The Dismount: Week 4 - College Gym News

More upsets, more big scores, as well as some not-so-great ones. It was an exciting and jam-packed weekend in the NCAA, and we’re here to recap it all for you.

No. 1 Oklahoma at No. 34 Iowa State

Freshman Maggie Nichols swept all events again this weekend as well as the all-around competition. Known for rarely changing the lineups once they are set, Oklahoma did surprise us at this meet by subbing senior Nicole Turner in on floor to replace sophomore Brenna Dowell. Turner handled her Sooner debut well, scoring a 9.750. Despite the loss, the Cyclones scored their season high and finally passed the 195 mark. They scored their season high scores as well on bars and floor, but unfortunately had to count a

fall on balance beam. Junior Haylee Young continues to lead this young team and placed second in the all-around right behind Nichols.

national dominance with another great performance in Lexington. The meet started smoothly for them on the uneven bars, but they had to face some difficulty when McKenna Kelley went down during vault warmups with a potential back injury. The Tigers had uncharacteristic mistakes on vault, but bounced back on floor and beam. Freshman Kennedi Edney was introduced to the floor lineup at the last minute, casually got a 9.925 and ended up winning the all-around. Junior Myia Hambrick had a rare fall on vault and a rough bars set but was able to get back to her usual self on beam and floor. The Wildcats had a bit of an off-night, especially after the performances we are now used to seeing from them and after the last few weeks of record-breaking. Yes, our expectations for you Kentucky have now changed! The Wildcats had trouble finding their landings on vault either landing short or low, and these carried over to the other events. A few breaks and wobbles on beam hampered the final score for Kentucky, and it never was able to get its momentum going.

No. 16 Auburn at No. 3 Florida

earned or tied their career- and season-bests, and Kennedy Baker capped off the night with her first perfect 10.0 of the season for her power-packed floor routine. Auburn started off the meet on a disastrous note, as Abby Milliet was injured on her vault landing in warmups. Despite having to change their lineups last minute, the Tigers came out with a season-high team score, including a pair of 9.9s from Emma Engler on beam and Emma Slappey on floor.

Though Utah came out with a big win once again,

and Skinner continued her dominant AA performance, the real story here is how the Utes’ depth is diminishing. They’ve now suffered their second season-ending injury, as Kim Tessen is out with an ACL tear. They’re still managing, obviously, as they still scored over 197, but some of the scoring was a bit generous, particularly on landings. Washington, on the other hand, looks to be getting itself in better RQS shape with each meet, with steady all arounders in Burleson and Goings and getting the previously-injured Evanni Roberson out on the competition floor for the first time, albeit in exhibition.

underwhelming, it was their third straight upset loss to Arkansas. In attempting to rest some gymnasts in preparation for their second meet this weekend, Winston and Guerrero were each only in one event apiece, while Armbrecht ended up in all four and Bresette made her debut on floor. These depth explorations did not work out very well for the Tide, particularly after the disastrous floor rotation that forced them to count a 9.125 from Desch. Arkansas, on the other hand, had a very clean meet, especially considering their depleted roster. Their beam rotation in particular allowed them to take the lead, counting four of five scores at 9.85.

At Bama’s second meet, their luck wasn’t really that much better. This time, it was bars that was their downfall, where they had to count two falls from Sims and Winston, 9.1 and 9.35 respectively. Winston, however, came back on beam and floor to redeem herself, with a 9.925

on the former and 9.95 on the latter. Desch came back from her floor fall at Arkansas to score 9.9 on floor here, and Sims came back from her bars fall to score a season-high 9.975. Auburn was leading pretty well until the final rotation. While Bama was counting three 9.9+ scores, the Tigers had to count two falls on beam from Katie Becker and Taylor Krippner. Emma Slappey did go 9.85 on beam, but it wasn’t enough to beat the powerhouse Tide on floor.

No. 6 Kentucky at No. 31 Ball State

Having to count a 9.4 and 9.6 from Sydney Waltz and Katie Stuart, respectively, was fairly out of character for the Wildcats, as bars has been one of their better rotations in recent weeks. weekend, as did beam. Korth led the way on vault with a 9.925, while Hyland won beam with a 9.9. Though she struggled on a few events, it was good to see Waltz back in competition, particularly with her 9.85 on vault. Ball State had been on a recent string of upset wins, but this ends that trend, as Kentucky was the heavy favorite here. They did have some bright spots though, including event wins from Beckler and Menzione. Beam, however, was their downfall, with all scores under 9.7, save Baylee Bell’s 9.85.

team, highlighted by Kirah Koshinski’s two near-perfect routines on vault and floor. But in the end, two falls on beam and only putting up five gymnasts on vault and floor hurt the Pioneers too much to come back from. West Virginia was waiting to capitalize on Denver’s state and did exactly that. Maddie Karr, Julia Ross and Nikole Addison, however, were the bright spots for Denver with Karr winning vault, Ross claiming the bars and beam titles and Addison finishing first on floor.

No. 8 UCLA at No. 17 Oregon State

the event and of her career (and probably not the last)! We all were so happy for her, and couldn’t contain our emotions either when she started tearing up. Ross had a fantastic night overall, also winning vault with a stuck Yurchenko full and performing a solid beam routine for a 9.850. Super senior Peng-Peng Lee is finally having the gymnastics season we have all been wishing for, and hit two fantastic sets on bars (9.950) and beam (9.925). The Beavers came yet again very close to the elusive 197 mark, but hit all 24 routines and went 49+ on all four events. Kaytianna McMillan and Maddie Gardiner continued putting up solid performances for their team, and sophomore Dani Dessaints showed her unique balance beam set and proved she was back and better than ever from her season-ending injury in 2016.

No. 9 Southern Utah at No. 24 N.C. State

around, vault and beam and Webb also sharing a part of the beam title. N.C. State kept pace with its previous team scores, tallying a number just under its season high. Beam was still a struggle but showed potential for the coming weeks.

No. 12 Nebraska at No. 10 Michigan

score was a 9.875 on bars from Sienna Crouse – which speaks very clearly to the gap between these two teams.
