Leotard Rankings: NCAA Nationals

When the college gymnastics season rolls around, some fans are excited for perfect 10s while others look forward to difficult skills and fun choreography. But we’re not going to lie. While those things are great, we love the leos most of all. And so, we’re back for another season of leotard rankings!

Each week we’re analyzing new designs to find our weekly faves. As always, leos can earn up to three points for design, up to one point each for fabric, sparkle, school spirit, and uniqueness, and up to three points for overall appearance. This week Rebecca S, Claire B, Lela, Izzi, Aaron, Katie, Mariah, and Katherine are joining editor-in-chief Elizabeth for judging.

Don’t agree with our ranking? Make your opinion heard by voting in the fan poll at the end of the article each week or by voicing your thoughts on social media!

When I first saw this leo, I wasn’t bored but I was still not overly enthused. It is, after all, another blue and black leo with minimal orange. However, when I was on the floor I learned that the arm sparkles make a gator mouth when the gymnasts do the chomp in their floor routine. THAT is the kind of creativity and school spirit I can get behind!

Yes, it’s “another pretty blue/black leo,” but the black elements and especially the Gator sparkles take it to the next level. That open, strappy back goes from “good” to “great” in my book thanks to the black piping.

Lela: 8.500

Florida rarely goes all in on its Florida-ness (and there are probably good reasons for that waves hand at Florida), but I appreciate that it at least leaned into the Gator part here. Still no orange with the blue, but we have that cool gator-skin effect and the teeth along the arms to make the chomp. It’s different, but it’s especially different for Florida and I dig it.

I think this rating might be buoyed by the rough crop of leos this week… but I did enjoy this. I like the sporty silhouette, and I adore the gator skin pattern! What a fun detail. I love that they wore their other gator skin leo for finals.

Aaron: 9.100

Design 2.7/3, Fabric 1/1, Sparkle 1/1, School Spirit 1/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.6/3

This leotard is simple but stunning! I am obsessed with the reptile skin design with the rhinestones and the shade of blue is gorgeous. I think the mesh could have been incorporated a bit differently, but overall, I am a huge fan of this leotard!

I like the back. Crossover straps are almost always a yes for me. I really like the shade of blue and the gator skin sparkle piece on the chest is nice. Nothing blows me away about this but it’s a good, solid, championship fit.

Design 2.3/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

This isn’t the most exciting leotard I’ve ever seen, but it’s quietly good. There’s really not a single element I dislike, but as usual with Florida, I wish there was some orange incorporated. The gator-print sparkle pattern is a unique play on school spirit. I also like the way the mesh is placed on the arms, and the back is pretty. Good work, Florida!

Like Florida’s leotard from the semifinal, I liked this design well enough but wasn’t in love—until I learned the inspiration behind it. I think that goes such a long way for my feelings on a leo, and I think more teams should do that. The little bit of fabric giving shape to the upper half of the design is subtle but has a big impact. I also like the subtle faux ribbing on the body to create the corset design. Plus, the different-shaped rhinestones are a nice, unique touch.

Design 2.5/3, Fabric 0.9/1, Sparkle 1/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

I liked this even before I knew the backstory. Gorgeous shade of red, and the crystal work is outstanding. The only part I don’t like is the criss-cross back, but it’s not a major deduction.

Lela: 7.000

Design 2.5/3, Fabric 0.6/1, Sparkle 1/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.9/1, Overall Appearance 2.4/3

I love that this leo was inspired by Alicia Keys at the Super Bowl. And I love that it uses the differently-sized rhinestones—something we’ve seen a lot this year that I hope continues. I like that it’s a more subtle take on the corset (ahem, Clemson).  I don’t necessarily think Utah when I see a bright red leo, but I do love the story here and how it looked great in motion.

Izzi Baskin illustrated headshotIzzi: 5.800

Design 1.2/3, Fabric 1.0/1, Sparkle 1.0/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 1.0/1, Overall Appearance 0.8/3

I do give it to Utah for picking a design and going for it. Unfortunately, the execution is not there for me. The piping under the boobs looks so strange in motion, almost like it just doesn’t fit right? Seeing it in a nicely posed picture here really raises the rating for me, I can appreciate the concept better in a photo.

Aaron: 9.400

Design 2.9/3, Fabric 1/1, Sparkle 1/1, School Spirit 1/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 3/3

I love a good all-red leotard, and this one is nice! I love the broken glass look that the rhinestones give, and the bedazzled neck is stunning. I’m not the biggest fan of the mesh across the chest, but overall this is a solid leotard.

Katie Couldrey headshot newKatie: 8.200

Design 2.6/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 1/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.4/3

This does such a good job of mimicking its inspiration of Alicia Keys’ Super Bowl outfit, and it absolutely pulled off that corset design in a way the purple Clemson one didn’t. This looks like such a different leotard from far away as opposed to up close and it’s so unusual to have such big rhinestones, I think I’m a fan! I’m not sure about the line under the bust in the photos but this is a leotard that totally transforms in motion and I liked it way better when I saw it in action. A bold design that was a good fit for the occasion. I wish they’d worn this one on four on the floor but I understand wanting to make sure it had an outing!

Mariah Dawson illustrated headshotMariah: 6.400

Design 1.3/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.9/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 1.9/3

This is a much better attempt at a corset design than we saw from Clemson earlier this season, but I’m still not really a fan. I typically like the use of different sized rhinestones, but it looks a bit too chunky here for me, though I’m sure it really stood out in the arena. It’s certainly a bold design–and I like it a whole lot more than the one Utah wore for finals–but it’s just not a favorite for me.

Cal is slipping into leos that are all a bit too similar. They’re either navy with gold rhinestones or white with navy accents. I like this design fine, but it doesn’t make me say wow.

Illustrated headshot of Claire BillmanClaire B: 7.300

Design 2/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 1/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

The crystal colors and design are really cool even though it’s a variation on the theme that we’ve seen from several of their recent designs. The neckline is exquisite; I just wish the faux cutout wasn’t there.

Lela: 8.100

Design 2.5/3, Fabric 1/1, Sparkle 1/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.4/3

I adored this one in pictures and adored it glowing gold under the lights and in motion on the Cal gymnasts. Like the Bama leo, this one makes me think of a gorgeous gown. The back is stunning with the mesh and the lines of sparkle. It’s not screaming CAL, but I like that about them.

Izzi Baskin illustrated headshotIzzi: 7.300

Design 1.8/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.9/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

Cal always comes so close to a design I love. The concept and overall look is beautiful, but there’s just a little too much going on that isn’t executed well. The sparkles on Cal leos somehow always look slightly misaligned. The faux chest hole looks so clunky. I love the sparkle design on the back, but the zipper interrupts that too. Just a lot of little tenths that add up, as they say!

Aaron: 8.400

Design 2.5/3, Fabric 1/1, Sparkle 1/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.4/1, Overall Appearance 3/3

There is a lot going on on the top, but this is a gorgeous leotard. The sparkles are stunning and the mesh back is top notch.

Katie Couldrey headshot newKatie: 7.200

Design 2/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 1/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2.4/3

The neckline is almost perfect but I wish the cutout wasn’t there! The back is fantastic, but there’s just something about the front that doesn’t mesh to me. That being said, on TV the sparkles were insane and it looked wonderful!

Mariah Dawson illustrated headshotMariah: 6.900

Design 2.1/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2.1/3

I fear that Cal is entering into an era where a lot of its leotards look almost identical. As pretty as the sparkles are on the mesh back with the zipper, I think this is the third or fourth time I’ve seen that detail from Cal just in the last year. Regardless of it feeling a bit repetitive, this is a very pretty design and I love that gold stones were incorporated into the intricate sparkle pattern. I don’t love the random fabric at the center of the chest, though. I think it would’ve looked better with just a sweetheart neckline.

I love the ombre! LSU doesn’t do much yellow and purple, and I hope we see more in the future. I don’t love the shape of the opening in the black, but overall the leo looks good. It’s not a leo I’m obsessed with, but it’s a good one from LSU nevertheless.

Illustrated headshot of Claire BillmanClaire B: 8.300

Design 2.2/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.9/1, School Spirit 1/1, Uniqueness 1/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

I love the ombre, I love the sparkles, and I love the crawdad vibes. The piping on the stomach is a little too big for my taste, but this is a great design overall.

Lela: 7.700

Design 2.0/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.9/1, School Spirit 0.9/1, Uniqueness 0.9/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

Is this a fleur-de-lis? Or trying to be? I don’t love the belly mesh that’s cropped up a lot this season but I like the LSU-ness of this. The sparkles are great, too – I like that they are different sizes – and the gold trim is lovely.

Izzi Baskin illustrated headshotIzzi: 7.800

Design 1.9/3, Fabric 1.0/1, Sparkle 1.0/1, School Spirit 1.0/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.2/3

I hated this upon first glance, but after watching the meet and seeing it in motion, I really enjoy it. The purple-gold-black piping detail is gorgeous, almost luxe, which I think is what draws me to it. The ombre is also well executed.

Aaron: 5.900

Design 2/3, Fabric 0.5/1, Sparkle 0.61, School Spirit 0.3/1, Uniqueness 1/1, Overall Appearance 1.5/3

I do not love the colored center, and I’m not sure how well it blends in with the black. Overall, the leotard looks flattering on the gymnasts, but it is not my favorite design.

Katie Couldrey headshot newKatie: 8.700

Design 2.5/3, Fabric 0.9/1, Sparkle 1/1, School Spirit 0.9/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.6/3

I really like this one. Sometimes LSU leotards feel quite ‘heavy’ to look at but this one does a great job of looking sleek. It has a really great ombre execution which is always a winner for me and I like the shape of the line design on both sides. The LSU on the back has great placement and the level of sparkle is good. I don’t love that three quarter sleeve length but that’s my only gripe for an otherwise solid leotard.

Mariah Dawson illustrated headshotMariah: 6.100

Design 1.1/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.6/1, School Spirit 1/1, Uniqueness 1/1, Overall Appearance 1.7/3

I can’t really place exactly why, but I don’t really like this. The gold to purple ombre is interesting and not something LSU tends to incorporate and the design is certainly unique, but it’s a pass for me.

Design 2.4/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.4/3

There’s no one special element to this leo, but as a whole it’s really nice. I love the front and how the mesh overlays the crimson. I also like the way the front scoops down and the rhinestones mirror that scoop. A good one from Alabama that fits the occasion!

Illustrated headshot of Claire BillmanClaire B: 6.800

Design 2/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2/3

I absolutely love the mesh overlay on the bodice and the use of multicolor jewels. This is a very pretty leo, but nothing particularly memorable or distinctive.

Lela: 7.700

Design 2.3/3, Fabric 0.9/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

This one is really pretty; from the scooped necklace design of the waist to the gorgeous back – it’s giving ball gown vibes. I love all three fabrics used. I’m used to seeing Bama go all out, and this was a great use of restraint. Super classy for the big show.

Izzi Baskin illustrated headshotIzzi: 7.600

Design 2.1/3, Fabric 1.0/1, Sparkle 0.8/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

I love the color and black overlay concept, but the shape is off. The waistline, if you can call it that, is angled way too steeply, and it makes me think they ran out of black mesh and had to alter the design.

Aaron: 7.000

Design 2.5/3, Fabric 1/1, Sparkle 0.4/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.1/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

This leotard is elegant yet striking. It looks similar to past Alabama leotards, but it’s well designed and flattering on the gymnasts.

Katie Couldrey headshot newKatie: 7.800

Design 2.6/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.6/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.6/3

Wow this really feels like a leotard you contend for a national championship in! Although nothing grabs you immediately about it, I think that’s where its beauty lies. It feels like an elegant ball gown with the scooping mesh and rhinestones and I adore the open back.

Mariah Dawson illustrated headshotMariah: 7.300

Design 2.3/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.6/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.2/3

This is really elegant and definitely a different look for the Tide. I’m obsessed with the open back, and I appreciate the simplicity of the design. It’s nothing truly groundbreaking, but I think that’s part of what makes it great.

Design 2.6/3, Fabric 0.9/1, Sparkle 0.9/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.9/1, Overall Appearance 2.7/3

I love it! I’m all about a white moment, and the relatively simple concept of using only purple rhinestones to create the design is so nice. I don’t even mind the off-the-shoulder look or the rounded neckline, two elements I normally don’t care for. My only gripe is the off-center script Tigers on the collar; I wish it was maybe on the hip or back instead.

Illustrated headshot of Claire BillmanClaire B: 7.600

Design 2/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle .9/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 1/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

I feel like LSU gets a bonus point for breaking the White Leo Curse. The inverted scoop neck isn’t my favorite, but I really love the relative simplicity of this compared to most of LSU’s designs.

Lela: 6.700

Design 2.2/3, Fabric 0.5/1, Sparkle 0.5/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 1/1, Overall Appearance 2.0/3

It’s a bold choice that worked out for the Tigers. I admire the moxie, but I can’t get behind the white and the fact that the design on the front looks like a spine. Also, I’m going to pretend that KJ Johnson was behind the neck tat-looking Tigers placement there.

Izzi Baskin illustrated headshotIzzi: 6.600

Design 1.0/3, Fabric 1.0/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.7/1, Uniqueness 1.0/1, Overall Appearance 2.2/3

I really tried to like this one, but I just can’t. My favorite part (which really brings up this leo’s rating) is the script Tigers on the neck. It feels very athletic, almost baseball-y. But that’s really where the positive begins and ends. The arch shape makes it feel like the whole thing is saggy. After reading on Twitter that the sparkle pattern looked like a skeleton, it’s all I can see. I hope someone wears it for Halloween.

Aaron: 6.300

Design 2/3, Fabric 0.5/1, Sparkle 1/1, School Spirit 0.6/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 1.5/3

I’m not the biggest fan of all white leotards, and this one would fall into that category. I will say the sparkles on this are stunning, and the purple rhinestones mesh well with the white.

Katie Couldrey headshot newKatie: 8.200

Design 2.6/3, Fabric 0.8/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

I want to love it. I love white leotards but this one doesn’t blow me away. I like the off-the-shoulder mesh and the open back is stunning. Someone on Twitter said it looks like an X-ray and now I can’t unsee it, but I actually quite like it! The purple stoning on the arms looks like tiger stripes and now that they’ve won the national championship in it I like to imagine the leotard, with it’s skeletal image, embodies the phrase ‘ate it up and left no crumbs.’

Mariah Dawson illustrated headshotMariah: 7.100

Design 1.8/3, Fabric 0.9/1, Sparkle 0.9/1, School Spirit 0.5/1, Uniqueness 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.2/3

This is a very different design for LSU, and I have mixed feelings on it. I like the all-white look, the off-shoulder mesh design, and the open back. However, I’m still not quite sure how I feel about the mock neck, and I’m not the biggest fan of the rhinestone design either. I’m leaning toward liking it, but I’m not willing to commit yet.

I like it. It has so many subtle design elements, from the little vertical Oklahomas on the stripes to the small V cut on the neckline. It was also really sparkly in person that I could hardly see the pattern until looking at a picture of it. I also heard that Saturday’s leotard was going to be even more sparkly, and I’m pretty upset we didn’t get to see it.

This leotard has likely been ritually burned and the locker room saged to remove its essence. Like a lot of OU leotards, this one’s a bit of a Monet coupled with blinding sparkle. I won’t miss it and doubt they will either.

This one is super pretty and definitely one of my favorites of Oklahoma’s this season. The pattern is really intricate and I like that the leotard doesn’t try to do too much else, which is sometimes the case with an OU leo. I love the shape of the opening on the back and the placement of the rhinestone ‘Sooner’ lettering.

Mariah Dawson illustrated headshotMariah: 7.000

Design 2.0/3, Fabric 0.7/1, Sparkle 0.7/1, School Spirit 0.8/1, Uniqueness 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.1/3

This is a pretty toned-down look for the Sooners and I’m totally on board for that. The pattern is intricate and there’s a lot of sparkle, but none of the details compete with each other, which is a problem I often see with Oklahoma leotards. I don’t love how the pattern continues on to the underside of the arms, but that’s a small gripe. Overall, it’s a bit unremarkable for a meet as big as nationals, but it’s a solid addition to the leotard closet—even though we’ll probably never see it again.

I love the white, the maize and blue rhinestones, and the wrap design on the front. The back reminds me of toilet paper, though. It has a little too much going on and a bit too much fabric. Do a plain body with the chest the same, and I’m sold.

I will say this looked much better from the stands; it gave interesting textures when the gymnasts were in motion. In pictures and close up, all I can see is the macrame hangers I made for my aloe plants. Glad to see some yellow crystals in there, though!

If I saw this in a lineup, I’d accidentally frame Florida for murder. Michigan’s individuals pulled this one off admirably, but it did look like they’d been TP’d, and that’s a hard thing to look past.

I hate to say it, but Michigan’s leo quality has declined as steeply as their ranking. I used to love every new leo, but the last few years have felt so haphazardly designed. There’s just way too much going on here.

I am not a huge fan of white leotards, but the design is very unique and well done! If some more colors were incorporated into this leotard, I think it would stand out much more.

I love a white leo but this one misses the mark for me, it’s so ‘not Michigan’ my brain finds it difficult to process! I think the ‘boob sling’ can look great on the right leotard but there’s too much else going on in this one. I do really like the rhinestones but the lacing on the front is a no for me. I think if you removed that element from both the front and the lower back I would be a bigger fan as the lace-up back design is very pretty.

I typically like matte white leos, but I do not like this one. There’s way too many details and, in my opinion, none of them are executed well. A lot of it just looks like toilet paper to me. The blue and yellow rhinestones are a nice touch, though.
