Ui Soma saluting at the beam

LIVE BLOG: No. 14 Stanford at No. 3 UCLA

UCLA is riding high after securing the Big Ten regular-season title, but one milestone still eludes the Bruins—they are the only team in the top five yet to break the 198 mark. A home meet, fueled by the energy of the Pauley Pavilion crowd, could be the perfect opportunity to finally hit that benchmark. Keep an eye on the electric floor duo of Brooklyn Moors and Jordan Chiles, as well as how close to perfection Chae Campbell can get on her Yurchenko full.

After a surprise nationals run last season, Stanford is now in position to secure a seeded spot for regionals. To solidify its standing, the Cardinal will be hunting for another road score in the 197s. Senior Brenna Neault has been a steady all-around force, while junior Anna Roberts continues to be a difference-maker. While UCLA enters as the favorite, a sharp Stanford performance—paired with any missteps from the Bruins—could make things interesting.

Rotation 1: UCLA VT, Stanford UB

Lee (UCLA): Yfull, nice and floaty with a small scoot back on landing. 9.825

Gutierrez (Stan): Straddle jaeger to overshoot. Double front half out, stuck cold and held the landing position for a solid five seconds to show she had it. 9.925

Moors (UCLA): Front handspring pike half with a step back. 9.825

Chang (Stan): Maloney, pak, good form on both. Double layout, releases the bar a little early and takes a hop back. 9.8

Webster-Longin (UCLA): Y1.5, can’t absorb the landing and takes a big stumble-step out of it. 9.675

Neault (Stan): Maloney with a little leg separation, better on the pak. Lovely full pirouette. And… my stream cut out for her dismount. Sigh. 9.85

McGowan (UCLA): Y1.5, lands a bit deep and takes a big hop forward. 9.725

Sorrento (Stan): Maloney with some flexed feet, pak with a bit of leg separation. Has to repeat a cast handstand to get back into the rhythm of the routine. Sticks the double layout dismount. On replay you can see how much she fought for that stick. 9.65

Campbell (UCLA): Yfull, huge height and distance, flared out beautifully. Looked stuck at first but on replay you can see she slid back a little. 9.9

Roberts (Stan): Floaty pak and gorgeous opening handstand positions. Van Leeuwen is good. Double lay with a tiny hop in place. 9.925

Chiles (UCLA): Half on tucked half with a small hop back. 9.95

Soma (Stan): Maloney to pak, great form. She holds every handstand for just about an eternity. Good Van Leeuwen. Double lay with a small hop forward. 9.85

Anastasi (UCLA ex.): Yfull with very bent knees and a small shuffle on landing. 9.8

Robinson (Stan. ex.): Great height on her straddle jaeger. Pak with leg separation, switch kip. Full twisting double back with a step. 9.75

Wren (UCLA ex.): Front handspring pike half off and falls. 9.025

After 1: Stanford 49.350, UCLA 49.225

The Cardinal has the lead after one rotation! Stanford showed great handstands and solid landings, with a big 9.925 in the leadoff from Gutierrez. UCLA closed strong with Campbell and Chiles, but some very hoppy landings early in the rotation kept the Bruins from performing at their absolute best. This is shaping up to be an exciting meet!

Rotation 2: Stanford VT, UCLA UB

Chang (Stan): Yfull, a little closed in the hips but stuck cold! 9.85

I swear the stick sticks get bigger every week…

Campbell (UCLA): Maloney, slightly loose in the bail. Blind half to double front, takes a small stumble back. 9.75

Neault (Stan): Yurchenko full on pike off with some chest down and a hop back. 9.8

Webster-Longin (UCLA): Maloney, pak, legs GLUED together. Clear hip to full out, stuck! Great routine! 9.925

Soma (Stan): Yfull, good amplitude. Some leg form and pike down with a bounce back and then a step. 9.775

Malabuyo (UCLA): Maloney, pak with some leg separation. Full twisting double back, stuck! 9.875

Janelle’s reactions are my favorite.

Nguyen (Stan): Y1.5 takes a couple big steps out of it and ends up stepping right off the mat. 9.625

McGowan (UCLA): Clear hip to straddle tkatchev to overshoot. Double layout with a small scootch forward. 9.825

Gutierrez (Stan): Y1.5, some leg form but stuck! Once again holds the stick for longer than she needs to to show it off. 9.875

Esparza (UCLA): Maloney, Bhardwaj, beautiful. Van Leeuwen, slightly short on the last handstand, double lay with a big step forward. 9.775

Roberts (Stan): Y1.5, huge block and great form in the air, with a medium hop forward. 9.825

Chiles (UCLA): Sky high piked Tkatchev to pak. Double lay with a small hop in place. 9.95

Barros (UCLA ex.): Gorgeous first handstand. Maloney, archy pak, I love how patient her swing is. Slightly short on her half pirouette, much better final handstand. Pike-y double lay with a hop. 9.8

Erdoes (UCLA ex.): Straddle Jaeger to bail, really nice. Full twisting double back, stuck! What a great senior night routine! 9.85

After 2: UCLA 98.575, Stanford 98.475

UCLA has a one-tenth lead at the halfway point of the meet! Stanford avoided counting a score in the 9.6s, and Gutierrez had another standout routine. UCLA got the job done on bars, tying Stanford’s score on the event. Chiles has also already taken the vault and bars titles with two 9.950s

Rotation 3: UCLA BB, Stanford FX

Lee (UCLA): Front aerial to split jump, really attacks the beam. Bhs loso, solid. Switch leap to split jump, no problem. Good full turn. Bhs gainer full, stuck. Great leadoff (or should I say Lee-doff?) 9.925

Dean (Stan): Tinsica into a straddle jump. Super unique and fun! Back 1.5 to front full, lands a bit short but disguises it with the lunge. Great split positions in all of her leaps. 9.8

Chiles (UCLA): Bhs loso, tiniest food wobble but covers well. Again not completely centered on the switch side but covers well. Full turn with a small shoulder dip. Rock solid on her side aerial. RO double twist with a small scot back. 9.9 might be a touch generous

Carter (Stan): Opens with a punch Rudi to a big straddle jump. Back 1.5 to front half, dances out of it to disguise a lack of control, but I’m not sure if the judges will be fooled. 9.75

Campbell (UCLA): Bhs to flick lay to two feet, snaps her arms to her size to prevent any wobbles. Split leap to switch half to beat jump, nice. Easy full turn. Cartwheel gainer full, stuck. 9.9

Robinson (Stan): Double tuck to open, well executed. Memmel, gets it all the way around. Back 1.5 to Barani to straddle jump, great control. I like the funk music/theme of the routine. Double pike, great control again. And a death drop to close. 9.875

Moors (UCLA): Valdez, such a gorgeous start to the routine. Front aerial to bhs, super smooth. Quickly through the full turn. Cat leap to side aerial, good. Beat jump to switch half to beat jump, very confident. Tuck front full dismount with a step back. 9.9

Walker (Stan): Double pike, can’t control the lunge and takes a bounce back. Really draws you in with her choreography. Nice precision in her back to back wolf fulls. Punch front to double back, perfect lunge on that pass. 9.75

Alipio (UCLA): Kicks out of the full turn. Bhs bhs loso, tiniest shoulder dip. Side aerial, snaps her arms back and no wobbles. Lovely extension in her leap series. Tucked gainer full off the end of the beam, stuck. 9.925

Roberts (Stan): Huge full in to open. Punch layout to Rudi, a little underrotated and has to take a hop forward. 9.85

Malabuyo (UCLA): UCLA already has a 49.550 on beam. Wolf turn, very clean. Bhs loso, a little off center. Front aerial to beat jump to bhs swingdown, fun combination. Split jump, split ring, again a little off center on landing. Bhs gainer full, stuck. 9.925

Neault (Stan): This music in Pauley Pavilion just feels right. Huge double pike with a front foot slide in the lunge. Switch leap into a switch ring full, good ring position. Floaty Rudi. Back 1.5 to front lay, nice control out of it. 9.85

Clay (UCLA ex.): Switch leap into a standing switch split, great extension. Front aerial to bhs, stumble and breaks at the hips but stays on the beam. Kicks out of the full turn. Bhs gainer full off the end of the beam, stuck. 9.675

Nguyen (Stan. ex.): Took Soma’s planned exhibition spot. Opens with a double lay, lifts her front foot on the lunge but stays in bounds. Punch front to double tuck, jumps back into the lunge. 9.675

Erdoes (UCLA ex.): Bhs loso, super smooth. Great lines in her leap combination. Calm full turn. Cartwheel gainer full with a slide back. 9.825

After 3: UCLA 148.150, Stanford 147.600

UCLA threw down the gauntlet with that beam routine. The Bruins dropped a 9.900 and now have a much more comfortable lead over Stanford with just their home floor party to go. That wasn’t Stanford’s highest scoring floor rotation, with some landing errors throughout, but it still broke 49 and will look to finish strong on beam.

Rotation 4: Stanford BB, UCLA FX

Dean (Stan): Kicks out of the full turn. Side aerial to loso, solid. Straddle jump, straddle quarter, no wobbles. RO 1.5 twist, hangs on to the stick! 9.875

Lee (UCLA): Double tuck, slides back into the lunge. Front lay to front full, dances out of it. Front leg a little low in the switch ring. Double pike, lands deep in the knees but muscles out a lunge. 9.75

Landry (Stan): Double wolf turn, very difficult and no problems at all. Bhs loso, clean. Split leap, split ring, nice position on both. Lovely control in the scale. Gainer pike off the end of the beam, stuck. 9.925

McGowan (UCLA): Opens with a full in, steps forward into the lunge. Lots of height in her leap pass. The floor party is in full swing with all her teammates dancing with her! Back 1.5 to front full to close. 9.925

Carter (Stan): Unique mount, jumps into a split on the beam. Tidy full turn. Bhs bhs loso, good. Straddle half, a little low, to a straddle jump with better extension. Front gainer full with a scoot back. 9.9

Malabuyo (UCLA): Opens with a double pike, great height and controls the landing. Switch ring to switch half to wolf full. Double wolf turn is clean. Back 1.5 to front lay, good. What a great routine for her last floor set in Pauley! 9.9

Neault (Stan): Bhs bhs loso, slight shoulder dip at the end of the series. I love seeing a bit of her personality come through on the beam. Beat jump to split ring, solid. Lovely control in her full turn. RO 1.5 twist, stuck. 9.95

Campbell (UCLA): Opens with a full in, a little underrotated and steps forward into the lunge. Great split position in her leaps. Front lay to front full, dances out of it. Breaks it down in the corner with BJ Das. Double tuck, steps forward into the lunge again. All the emotions are coming out now that the routine is over. 9.825

Roberts (Stan): Speedy wolf 1.5. Switch leap, split leap, no problem. Bhs loso, snaps the arms back to avoid a wobble. Side aerial with a small bobble. Repeats the skill, connects it into a split jump this time. Bhs gainer full, fights to hold the stick. 9.85

Chiles (UCLA): Double lay to open, great. Great height in her leaps. Punch front to double back, great landing. “Great” appears to be the word of that routine. 9.95

Why do we have 10.0 watch cam on when we know she has a 9.95?

Robinson (Stan): Falls on her series. Switch leap to split jump. Hitch kick to side aerial with a small check. Split half on the side of the beam. Good full turn. Moonwalk! RO 1.5 twist, stuck. Tough routine for her but she still gets the stick stick! 9.225

Moors (UCLA): Yesss Moors anchoring UCLA floor! Front double twist to punch front. Her usual floaty LOSO. The TOE POINT on her leaps. Closes with a Rudi. And the tears start flowing as she hugs her teammates. 9.925

Soma (Stan. ex.): Full turn, a little off center but brings it back under control. Switch leap, split leap, good. Side aerial, rock solid. Bhs loso, nice lift and no problems on landing. Switch half, a bit low and a wobble, then a beat jump. Gainer pike with a hop back. 9.725

Clay (UCLA ex.): Punch front to double tuck, bounces back in the lunge. Apparently the story in the choreography is fighting aliens. Not sure I’m getting that but it’s definitely entertaining. Massive height in her leaps. Double pike to close. 9.750

Barros (UCLA ex.): Back 1.5 to front lay and a small hop. Double tuck, good landing. Closes with a strong leap pass. 9.825

FINAL: UCLA 197.675, Stanford 197.100

UCLA didn’t break that elusive 198 mark, but it still had a strong senior night, featuring lots of great routines and exhibitions from the graduating class. The Bruins’ beam rotation was a particular highlight. Stanford will happily take a 197+ away score, and plus a Brenna Neault beam title.

VT: Chiles (UCLA) – 9.950
UB: Chiles (UCLA) – 9.950
BB: Neault (Stanford) – 9.950
FX: Chiles (UCLA) – 9.950
