Who’s ready for some Monday gymnastics? Tonight we get New Hampshire and UNC, a deviation from the typical Pac-12 Monday night meets.
I don’t know what I’m more excited for: the gymnastics, a Monday meet at a time I can actually watch or Christina Chauvernet commentary.
New Hampshire has steadily increased its score each week and nearly hit 196 last week. Freshman Kylie Gorgenyi did the all around at that meet for the first time in her collegiate career. The Wildcats shine on beam, where Alyssa Worthington has come into her own and Rylie Freehling has been a steady contributor.
North Carolina has had an inconsistent season, not helped by the loss of freshman Hallie Thompson. Bars has been a struggle for the Tar Heels, with freshman Elizabeth Culton being the exception. Khazia Hislop leads the way on three events, but watch for Mikayla Robinson on vault and floor as well.
This is the second of two meetings of these teams this weekend. On Saturday at N.C. State, UNC posted its second best score of the season at 194.600. The Tar Heels posted season bests on vault and floor, led by Khazia Hislop’s 9.925 and 9.95, respectively. Bars still wasn’t stellar for UNC, but it was one of its better rotations of the season and it only counted one fall. New Hampshire also had a hit meet, but it wasn’t its best meet. Still, it posted a season high on vault. Freshmen Kylie Gorgenyi (UNH) and Elizabeth Culton (UNC) tied in the all around; watch for them as they compete again tonight.
Live stats are here and the stream can be found here.
Rotation 1: UNC vault, UNH bars
struggling to get a feed up and running, but Jenna’s got me covered with some updates.
Culton VT: they didn’t show it on camera but it was a Y-full
Hampford UB: blind change to straddle Jaeger to bail, bail was maybe a little low. Can’t see handstands very well. Full pirouette to double back with a hop back.
Allen VT: Y-half with a small hop forward, pretty nice in the air. it didn’t get a lot of distance
Watkins UB: blind change to straddle Jaeger, a little short on next handstand and again on the last one. DLO with leg separation and some pike down but stuck.
Summery VT: Y-full with some pike down and a hop back. leg sep on block.
Freehling UB: blind change to piked Jaeger, short on next handstand. bail to handstand a little short but well controlled. DLO with a hop back, closed hips in the air but good otherwise.
Aldridge VT: a lot of leg separation on the block but really good in the air otherwise, lots of distance. fairly large hop back.
Lui UB: Maloney with some leg separation. again with the leg separation on the bail but good handstand. something funky going on in her pirouette and then lots of cowboying on the double back dismount with a large hop forward.
Robinson VT: great Y-full, maybe some slight pike down and a small hop back.
Cratchwell UB: pike Jaeger to a bail, some form issues. really short on last handstand. DLO piked with hop forward.
Hislop VT: usual yfull with a hop back. 9.85
Gorgenyi UB: maloney with leg separation but good bail handstand after. full pirouette to double back with a hop in place. 9.875
AFTER 1: UNC 49.150, UNH 48.900
Hopefully I can get a stream up and running, but from what I’ve been told it was a solid start for both teams.
Rotation 2: UNH VT, UNC UB
Freehling VT: Y-full, pretty nice in the air but lower amplitude and a hop back
Williams UB: straddled Jaeger with low amplitude, short handstand after, good bail. arched handstand on the high bar before a nice DLO, stuck.
Summery UB: short on first handstand. blind change to straddled Jaeger with flexed feet. a little short on the bail to handstand. late on the full pirouette but good double back, stuck.
Calandra VT: y-full that we didn’t see on the stream
Nam UB: blind change to straddled Jaeger, good bail. short on last handstand and on full pirouette. double back with a small hop. some form issues throughout routine.
Kelley VT: good y-full, not a ton of amplitude or distance with a step back
Donaghy UB: blind change to straddle jaeger, really pretty. good bail to handstand. DLO with leg separation and soft knees, a tiny hop.
Winer VT: stuck y-full! a little pike down and not a ton of distance but good form in the air.
culton UB: good bail handstand, well controlled. nice handstands. full pirouette to tkatchev. FTDT with a hop back. nice routine.
Gorgenyi VT: y-full, misses her hand a bit on the table and lands low, has to take several steps back to avoid the fall
Silverstein UB: short on first handstand. blind change to straddled Jaeger. hits feet on the ground after her bail. DLO with soft knees and leg separation, small hop.
AFTER 2: UNC 98.025, UNH 97.525
UNC hit bars! UNC on 196 pace! Let’s see if the Tar Heels can keep it up. UNH hasn’t had the best day so far, but beam is where they shine, so keep an eye out for the fourth rotation. Still having stream issues. Jenna coming in clutch.
Rotation 3: UNC BB, UNH FX
Summery BB: BHS LOSO solid. good leaps. cat leap to side somi. she has a pretty slow pace during the whole routine. RO 1.5 dismount, stuck.
Freehling FX: great double pike to open. back 1.5 to front layout, lands OOB and nearly loses her footing but saves it. double back with chest down a bit.
Allen BB: slight balance check on full turn but covers it well. BHS LOSO solid. front leg a little low on split leap. hitch kick to side aerial, nice. cartwheel to gainer full dismount with a slight slide.
Gorgenyi FX: double pike, clean. good leaps. i missed her second pass. front full to front tuck last pass, a little sloppy.
Culton BB: BHS LOSO floaty and solid. great leaps. front aerial with a bent knee. full turn finishes on releve. cat leap to switch side and she actually tries to do the right position on the cat leap! side aerial to back full with a small hop.
Lui FX: front double full, some soft knees but otherwise good. front layout to rudi, great. nice leaps, including a ring! i missed her last pass. 9.825
Hislop BB: front aerial with a balance check so she has to redo it. pauses before the back tuck on the second attempt but they’ll probably give her the connection. really pretty leaps. aerial to back full dismount, stuck. 9.8
Kelley FX: double pike, clean landing. leaps are short. back 1.5 to front pike, very nice. double tuck to finish, chest a little low but otherwise solid.
Nam BB: BHS LOSO with a small check. back leg a little low on first leap. cat leap to side aerial, solid. small check on full turn. RO 1.5 dismount with a tiny hop.
Watkins FX: nice combo pass to open with LOSO at the end. really nice leaps! back 1.5 to front half, some form issues in the air but good landing.
Donaghy BB: BHS LOSO with some knee bend. balance check after leap series and another one after the full turn. cat leap to side aerial with another check. gainer pike dismount with a tiny hop back.
Winer FX: great FTDT with a slightly awkward landing. back 1.5 to front full (?), nice. i’m having problems counting twists today. double back to close, solid. 9.875
AFTER 3: UNC 146.875, UNH 146.55
We’ve got a close (ish) one headed to the final rotation! UNC will have to knock it out of the park to get a 196, but it’s on pace for a great score nonetheless. UNH hit 49 for the first time this meet and will look to do the same on beam.
Rotation 4: UNH BB, UNC FX
The last rotation is brought to you by Claire! Big thanks to my fellow CGN editors for making this possible.
Freehling BB: a little tentative on bhs loso beat, but no wobbles. Cat leap to front toss to beat, lovely. Split leap to switch split, small correction. Round-off one and a half, stuck. Great start for New Hampshire. 9.8
Antinori FX: Punch front through to double back, great height and landing. I’m always a sucker for a shoulder roll. Wolf full, slightly off balance, but covers well. Switch full to wolf full, good. Very solid double pike. Love the Barani flop to finish. 9.8
Gorgenyi BB: Bhs loso; some soft legs, but very calm. Nice straddle half. Side aerial with a leg up and hip break, but fights through. Straddle jump to split 3/4 just a hair short. Punch full with a small hop. 9.5
Dean FX: Punch front through to double pike, some leg sep and bounce out of the landing, but nice. Lovely Popa series. One and a half to pike, bounced out but kept it in bounds. Nice double tuck to finish, just a little foot slide. 9.775
Worthington BB: Pretty straddle mount. Kicks out of the full turn, lovely. Side aerial bhs, excellent. Y scale on releve, yaaaas! Cat leap to switch side, good. Hitch kick to side aerial to a stuck-ish full. Beautiful routine! 9.875
Nam FX: Double pike with chest a little low, but solid landing. Punch Rudi, nice. Switch half to wolf full, well done. One and a half to front full, not quite as much control on the landing but overall a good routine. 9.75
Winer BB: Bhs loso with some soft legs, but really solid. Cat leap to front toss with a wave out of it, but saves it. Slight check on her full turn, another good cover. Switch split to split quarter, not quite at 180. Bhs one and a half, stuck. Strong finish.
Culton FX: HUGE double tuck to open. I really enjoy the precision of her dance, so extended. Switch ring to switch side, nice. Front lay to front full, well done. Front lay to Rudi with the tiniest foot adjustment but still solid. Awesome routine.
Kelley BB: Wow, gorgeous bhs loso loso. Switch split to straddle quarter, both a bit short. Front toss, great. Bhs to stuck one and a half. Lovely!
Robinson FX: Whip to huge double tuck, slight hip bend out of it. Fhs full front lay, looked a little off center (but could have been the camera). Massive switch side to Popa to straddle drop, excellent. Slightly short on the double pike, but pulls it out.
Lui BB: Leg up check on her bhs loso. Another small leg up after the full turn. Good side aerial. Slight check after her side somi, but covers well. LGreat position on the switch split and split jump. Strong finish with a stuck one and a half.
Hislop FX: Floaty front lay to Rudi, a bit of a shuffle on the landing. Switch ring to switch full, so dynamic! A little cowboyed on the double tuck, but great height and landing. Very nice. 9.9 is a tad high. It does get UNC to 196 though.
Neely BB exh: Bhs loso, excellent! Good aerial. Beat to back tuck, well done. Wolf to straddle quarter, solid. Overrotates her full turn, but covers well. Side aerial to full. A little off center, but stuck. Would be lineup ready on most teams.
FINAL: UNC 196.000, UNH 195.700
A 196 is huge for UNC and is a season high by a long shot. Great for the Tar Heels. A solid meet for UNH as well, and a score it’ll be happy to have. The EAGL is tight this year; every tenth counts and this meet exemplified the state of the conference.
