Teams Take Time Away from Campus with Retreats

Updated 9/28/15

With last year’s senior leaders gone and new freshmen coming in, teams use the fall to bond together and learn more about each other before the real work begins and the season gets underway. With no competitions and only classwork and football games to take up time, many groups have taken advantage of the cooling weather and left campus for a couple days. From Park City, Utah to Sea Ranch, California, getaways aren’t too far from college campuses.
Utah
The Red Rocks took their annual retreat over Labor Day, renting a cabin in Park City and turning off electronics for a few days. From making a healthy dinner to completing a ropes course, the team took each challenge as it came and was stronger at the end of the weekend. The coaching staff also named its leaders for 2016 while on the retreat.

California
The Golden Bears traded in the Bay for the sea at their annual retreat to Sea Ranch, Calif. They might have been taking a break from school-life but the visit wasn’t a time to relax. While at the beach, the team got a workout in and practiced communication exercises with a view.

Stanford
The Cardinal also threw in a workout between its team-building exercises at its retreat at Lake Tahoe, Calif. From pulling a weighted rope to attempting standup paddle boarding (you’d think gymnasts would be good at that, right?), the team tried a variety of activities during its time north of Stanford.

Michigan
The Wolverines also took time away from the gym and schoolwork to work on leadership qualities within the team, talking about respect, accountability and cohesiveness among other things.

Every year the Bruins head to Woodward for a week-long training camp and retreat before the fall quarter begins. But it’s not all work and no play. Outside of training hard for the upcoming season, the team tried its hand at another sport — pool volleyball. Needless to say, most of the gymnasts are probably glad they stuck with gymnastics.

Meanwhile, the Beavers visited the Cascade Range and Clear Lake for some team building and communication exercises out on the water.

Arkansas
The Razorbacks took to the great outdoors for a camping trip on their annual retreat. Nothing like no electricity or civilization to bond a team and create camaraderie.

Arizona
After spending time as a team on the set of College Game Day for the Arizona vs. UCLA football game Saturday morning, the Wildcats left for their retreat. The group set out to bond while soaking in the great outdoors, making healthy meals as a team and hiking at Mt. Lemmon.
