We’re narrowing in on the 2023 season, and it wouldn’t be a new year without some predictions! We’ll be answering one pressing question over the course of eight days as we gear up for the first meet on January 6.
The 2022 freshman class was huge and deep, setting up 2023 to be more of a wild card. Which gymnast will reign supreme and kick her college career off on the highest note?
Who Will Be the Top Freshman in 2023?
Winner: Selena Harris, UCLA (3 votes)
Runners-up: Faith Torrez, Oklahoma (2 votes), Morgan Price, Fisk (2 votes)
Elizabeth: I think our No. 1-rated recruit Selena Harris is going to make waves at UCLA.
Peri: Morgan Price made waves with her commitment switch from Arkansas to Fisk, and is poised to become the team’s first franchise player—borrowing a term from outside gymnastics.
Alyssa: I agree with Elizabeth here. Selena Harris is on a team where I see her being a star right away.
Emily M: UCLA is looking to regain some of its shine in 2023, and Selena Harris is just the kind of gymnast to make it happen. I think she’ll take this year by storm.
Rebecca: To me, Faith Torrez is the frontrunner. While I’m also extremely high on Selena Harris, I think the combination of Torrez’ gymnastics style and Oklahoma’s coaching mean that she’ll get the hang of details like college landings just a little faster, paying off in her scores.
Savanna: It’s a close tie, but I think Faith Torrez will slightly edge out Selena Harris for top freshman. She already appears to be making waves by competing in the all-around at Oklahoma’s recent intrasquad, and she looks great in all of the training footage we’ve seen. She’s ready to take on college gymnastics.
Allison: I’m with Peri on this. I think Morgan Price is poised not only to rock her freshman year but prove that Fisk is a force.
