The Sooners edged the Huskers Friday night in what was an off night for the team, especially on beam, with three falls on the event. Oklahoma remained strong on the other pieces but found it difficult to come back from the 48.150 in the third rotation, the Sooners’ lowest mark on the event in a decade. The team’s freshman phenom Anastasia Webb continued to shine, with two of her three events scoring 9.9 or better. She did not compete vault for the second week in a row after falling on her Omelianchik two weeks ago. The Huskers had a consistent meet all around, with all team scores within the range of 48.9 and 49.225, but it was not enough to capitalize on the Sooners’ mistakes. After a fall on both bars and floor, the team was forced to count a score in the 9.5s on both events. Sienna Crouse competed beam and stepped into the all around for the first time this season for the Huskers with a total of 39.550—just 0.05 off Maggie Nichols’ total.

Utah defeated UCLA in one of the more bizarre meets of the weekend. For Utah, the meet was highlighted by its four all arounders; Kari Lee, MaKenna Merrell-Giles, MyKayla Skinner and Missy Reinstadtler all hit four events for the team, and all but Reinstadtler scored over 39.5. A few of the Ute underclassmen had wobbly days, though—Sydney Soloski mistimed a punch into her front layout on floor, and Kim Tessen sat her Yurchenko 1.5 on vault. There were errors from stars as well, including an overly arched handstand on bars from Skinner and an awkward vault landing from Merrell-Giles. Overall, though, the Utes held steady and avoided having to count any error, which made the difference in the end. UCLA looked fallible starting on bars when Sonya Meraz fell on her Ray and Peng-Peng Lee uncharacteristically underotated her dismount, having to take a couple of awkward steps. But the difference came on floor: The Bruins and Utes came into the fourth rotation tied, and when three Bruins stepped out of bounds on tumbling passes, all the Utes needed to do was hold their nerve to bring home the W. An underrated highlight of the meet was Anna Glenn, who performed successful exhibitions on bars and beam, as well as anchored the vault lineup for UCLA.

Not only did LSU notch its highest score of the season, it became one of only four teams to score above a 198 in 2018. The Tigers had one of their strongest meets with consistent performances across all apparatuses. Sarah Finnegan and Myia Hambrick scored huge for LSU, with Finnegan winning the all around title, a score that placed her fourth in school history. Hambrick remained unstoppable on floor, notching yet another near-perfect 9.975. Noticeably missing from LSU’s lineup was freshman Sarah Edwards, who was pulled late for junior Julianna Cannamela. Mizzou and George Washington had similar nights, both overtaking a struggling Arkansas team that was forced to count multiple falls. Missouri posted season high event totals with the help of some key players on beam to start them off, including junior Britney Ward who had a memorable night with a 9.950 on beam and a 9.900 on vault. Though GW struggled on bars, sophomore Cydney Crasa saw action in two events, scoring big to keep the momentum going for a solid third place finish. The Razorbacks changed their lineup to add in sophomore Hailey Garner to the all around, joining sophomore Jessica Yamzon. However, it was senior Amanda Wellick who notched the most consistent scores for Arkansas with two 9.900s.

In its second meet of the weekend, LSU tested depth against Texas Woman’s where it notched its second 198 in a row. Vault and floor saw lineup shakeups for the Tigers, including Erin Macadaeg and Ruby Harrold on vault while Julianna Cannamela and Ashlyn Kirby saw action on floor. However, it was LSU’s bars rotation—one of two apparatuses where the lineups generally remained the same—that was the highlight of the meet. Harrold made her routine for a career high 9.950 while Lexie Priessman notched her own career high with a near perfect 9.975. The event total of 49.725 is the highest in program history and currently the highest total in the nation in 2018. The Pioneers struggled on bars after Schyler Jones fell but brought back its star power on floor, where Jones notched a 9.825 with beautiful landings. While LSU had an outstanding floor rotation, TWU had an equally impressive beam, with three scores above a 9.800 to bring it past a 194 final.

Although Georgia fell to Florida at home, the Gymdogs have a lot to celebrate. Junior Sydney Snead has been a consistent all around gymnast and leader for Georgia during its turnover period and the hard work paid off. Snead landed a perfect 10 on floor, the first perfect mark since 2016 and the first on floor since 2009. Snead’s 10 helped her tie for the all around title with Florida’s Alicia Boren. Former elite Emily Schild made her long-awaited debut on bars, but a fall on her dismount soured the event for Georgia, where they were forced to cound Schild’s 9.200 after a fall from Marissa Oakley earlier in the rotation. Florida introduced Alex McMurtry into the all around for the first time this season and came in second behind Boren and Snead. McMurtry’s floor earned her a 9.925 while she came close to another perfect score on bars.

N.C. State was on Michigan’s heels the entire meet and came close to passing the Wolverines, but multiple out of bound passes on floor slowed its momentum in the final rotation, eventually settling for a very close second. The Wolfpack started strong on vault and continued high caliber performances—beam being a highlight with senior Chelsea Knight notching a career high 9.950 on the event. NCSU was able to capitalize on Michigan’s early rotations, including a shaky floor start and needing to a count fall on bars. A lineup change put Emma McLean in the all around for the first time in her collegiate career, but she only managed a 6.200 on bars while Paige Zaziski had to count her 9.300. North Carolina struggled during its first rotation on bars where it was also forced to count Kaitlynn Hedelund’s fall. The Tar Heels were far behind coming into the second rotation but were able to recover quickly on floor, with Morgan Lane, Madison Nettles and Khazia Hislop all counting above 9.900. Brown also had a good competition with a solid score, beginning the meet by impressing on the balance beam with Regan Butchness’ 9.800.

Kentucky continued its mid-season struggles in a tough loss against Alabama while the Crimson Tide just missed breaking another 197 this season. The Wildcats took a loss against Georgia at home last week and were looking to get back into the swing of things away, but a less-than-average bars performance and rough floor rotation allowed the Tide to sneak into the winning position. Kentucky’s Mollie Korth and Alex Hyland remain the two most consistent all arounders for the Wildcats, coming in one-two against Alabama’s Kiana Winston and Lexi Graber. Kentucky finished on its strongest event, beam, with its highest total of the night, where Hyland saw a 9.925 for her 15th beam title in her collegiate career. Despite a win, it didn’t come easy for the Tide. In its first two rotations, Alabama saw a season high on the uneven bars with a 49.550. Sophomore Shea Mahoney received a career high 9.975 on the event while three other gymnasts followed her massive score with their own above 9.900. The momentum faded on beam where the Tide scored an uncharacteristic 48.850, counting two scores in the 9.600s but finished solid on floor with Nickie Guerrero winning a portion of the floor title.

After a rocky beam rotation in which two gymnasts fell and Diana Chesnok struggled with her leap series, the Pioneers failed to break 196 in an upset the Cougars won with a 196.625. BYU hit 24 for 24 and all but two of the team’s counting scores were above 9.8. The team didn’t have many individual standouts but rather put together an excellent team effort with solid, consistent routines. The only 9.900+ score for the team came from Shannon Hortman-Evans, who scored a 9.950 on floor for a routine that garnered a 10 from one judge to highlight the night. The Thunderbirds put together an almost completely hit meet to break 196 for just the second time this season, though the team was not left without adversity. The Thunderbirds, too, had a balance beam situation that left the team in a similar situation as Denver—the team had two falls and a lower-range hit score of a 9.625. In addition, McKenna Burnside, the team’s final vaulter went down with an injury and had to be carried off the mat. Denver started the meet on floor, an event the team has put up five gymnasts on. Until Friday, the team had fared well with just the five but on Friday had OOBs from both freshmen, Mia Sundstrom and Emily Glynn, which forced the team to count two scores in the 9.600s. Although the Pioneers did not put together their best meet, it wasn’t without highlights. Maddie Karr was a bright spot, recording a score of 9.900 or better on all four events, culminating with a 39.750 in the all around, just 0.025 shy of the program record set by Nina McGee in 2016.

- Dani Dessaints (OSU) was out of lineups nursing a knee injury.
|
This was a meet Arizona will want to forget as quickly as possible. On top of the season-ending injury to freshman Payton Bellows a week prior, the Wildcats were missing a few of their key gymnasts because of a one-week suspension for disciplinary reasons. As a result, they only put up two, yes two, gymnasts on vault and three on floor. They still were able to field six performers on bars and beam, though, and Victoria Ortiz competed her new uneven bars dismount, a full twisting double tuck. It was thus a walk in the park for the Beavers to take the victory. But they didn’t just add a tally to the win column. They registered a season-high score of 197.300 despite resting a few of their top athletes on some events. Dani Dessaints was out to rest a knee injury, and Sabrina Gill only competed on bars and beam.

The Huskies continued to improve and scored another 197, this time on the road, that will benefit them greatly once RQS kicks in next week. The whole team hit solid routines, but once again was led by senior Hailey Burleson who tied for the win in the all around with a 39.525. The Sun Devils also put up a much improved performance and their fourth 196+ score of the season, scoring above 49 on all four events for the third time. They were a bit depleted on vault following the lower leg injury to Nichelle Christopherson and unknown injury to Katelyn Lentz but managed to hit five solid vaults, which put them over he 49 mark. Freshman Cairo Leonard-Baker continued to be a rock, winning bars and tying for the floor and all around titles. Junior Anne Kuhm also had a great night and was right on Leonard-Baker’s heels in the all around with a 39.425.

Boise State puts another strong showing in the books with a face-off against conference rival Utah State, putting up its highest team total yet and inching closer to the elusive 197. Strong performances in the all around from both McGregor and Remme highlighted the Broncos’ effort, as did a standout floor routine from Alex Esmerian, who was the only other BSU gymnast to receive a 9.900+ score. Beam was the weakest rotation for the Broncos, with no one scoring higher than Sarah Means’ 9.85, though they did escape counting a fall. However, they came back strong on floor, with all counting scores at 9.875 or higher to close out the meet. Utah State had some trouble right out of the gate, as it only put up five on bars and was forced to count Madison Ward’s 8.85. Vault did not improve much, though it was able to drop the one fall. Floor was the Aggies’ best event of the evening as the team hit six for six, and beam finished out strong, dropping the one miss and earning freshman Autumn DeHarde the event title.
