About Amani

Herring is a 2019 Nastia Liukin Cup and level 10 nationals qualifier. She finished 10th in the all around at the NLC and 12th at nationals (junior D). Also in 2019, she tied for bronze on the balance beam at both the New Jersey state meet and Region 7 regionals. She scored career highs on vault, beam and floor in the shortened 2019-20 season.

What She Brings to Penn State

Vault

  • Skill: Yurchenko full
  • Results: fifth place at the 2019 Region 7 regionals
  • Margin of Improvement: Herring’s vault is solid, but she could perfect her form in the air. She is training a Yurchenko 1.5, which looks increasingly solid.
  • Impact on the Team: Herring’s Yurchenko full would not be a game changer at Penn State but would be in contention for a lineup spot. If her Yurchenko 1.5 is competitive by 2023, it’s another story—she could even anchor the lineup.

Uneven Bars

  • Skills: Gienger, bail to handstand, blind full to double tuck dismount
  • Results: 11th place at the 2019 Region 7 regionals
  • Margin of Improvement: Skill-wise, Herring’s routine is ready for college, but her execution still needs improvement. She is working hard on it, though, and has recently shown off a new routine in training (Gienger to bail, full-in dismount) that already looks much better.
  • Impact on the Team: Herring’s lineup debut will depend on how much she can improve her execution in the next two years. Her recent training videos look promising!

Balance Beam

  • Skills: Johnson, front toss to back tuck series, full turn, straddle jump three quarters, piked front toss, side somi, front tucked full twist dismount
  • Results: tied third place at the 2019 Region 7 regionals
  • Margin of Improvement: This is Herring’s best apparatus. Her routine is difficult and full of unusual elements, which will look good in college. The only question mark is her series, which seems a little unsteady.
  • Impact on the Team: Penn State will hope to have Herring compete regularly on beam.

Floor Exercise

  • Skills: double tuck, Rudi to straddle jump, 1.5 twist to front layout
  • Results: fifth place at the 2019 Region 7 regionals
  • Margin of Improvement: Herring may want to work on her landings a bit more, but her tumbling is solid, and she is training an impressive double Arabian. Her dance is also expressive.
  • Impact on the Team: Herring will be expected to contribute on floor. Her double Arabian would be an important addition to the lineup.
