The Dismount: Week 2

While it was another tumultuous week with cancellations and other COVID changes, the teams that did compete impressed. Michigan retained its No. 1 ranking thanks to a near-198 performance against Arizona State, while UCLA and Minnesota finally made their debuts. Catch up on those meets and more in this week’s Dismount.

Tear-Jerking Moment of the Weekend

Trinity Thomas and Nya Reed, Florida

Emotions were already running high during the first regular-season college gymnastics meet on ABC with Thomas earning a perfect 10 on vault to complete the Gym Slam earlier in the meet. But in the final rotation, the Gators came back to beat Alabama with the help of back-to-back perfect 10s from Reed and Thomas, giving us this pure-joy reaction.

Best Meet Day Shoes

Kiki Parenteau, Minnesota Volunteer Assistant Coach

More often than not, coaches dress to the nines for meet day. However, Parenteau’s show choice here is stylish and functional with her bedazzled Nikes. Now… Where can we get a pair?!

Whatever This Is

Apparently Minnesota has a yodeling gopher video at its home meets to hype up the crowd in between rotations? We’re not sure we understand, but we are also here for it.

Upset of the Week

Auburn, 197.250

In front of a record-breaking crowd at the first meet in Bud Walton Arena, Auburn held on to upset the host Arkansas Razorbacks by just 0.050. The freshmen were the stars of the show across the board with stunning performances from Sophia Groth, Sunisa Lee’s floor set and Leah Smith’s all-around debut. The Tigers’ beam team stepped up to the challenge, not counting a score below 9.825. Ultimately, Auburn just came up with too many sticks and solid floor landings to be denied the victory.

Under the Radar Performance

Brie Clark, Floor, 9.950

Clark has lived up to the hype as she enters week three ranked fifth in the country on floor. She combines huge tumbling, beautiful leaps and a touch of the running man to create a routine that is both fun and jaw dropping. Keep an eye on her in the coming weeks. She might just be the spark that Utah State needs to begin climbing up the team rankings.
