2024 National Title Watchlist

We’re back with our second of four watchlists for the 2024 season! The season is just over a week away, and parity across the country is at an all-time high. Which teams are in true contention for the national title? We break down the contenders.

Oklahoma

If we’ve learned anything in the last decade, it’s that it is hard to bet against KJ Kindler’s Sooners. The back-to-back reigning champions look poised to challenge for a three-peat. Despite graduating massive names like Olivia Trautman, the incoming class is solid, and stars like Ragan Smith, Audrey Davis, and Katherine LeVasseur are back for more.

LSU

The Tigers have been dangerously close to its first title several times before, but this year might finally be the year. There are six COVID year seniors on the roster, two of whom transferred in, meaning the Tigers didn’t lose any routines from their 2023 Final Four run. Kiya Johnson looks to be stronger than ever after tearing her Achilles, while Haleigh Bryant and Aleah Finnegan will look to lead the Tigers to their first title after dominating in the all-around last season.

Florida

The Gators haven’t hoisted the trophy since the end of their three-peat from 2013 to 2015. Despite Trinity Thomas’ graduation and Kayla DiCello’s deferral, this Florida squad is looking dangerous. The freshmen are, as a class, producing a lot of lineup-quality routines, and returning stars like Sloane Blakely are in top form. This could finally be the year that Jenny Rowland secures her first title.

Utah

The Utes have had about the rockiest preseason a team could have, from Kara Eaker’s departure amid accusations of verbal and emotional abuse and Tom Farden’s ensuing separation from the team. New head coach Carly Dockendorf is in place, having already shed the interim tag on her title, and Utah is ready to work. Can the Utes pull together to win their first title since 1995? Time will tell, but this talented group is certainly capable of that level of gymnastics.

Michigan

While the Wolverines are underdogs this season, they’re the only program outside of Oklahoma with team national champions on their roster after their win in 2021. Gabby Wilson, Naomi Morrison, and reigning AAI award winner Sierra Brooks have the ability to carry the Wolverines far, but title hopes rely on breakout seasons from underclassmen.

UCLA

The Bruins took a hit, losing two key gymnasts–Jordan Chiles and Ana Padurariu–to Olympic deferrals. But the team still has the poise and explosiveness to contend if they put it all together. Head coach Janelle McDonald impressed in her debut season and will be put to the test in year two to get the best out of a talented roster.

  1. Cal should be on this list maybe ahead of Michigan.
Also Alabama, Kentucky, and Michigan State will be dangerous.
