About Selena
As CGN’s top-rated gymnast in the class of 2022, Harris is an outstanding all arounder. She is the 2019 Nevada state and Region 1 champion, as well as a 2020 Nastia Liukin Cup qualifier. She qualified three times to L10 nationals (2016, 2017 and 2019). She was first on vault and third in the all around in 2017 (junior A) and second on vault and bars in 2019 (junior D).
What She Brings to UCLA
Vault
- Skill: Yurchenko 1.5
- Results: 2017 L10 national champion (junior A) and 2019 L10 national silver medalist (junior D)
- Margin of Improvement: Harris performs one of the best Yurchenko 1.5s in the class of 2022. She just lacks some amplitude in the air.
- Impact on the Team: The Bruins will want to replenish their lineup with 10.0 start-value vaults in the next few years, and Harris will certainly help with that. She could anchor vault from the very first meet of her freshman year.
Uneven Bars
- Skills: Ray, bail to handstand, double layout dismount
- Results: 2019 L10 national silver medalist (junior D)
- Margin of Improvement: Harris’ bar routine is NCAA ready.
- Impact on the Team: Harris will make an immediate difference to the lineup, especially given that UCLA will have to replace Margzetta Frazier and Norah Flatley on this event.
Balance Beam
- Skills: BHS + LOSO + BHS, switch leap to split leap to full turn with the leg held at 180 degrees, side aerial, side somi, front toss, transverse straddle jump half, 1.5 twist dismount
- Results: 2019 Nevada state champion
- Margin of Improvement: Harris’ current routine presents plenty of skills she can choose from to construct her collegiate routine. She can be a little wobbly at times, but beam coach Kristina Comforte will know which skills to use to minimize deductions.
- Impact on the Team: Harris’ beam skills have no built-in deductions, so she has the potential to score a 10.0 if she can keep her nerves at bay. Her dance series is unique and difficult—hopefully she will keep it in college.
Floor Exercise
- Skills: double pike, 1.5 twist to half twist to split jump, Memmel to illusion turn, double tuck
- Results: 2019 Nevada state champion
- Margin of Improvement: Harris may not consistently perform an E mount, but her execution is exceptional. The Bruins have recently learned to capitalize on good execution over difficulty to achieve big scores. Her musicality is also great and will fit fantastically in UCLA’s lineup.
- Impact on the Team: Harris has all the elements not only for making the lineup and posting big scores, but also for being next in line to go viral.
