During the offseason, it can be difficult to keep up with all the news and training updates happening across the teams. So each week, we will provide a curation of the most exciting upgrades, as well as other important news happening in the college gym world. Note the majority of the training updates highlighted will feature new skills and not someone training their same routine from the past season, for example.
Finally, note we are only able to share links to updates posted on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook and not Instagram Stories or Snapchat. However, we will try to note any clips of note that we see on those disappearing platforms.
Auburn Holds Preview Meet
Auburn held its annual preview meet on Friday in Auburn Arena. Lineups for the meet (with only five competing on each event) consisted of all returners except freshman Derrian Gobourne, who competed in the all around. Her Yurchenko 1.5 brings the total 10.0 start vaults on the team to four, with sophomore Jada Glenn, sophomore Drew Watson and junior Gracie Day all bringing back the same vault for the meet. Also of note: Watson also returned to the all around, and sophomore Meredith Sylvia made her event debut in the uneven bars lineup.
Huskies Getting Ready for Purple and Gold Showcase
Junior Evanni Roberson showed a beautiful gainer full dismount off the side of the beam while fellow junior Michaela Nelson is working on her floor choreo. The Huskies’ Showcase is today, Monday, at 1 p.m. ET.
Morgan Hoang is Ready for NCAA Debut
Freshman Morgan Hoang showed off a floaty double layout on floor. She even acknowledged in a recent feature that it is her best skill.
Utes Vaulting on Hard Surface
The start of the season is fast approaching, so the Utes have started vaulting on a hard surface for the first time—and they looked solid. Sophomore Alexia Burch, seniors Kari Lee and Macey Roberts and freshman Cristal Isa all stuck their Yurchenko fulls while junior Missy Reinstadtler, freshman Cammy Hall and senior MaKenna Merrell-Giles showed off Yurchenko one and a halfs. Junior Mykayla Skinner stayed consistent with her double-twisting Yurchenko.
Darby Slater Upgrades Vault
Hamline’s Darby Slater is working on adding a half to her handspring front. Though it’s only onto a soft surface at this point, it definitely has potential to be a great lineup addition later this season.
Jaclyn Bertrand Swings Big
UW-Stout freshman Jaclyn Bertrand showed a beautiful double layout off bars this week.
Instagram Story and Snapchat Roundup
Upgrades for Kirsten Peterman
Maryland’s Kirsten Peterman teased a few upgrades throughout preseason, and she showed them onto competition surfaces this week. Look for the junior’s program to include a Yurchenko one and a half and a full-twisting double layout off bars this year.
Kendall Knaps Trains Double Arabian
Centenary freshman Kendall Knaps is reportedly working a double Arabian dismount on bars, and it is getting it close to competition surface.
Nia Dennis Looking to Upgrade Beam Dismount
UCLA sophomore Nia Dennis is working on a double twist dismount off beam. She was dismounting with a one and a half last season.
Shallon Olsen Shows a Double Double
In warmups for a mock competition held by Alabama, freshman Shallon Olsen threw her double-twisting double tuck on floor. The skill was in her floor routine as a Canadian elite. With Utah junior and former U.S. elite MyKayla Skinner being the only one competing the skill in the NCAA at the moment, it would be exciting to see another one make its competition debut.
Stephanie Mager Upgrades Floor
Brockport senior Stephanie Mager showed off a big full-in on floor at the Green and Gold exhibition this weekend.
Arizona Holds Showcase
Arizona posted highlights from its showcase on its Instagram Story. On vault, Maddi Leydin and Heather Swanson showed Yurchenko layout fulls while Adra Parks and MacKinzie Kane showed the same vault but in the tucked position. On bars, Leydin, Haylie Hendrickson and Danielle Spencer showed solid routines while Leydin, Sydney Freidin and Courtney Cowles looked confident on beam. On floor, we were treated to a sneak peak of choreography from Leydin, Spencer, Swanson and Christina Berg.
