Last Week in College Gym: June 25

During the offseason, it can be difficult to keep up with all the news and training updates happening across the teams. So each week, we will provide a curation of the most exciting upgrades, as well as other important news happening in the college gym world. Note the majority of the training updates highlighted will feature new skills and not someone training their same routine from the past season, for example.

Finally, note we are only able to share links to updates posted on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook and not Instagram Stories or Snapchat. However, we will try to note any clips of note that we see on those disappearing platforms.

Emily Schild Upgrades on Bars

Georgia sophomore Emily Schild trains a toe-on Tkatchev (Ray) on the uneven bars. Schild was able to make it back on bars last season after a preseason injury and looks to remain in the lineup with a clean upgrade.

Marissa Oakley Trains Beam Upgrades

Georgia sophomore Marissa Oakley trains a new beam series with a back handspring + layout stepout + layout stepout. Oakley was a star player on the balance beam last season with a career high of 9.950.

Rebekah Bean Trains a New Vault

BYU freshman Rebekah Bean is training a front handspring front to a mat stack. It’s a long way out, but it will be interesting to see if she can upgrade and give BYU a non-Yurchenko vault to mix up its lineup.

Instagram Story and Snapchat Roundup

Tristan Brown Trains New Bar Combination

Michigan State sophomore Tristan Brown shared a clear hip + blind combination on her Instagram Story. In 2017 she competed clear hip + Tkatchev, so perhaps she’s looking to change her single bar release to a Jaeger. Brown was frequently in the bar lineup during her freshman season and scored as high as 9.725.

Rachel Ley Trains Bar and Beam Upgrades

Rutgers sophomore Rachel Ley has been busy this offseason, showing upgrades on both beam and bars on her Instagram Story this week. On bars, she seems to be training the early stages of a Gebeshian mount (a hect with a full twist), and on beam she is training an Illusion turn. Ley only competed bars in 2018.

Carly Woodard Tumbles on Floor Again

Oklahoma sophomore Carly Woodard recently posted a video of herself training a double pike on floor on her Instagram story, remarking it was her first time in five months. The Sooner was presumably nursing some kind of injury throughout the 2018 season. We’re excited to see what she can do on floor.

Lexi Montgomery Trains Yurchenko 1.5

Minnesota sophomore Lexi Montgomery is training the very early stages of a Yurchenko 1.5, an upgrade from the full she competed last year.

Carson Cronin Trains Full-In

Minnesota freshman Carson Cronin posted a full-in on her Instagram Story. She’s working it into a pit for now, but the rotation is viable and would be an exciting addition to the Gophers’ floor rotation.

Torie Stotz Trains Deltchev

Illinois incoming freshman Torie Stotz posted a Deltchev on her Instagram Story. She competed a Tkatchev in J.O. but struggled with some inconsistencies on the skill. Perhaps a change will serve her well!
