Signing day is always a flurry of expected signings, new commitments, and—if we’re lucky—some bombshell news. This year, the class of 2024 gave us a few surprises and many new commitments across all levels of the sport. There are some early arrivals for this season and some long-awaited commitments from gymnasts who have deferred.
TaeLyn Canty Added to North Carolina’s Recruiting Class
Canty had previously announced narrowing her options to North Carolina, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Pittsburgh, but did not post a commitment announcement. That announcement came from a post by North Carolina on signing day. Canty’s strongest event is vault where she has been training a Yurchenko one and a half that would be a great addition to the Tar Heels’ lineup.
Ondine Achampong Makes It Official
Five-star Achampong, whose world silver medal makes her one of the top prospects in Cal gymnastics history, was initially part of the class of 2022 before quietly failing to sign two years in a row. Even though she maintained her intention to head to Berkeley in interviews, she’s such a strong recruit that speculation about a commitment switch was inevitable. No such luck for hopeful fans of other teams: As of Wednesday, she’s officially a Golden Bear.
Clemson Is Getting One More for Its Inaugural Season
Trinity Webb was set to join the Tigers for the 2025 season, but will now be joining the team in January. Webb is a standout on bars with a career-high in level 10 of a 9.9 and projects to make the lineup on that event.
Ui Soma to Stanford (For Real This Time!)
Last November, five–star recruit Ui Soma was one of the big mysteries of the signing period. Seemingly confirmed as at least a Stanford commit, if not signee, for the upcoming season by several outside data points, neither she nor the Cardinal ever formally acknowledged her plans. When she didn’t appear on the roster this fall it was reasonable to assume that she had deferred, but again, no confirmation was forthcoming from either party. Finally, this Thursday, Stanford announced Soma as a signee in the class of 2024. Her potential in the NCAA is almost limitless.
Still No Shilese Jones
Sometimes it feels like lifetimes have passed since Jones first committed to Florida. Our latest information was that she intended to head to Gainesville in the fall of 2024 after the Paris Olympics, but four years after her originally planned signing day, she still hasn’t put pen to NLI, and Florida may have filled all its scholarship spots for the upcoming season. Everyone wants to know what the plan is here.
