Ingle, Texas Woman’s Dominate Weekend
With just a single championship on the weekend, WCGNICs were automatically the “Meet of the Week”, but, thankfully, would have taken the award anyway thanks to the slew of standout performances on the weekend. Commanding outings from teams and individuals created an exciting four sessions of the weekend, with this the perfect momentum builder for individuals headed to NCAA regionals next weekend.
Gymnast of the Week
Taylor Ingle, SEMO
Following up her all-around title with wins on vault, beam, and a share of the top spot on bars, Ingle was the superstar of WCGNIC weekend. Ingle pushed SEMO to a runner-up finish as a team and qualified for every single event final, also claiming bronze on floor. Ingle’s dominance was undeniable as she gears up for an NCAA regionals run, qualified on vault thanks to a superb Yurchenko full.
Other contenders: Amara Nelson (Greenville), Caroline Bowns (Texas Woman’s), and Nicole Pujals (Bridgeport) for tying Ingle for the bars title
Performance of the Week
Texas Woman’s
While Ingle dominated the individual statistics, Texas Woman’s championed team stats over the weekend, taking home its second-straight WCGNIC championship title and setting new high-scores. In winning their prelim by over two and a half points, the Pioneers posted a huge 49.35 program record on bars under the pressure of having a miss to set the stage for their title. On championship day, Texas Woman’s won by over a point, showcasing its potential ahead of sending a trio of individuals to regionals.
Other contenders: Pioneer Kylie Minard taking home the floor title in just her third routine of the season
Outrageous Moment of the Week
Just a few years after the inception of the program, WCGNICs was the final meet for Fisk, as the school is no longer supporting women’s gymnastics. Thankfully, the Bulldogs finished on a high note, as Fisk was able to bring home some individual hardware with Aliyah Reed-Hammon snagging a share of bronze on beam and Allie Berkley finishing in a tie for runner-up on vault in event finals. A somber farewell to Fisk, the original HBCU gymnastics program!
Hidden Gem of the Week
Amara Nelson, Greenville
Amara Nelson has had a stand-out last few weeks, winning the all-around title at NCGAs, and, this weekend, setting three new records for Greenville. With a 38.975 all-around total, Nelson broke the all-around record, previously set by herself by 0.25 to end her season. With a 9.775 on vault and a big 9.875 on beam to break the records on these events as well, Nelson is certainly capping off her senior season strong.
Other contenders: West Chester leading team finals after rotation one Saturday night, Puljas giving Bridgeport its first national title since 2018
Viral Moment of the Week
Taking team spirit to the next level, SEMO finished off its training day look with tattoos of Head Coach Ashley Lawson’s face.
