Recruiting Roundup

Recruiting Roundup: February 28

Winter Cup and Nastia Liukin Cup were both held last weekend, and many college recruits had fantastic meets. With the next big level 10 meet not until state meets, focus turns a little bit to the elite side of things, where numerous college recruits were recently given international assignments.

News

Following Winter Cup, Jayla Hang (Florida, ‘26), Nola Matthews (UCLA, ‘25), and Ashlee Sullivan (Michigan, ‘25) were added to the National Team. Additionally, Sullivan, Hang, Simone Rose (Florida, ‘26), Matthews, and Zoey Molomo (UCLA, ‘26) all qualified to elite Nationals. For Molomo, this qualification was only for vault, beam, and floor.

In terms of international competitions, Hang will be competing at the Antalya World Cup, and Matthews, Rose, and Sullivan will be competing at the DTB Pokal Mixed Cup. Charlotte Booth (Auburn, ‘25) competed at the Cottbus World Cup for British Gymnastics, winning silver on bars but suffering an injury during floor finals.

Meet Results

Kentucky Winter Classic, Kentucky

The second-to-last Nastia Liukin Cup Invitational was in fact won by a Kentucky commit, Gabriella Van Frayen (‘25), who also won the beam title with a career-high 9.900. Second place went to Shyla Bhatia (Denver, ‘25), and third place went to Madelyn Dorbin (Florida, ‘25), who unfortunately struggled a little on what is often her best event, floor, costing her the qualification. Jazlyn Jackson (‘26) tied her bars career high from the week before with a 9.900, earning her the bars title. Isabella Beach (‘26) won the floor title and came second on beam.

WOGA Classic, Texas

Morgan Reihl (Cal, ‘26) won this final Nastia Liukin Cup invitational and flew to Kentucky with very little turnaround time before the competition. Reingold sisters Autumn (Georgia, ‘25) and Brooke (‘27) tied for the bars title, which was reminiscent of them both winning national bars titles last year. Another Cal commit, Quincy Walters (‘25), won the floor title.

Nastia Liukin Cup, Kentucky

After weeks of tracking invitationals and qualifiers, the Nastia Liukin Cup finally arrived and was worth the wait. At her fifth Nastia Liukin Cup, the top recruit of the class of 2025, Mackenzie Estep (Oklahoma), won the all-around for the first time. The smallest possible margin behind her was Jasmine Cawley (Alabama, ‘25), and the podium was rounded out with Cameron Tassone (UCLA, ‘26). Estep also won the vault title with a stuck Yurchenko one and a half. Sophie Schriever (Iowa, ‘25) won the bars title with a unique front pike half dismount. Ella Murphy (Oklahoma, ’25) and Gabriella Van Frayen (Kentucky, ‘25) tied for the beam title with a 9.900, which meant that Van Frayen tied her career high on the event from the same weekend. Murphy’s routine included a triple series consisting of a back handspring to two layout stepouts, while Van Frayen’s had a back handspring to Onodi series. Another Kentucky commit, Ariana Frechette (‘26), won the floor title with a full-twisting double tuck opening pass. In true Nastia Liukin Cup fashion, there was a tie for the junior all-around title, which was shared between Elizaveta Grebenkova (‘27) and Caylee Cain (‘28).

After nearly deciding to compete level 10 this season, Ashlee Sullivan (Michigan, ‘25) had a fantastic meet and came away with the all around title.
