining on their standout event, and would be the first team to hit that championship-contending total in 2024. The Spartans relinquished second place after a nervy beam rotation that also cost them a 49, but it was clutch to avoid counting a fall as they can make up ground with strong events to go. The Cougars and Wolfpack will again be happy after going over 49 and beating their opening weekend totals on the event and staying within reach of first. But, they’ll need to find more explosive numbers, not just consistent, to challenge Cal and stay ahead of Michigan State.

Rotation 3: BYU Vault, N.C. State Bars, California Beam, Michigan State Floor

Nyah Smith (MSU): Full-in, chest low, switch leap to switch side straddle full, lots of height, front tuck to double tuck, well controlled. 9.850

Cesario (Cal): Low beam choreo to start, full turn, BHS LOSO, big check but stays on, switch leap to switch half, nice lines, dismounts RO 1.5, step forward. 9.725

Eaquinto (BYU): Yfull. Good amplitude, hops back on the landing. 9.775

Harper (NCSt): Clear hip to Geinger, not a ton of rotation but caught well, good transition to the low bar, legs almost give out on double layout but manages just a step. 9.625

Harkness (MSU): Mounts with a FTDT, somewhat of a squat on the landing but works well into a lunge, switch leap to tour jete half wolf full, gets them all rotated fully, front tuck to double tuck, chest forward but sticks. 9.850

A perfect 10 for eMjae Frazier on beam!

Lauzon (Cal): Opens with her lovely and back-breaking mount sequence, wolf turn, BHS BHS LOSO, problem-free, switch leap to split jump, dismounts RO double full, stuck! 9.925

Rotation Totals: BYU 49.025, N.C. State 48.750, California 49.300, Michigan State 49.450

After 3: California 148.325, Michigan State 147.575, BYU 147.175, N.C. State 146.925

California is in control. While not without a few moments on beam, the Golden Bears hit a strong lineup thanks to Frazier’s mid-rotation perfect score. While a 198 may be out of reach, they have the opportunity to put up a massive number heading to floor-what has been the highest scoring event of this Collegiate Quad all weekend. The Spartans, as expected, clawed back into it after a great floor rotation of their own. Michigan State can also earn itself a respectable total with some hit vaults. BYU was once again consistent, and moves to its best event next to earn a very high new season high, barring any mishaps. The Wolfpack were on par with their Week 1 total on bars, and can also join the improvement club if it can conquer beam.

Rotation 4: Michigan State Vault, BYU Bars, N.C. State Beam, California Floor

Nyah Smith (MSU): Yfull. Good distance and clean, hops back. 9.775

Mason (BYU): Toe on to Maloney Pak, leg separation, hits the half pirouette well, dismounts double layout, hop back. 9.825

Kane (Cal): Mounts with a front full to Rudi, switch side half to wolf jump, precise, RO 1.5 front layout to close. 9.875

Tucker (MSU): Y1.5. Great distance, short, squat and step back. 9.825

Alvarado (BYU): Toe on, Maloney to bail, legs glued together, works the last handstand, dismounts double layout, hop forward. 9.650

Jennings (NCSt): Full turn, BHS BHS LOSO, confident, switch leap to tuck 3/4, a pause between, doubtful for connection, side aerial, gainer full with a hop. 9.750

Stephen (MSU): Y1.5. Sky high, great in the air, bounding step forward. 9.775

Eaquinto (BYU): Toe on, Maloney Pak, caught a tad close, great half pirouette, dismounts double layout, out and takes a step forward. 9.775

Cesario (Cal): RO 1.5 front full right into choreo, switch half wolf full, just shy of rotation on the second leap, huge closing double tuck, slides both feet back in the lunge. 9.850

Zsarmani (MSU): Y1.5. Short and stumbles back but doesn’t sit. 9.575

Ortega (NCSt): Gets started with her L turn, right at 90 degrees, BHS Onodi, momentum carried her forward and a check to the side, switch leap to split jump to beat jump, some hesitation in there, front walkover to a check, switch leap to gainer pike, stuck. 9.650

Kellerman (MSU): FHS pike half. Nearly sticks, tiny slide back. 9.925

Mayhew (Cal): Front double full front tuck, is short on the first salto and misses the punch and sits it, switch ring to switch half, RO 1.5 front layout is hit. 9.250

Alvarado (BYU): Toe on, Maloney Pak, gorgeous, bit of a wobble on the jump to the high bar, dismounts full twisting double layout, small foot slide. 9.850

Lauzon (Cal): Mounts with a front double full front tuck, good control into the lunge, switch ring switch half, RO 1.5 front full is clean. 9.975

Nikki Smith (MSU): Y1.5. Big off the table, flares it out, tiny tiny hop forward. 9.850

Negrete (NCSt): Full turn, front aerial BHS, slow but kept it moving, cat leap to switch half to beat jump, much quicker connection, split jump, lovely, dismounts RO double full, hop back.

Frazier (Cal): Starts with a double layout, fantastic, switch ring to switch half to split half, great extension, ends the meet with front tuck to double tuck, a little off-line and close to OOB but good chest position. 9.950

Rotation Totals: Michigan State 49.150, BYU 48.925, N.C. State 48.750, California 49.550

Final: California 197.875, Michigan State 196.725, BYU 196.100, N.C. State 195.675

Improvement all around! Every team beat their opening week totals, with N.C. making a drastic improvement from a debut 193. California put up one of the best scores of the young season with a complete performance and some standout scores from Lauzon and Frazier, who’re going to make waves this season. The Spartans put up a good fight, rallying from a few mistakes, but too many tenths were lost on landings in the later rotations to make a full comeback.
