Tracking Individual Nationals Qualification Scenarios

The road to NCAA nationals isn’t just about the teams—individual gymnasts are also vying for a chance to compete on the biggest stage. However, the qualification process for individuals is notoriously complicated, so we’re breaking it all down in real-time.

Throughout regionals weekend, we’ll update this live blog with the latest standings for individual qualifiers after each semifinal session and the regional final. We’ll track event leaders, potential tiebreaker scenarios, and how team advancement impacts which individuals move on.

A quick refresher on how individuals qualify:

  • The top all-arounder and top event specialist on each apparatus from non-advancing teams earn a spot at nationals.

  • Tiebreakers for the all-around go by the highest event score, then next highest, and so on. If there is still a tie, then all four judges’ scores on all events are counted.
  • Tiebreakers for individual events go first to the average of all four judges’ scores, then to the head judge’s score, and finally to NQS if needed.

  • All information below is unofficial until confirmed by the NCAA and/or regional organizers.

All qualifier scenarios are subject to change should any late scoring changes occur, but are based on the scores in Virtius at the end of the second semifinal.

Thursday, April 2

With today’s regionals semifinals, the individual nationals qualifiers picture will start to become clearer. After each semifinal, we’ll note where things stand on each event and in the all-around, and after each second semifinal, we’ll start to piece together various scenarios, depending on which regional finals teams ultimately advance to Fort Worth.

Baton Rouge Regional

Semifinal 1

After the second rotation, our individual leaders are:

Vault – Taralyn Nguyen (Stanford). Nyla Morabito (Utah State) wins the tie breaker against Isabella Minervini from Towson if Stanford advances as team.

Bars – Anna Roberts (Stanford), with Gwen Fink (North Carolina) as the next ranked athlete.

Beam – Carly Bauman (Michigan) and JoJo Valahovic (North Carolina) are tied, but Bauman wins the tiebreaker should Michigan not advance as a team.

Floor – Carly Bauman wins the three way tie with her teammates here. Individual Serena Mullin (New Hampshire) is next up so far.

After the third rotation, Reyna Guggino (Michigan) pulls ahead of Morabito for the vault spot if Stanford advances. Sydney Jelen (Utah State) wins the tie break against Gwen Fink for the bars spot if Stanford advances. Ana Barbosu (Stanford) and Sydney Seabrooks (North Carolina) both score 9.925s taking the top spots on beam and floor, respectively.

After the final rotation, the potential qualifiers are:

Semifinal 2

After the second rotation, LSU’s Kailin Chio and Konnor McClain are possibilities to qualify as individuals on vault and bars, respectively, should their team not qualify to nationals. McClain was one of three LSU Tigers to score 9.950 on bars, and the tiebreaker came down to NQS.

After the third rotation, Amari Drayton (LSU) enters the discussion for beam qualifiers (should LSU not advance to nationals) with a tiebreak win over teammate Kaliya Lincoln. Brie Clark is also a possible qualifier on floor after her clutch 9.950 to anchor the lineup.

After the final rotation, here are the projected qualifiers (depending which teams advance to nationals). Note that these are subject to change if there are any late score changes that come in.

Semifinal 1

After the second rotation, our individual leaders are:

Vault – Nyla Aquino (Georgia) followed by Niya Randolph (Southern Utah) if Georgia advances as a team.

Bars – Nikki Smith (Michigan State) has the top spot with Kelise Woolford (Georgia) winning the tie break against her teammates if Michigan State advances.

Beam – MaKayla Tucker (Michigan State) win the tie breaker over Isabella Trostel by NQS. Kylie Eaquinto (BYU) is next up if Michigan State advances.

Floor – Niya Randolph (Southern Utah) wins the tie breaker over her teammate Carilia Martinez and over individual Deana Sheremeta (George Washington). Sheremeta would get the spot if Southern Utah advances.

After the third rotation, Scarlett Sonnenberg (BYU) sneaks into the list of possible vault qualifiers if Georgia and Southern Utah advance to nationals, having won a tiebreaker over teammate Jorgensen, while Aquino and Randolph continue to lead all other scenarios. Niya Randolph (SUU) also slots into the bars qualification conversation, but only if both Georgia and MSU advance. Kelise Woolford (UGA) takes over as the favorite to qualify on beam out of the gymnasts who have competed so far (should Georgia not qualify to nationals), but some scenarios still exist for Tucker and Eaquinto. Similarly, Nikki Smith (MSU) is currently in position to qualify on floor if the Spartans do not advance to nationals, having won the tiebreaker over teammate Gabi Ortiz thanks to her higher NQS.

After the final rotation, the potential qualifiers are:

Semifinal 2

After the second rotation, Selena Harris-Miranda’s 9.975 on vault and Skye Blakely’s 10 on bars puts both into qualifying positions should Florida not advance. Tonya Paulsson (California) also moves into a potential qualifying position if both Florida and Michigan State advance to nationals. Abigayle Martin (Arizona) is currently the top score on beam and will qualify in all scenarios unless someone outscores her 9.925 in the second half of this meet. There have been no changes to the floor qualifiers so far this meet.

After the third rotation, Selena Harris-Miranda pulls ahead of Martin for the beam spot if Florida does not advance. CJ Keuneke from California also has a potential path to nationals at the moment if Georgia and Michigan State advance.

After the final rotation, here are the projected qualifiers (depending which teams advance to nationals). Note that these are subject to change if there are any late score changes that come in.

Beam – Maddie Komoroski for Maryland has the top score with a 9.875 at the moment. Olivia Kelly (Missouri) is next up if Maryland advances as a team.

Floor – Joscelyn Roberson (Arkansas) has the top spot at the moment. Abby Royer (SCSU) is next up if Arkansas advances as a team.

Semifinal 2

After the second rotation, Oklahoma has made its presence known, taking over the top spot on vault (Elizabeth Blessey) and bars (Ella Murphy). Emily Leese (Rutgers) is the current leader on vault assuming OU ends up making nationals. Delaynee Rodriguez (Kentucky) is now a possible qualifier on beam.

After the third rotation, Cam Smith (Ohio State) wins the tie break after four sticks in a row from her teammates to take the vault spot from Leese. Ella Murphy moves into a qualifying position for beam if OU does not advance. Creslyn Brose wins the tie break by NQS over Hannah Horton and has a good chance of qualifying now if Kentucky does not advance.

After the final rotation, here are the projected qualifiers (depending which teams advance to nationals). Note that these are subject to change if there are any late score changes that come in.

Corvallis Regional

Semifinal 1

After the second rotation, the current gymnasts in potential qualifying positions are:

Vault – Jamison Sears’s 9.875 for Alabama leads the way right now, but that score probably will not hold up through the rest of the day. Individual Charlie Behner from Kent State would be next up if Arkansas advances.

Bars – Azaraya Ra-Akbar (Alabama) after winning a tiebreak over her teammate Paityn Walker. Ashley Glynn (Utah) is next in line if Alabama were to advance to nationals.

Beam – Avery Neff of Utah has the top score with a 9.925 at the moment, with Ashley Gallen (Denver) currently in position behind her, though a 9.825 likely won’t be enough to advance by the end of the day.

Floor – Sophia Esposito (OSU) is leading the way right now with a 9.900, winning a tiebreaker over three others with that score. If OSU were to advance to nationals, Amelia Moneymaker (UC Davis) is next in line.

After the third rotation, Denver’s Shyla Bhatia takes over the top spot on vault with a 9.900. Taylor DeVries joins the 9.925 party on bars, though Ra-Akbar holds the tiebreaker if Alabama doesn’t advance to nationals. Neff continues to lead the way on beam, with Kylee Kvamme winning a three-way Alabama tiebreaker for the next position. Neff is also in the top spot on floor now.
