LIVE BLOG: No. 5 Florida at No. 1 Oklahoma

Brace yourselves—this one’s going to be a showdown.

Oklahoma returns to the Lloyd Noble Center with something to prove after last week’s loss at LSU. Head coach KJ Kindler has been rolling out a five all-arounder strategy—calling it a “one-year anomaly” in media availability this week—with Jordan Bowers and Faith Torrez leading the charge. Though it’s a double meet weekend for the Sooners, expect Kindler to stack this lineup with her best six routines, eyeing a crucial SEC win. Oklahoma will also be pushing to become the third team to hit 198 this season—a mark they reached in just three meets last year.

Florida, however, has consistently outscored the Sooners this season and racked up more perfect 10s. Leanne Wong remains a steady force, while transfer Selena Harris-Miranda has quickly become a lineup mainstay. To pull off the upset on Oklahoma’s home floor, the Gators need to bring their absolute best—something they lacked in their last regular-season faceoff with the Sooners. The key event? Beam. Florida typically lands in the mid-49s, but a stumble in Fayetteville a few weeks ago proved costly. Another misstep here could close the door on their upset hopes.

Yessss Oklahoma is wearing my favorite nude leotard, I’m already obsessed.

Rotation 1: OU vault, UF bars

Pederson (OU): Yurchenko 1.5, big block off the table, sizable step forward on the landing. 9.850

Pilgrim (UF): Pak salto to low bar, good leg form in the transition, went for the Van Leeuwen and peels off the bar. Looked to hit her head pretty hard, hopefully she’s okay. 🙁 looks like she’s going to give it a go to finish, tucked full-in with a stick. Bc of course. We’ll see if this impacts her doing other events later on. 8.975

Torrez (OU): Yurchenko 1.5, got a LOT of height, good straight arms on the block, small hop forward on the landing. 9.950

McCusker (UF): Maloney to Pak combination, beautiful form on the Pak salto, Van Leeuwen back up to the high bar, so glad she didn’t let Pilgrim’s fall rattle her! Stalder to double tuck dismount with a small hop forward. 9.850

Wells (OU): Yurchenko 1.5, lot of height, lot of distance, on the rewatch, she did have some loose knees but got a good landing. Interested to see the score there. 9.925

Draser (UF): Maloney to Pak, tiny separation at the ankles, good final cast handstand, double layout dismount, some leg separation and a low chest. Hop on the landing. 9.750

Bowers (OU): Yurchenko 1.5, good form in the air, lot of distance, smallest step forward on the landing. Good vault for Bowers!

Sk. Blakely (UF): Good first release, nice toe point, to immediate Pak, kept her legs together, Handstands right on top of the bar, double front half dismount STUCK. Good comeback after a fall last week.

Mueller (OU): Yurchenko 1.5, good distance off of the table, small step forward on the landing. The form is there, but the landings haven’t been.

Wong (UF): Maloney to Pak combination, her positions in the air are just gorgeous. Van Leeuwen up to the high bar, double layout stick. Didn’t get the 10 last week, but could we see it here?

Davis (OU): Yurchenko 1.5, stutter step forward on the landing. Great height and distance off the table. Needing to drop a 9.850. 9.800, so Davis’s score becomes the drop.

Harris-Miranda (UF): A hit drops Pilgrim’s score. Ray release, nice toe point in the air. Bail to handstand, nice crisp handstand position on the low bar. Toe-on to immediate double layout dismount, stuck! Gators drop the 8.975 from Pilgrim.

After 1: OU 49.475, UF 49.275

After a scary start to the meet, Florida rallied with five straight hits to keep it within two tenths of the Sooners. Oklahoma got six hits on vault, but again struggled with sticking the vaults. Good technique and form kept them in the high 9.8s and 9.9 range, but to keep that lead, the Sooners need to get back to their trademark sticks.

Rotation 2: UF vault, OU bars

Injury update: Pilgirm is doubtful to return after a fall on bars.

Lazzari (UF): Yurchenko 1.5, hop forward on the landing, good form off of the table. Got to be a little unsettling after Pilgrim being taken out. 9.800

Sievers (OU): Maloney to Pak combination, half pirouette, might’ve come out of it a second too soon, half in half out, had the stick but took a tiny step in place. 9.800

Bui (UF): Yurchenko 1.5, good distance, underrotated and took a step back on the landing. 9.725

Pederson (OU): Maloney to Pak, nice straight arms on the catch on the low bar, good final handstand, double layout dismount, small step backward on the landing. 9.825

Ferris (UF): Yurchenko 1.5, lot of distance off the table, hop forward on the landing. Neither team really finding their sticks on vault. 9.875

Fatta (OU): First appearance for the freshman tonight. Church release was good, some bent arms, little short on the handstand afterwards, Pak salto swing looked really big, DLO dismount, small step. 9.875

Wong (UF): Her usual Podko vault, tiny foot movement on the landing. Much needed vault for the Gators, should be the high score. 9.900

Torrez (OU): Ray release, beautiful handstands on the high bar, Pak was good, back up to high, double layout dismount with a stick. First stick on bars for the Sooners. 9.900

Disidore (UF): Yurchenko 1.5, good block off of the table, lots of distance, step forward on the landing. 9.875

Davis (OU): Will sticks be contagious? Higgins to piked Jaeger, super high above the bar, Pak was very pretty, another Higgins to double front half. I didn’t like the form on the dismount, it was a little weirdly positioned, but got the stick. We’ll see what happens.

Harris-Miranda (UF): Yurchenko 1.5, best twisting vault of the lineup. The tiniest foot adjustment on the landing, but a great way to end the lineup. 9.925

I hear boos. Davis with a 9.900.

Bowers (OU): Pretty first handstand, blind to piked Jaeger, nice striaght arms on the catch. Pak salto to low bar was good, half in half out dismount with a small bend forward and a stick. 9.925

After 2: OU 98.900, UF 98.650

Oklahoma extends its lead and found a few more landings on bars than they did on vault. Florida is having to rally after the injury to Pilgrim, but heads to floor where it will need a big rotation to cut into the Sooners’ lead.

Rotation 3: OU beam, UF floor

Davis (OU): Full turn to open, pretty. BHS LOSO series looked good, front aerial to immediate choreography, the split ring leap was gorgeous! Double twist dismount, opened up perfectly to get the stick. 9.850

Nguyen (UF): front double full to immediate sissone, good combination to get her bonus! Split ring to switch half, good extension in the leaps. Back 1.5 to front layout to close. Good start for the Gators! 9.875

Fatta (OU): BHS LOSO, small adjustment after the series. Side aerial, bit of a stutter step but covered it well. Hitch kick to switch side, full turn was good. Switch leap to split jump, small balance check after the switch. BHS gainer full dismount, 9.875

Ferris (UF): Tucked full-in, would’ve liked to see the chest position a little higher, but good control on the landing. Good extension on the leap series. Back 1.5 to front layout, lacked a little rise between the skills, but 2/2! 9.875

Pederson (OU): Good rotation on the full turn, BHS LOSO, slight lean at the end, turned her hips to try to save it. Hitch kick to switch side, good recovery. Side somi, wow she’s really doing well after that opening balance check. Double twist, stuck.

Clark (UF): Double layout, got that around very quickly, right foot lifted with a step back. I do enjoy this choreography though. Nice rotation on the leap series! Front tuck through to double tuck, much cleaner landing. Florida making a push. 9.775

Bowers (OU): Friendly reminder she’s a beam 10 away from a gym slam. BHS swingdown to open is different, but I like it! Full turn, BHS LOSO, small adjustment and arm swing after the landing. Sissone to switch half, maybe a touch below 180? RO double twist dismount with a stick.

Sl. Blakely (UF): Tucked full-in to open…and she’s down. She’s able to get up and hop off the floor, but not what Florida needed at all. The 9.775 will now count since Blakely didn’t finish. 6.350

Wells (OU): Side aerial to two feet, very difficult but does it well. Switch leap switch leap series, connection was good. BHS LOSO, tiny adjustment on the landing, 1.5 twist dismount with a hop forward.

Wong (UF): Tough to follow an injury, but if anyone can do it, it’s Wong. Double layout to open, dances out of it to hide being a little out of control. Front layout front full last pass, good rise between skills. Good comeback after Blakely’s injury, 9.925

Torrez (OU): Wolf jump to open, beautiful toe point! Side aerial layout, small lean to the side. Switch leap straddle jump, nice connection. BHS gainer full dismount with a stick.

Harris-Miranda (UF): Front tuck through to double tuck, nice control on the landing. Switch side straddle half, positions in the air were good. Combination pass was very nicely done. They will drop Blakely’s score, but did they manage to make up any ground?

After 3: OU 148.300, UF 148.000

Tough scenes unfolding in the Lloyd Noble Center as Florida is now down two athletes to injury. Kudos to the Gators for pushing through and fighting back. Oklahoma’s beam wasn’t as clean as we normally see it, but it carries a three-tenth lead into the final rotation.

Rotation 4: UF beam, OU floor

Draser (UF): BHS LOSO to open, switch leap switch half, lacked some split in the switch half. Good control on the full turn. RO 1.5 twist with a stick. Great start to the rotation. 9.825

Blakely just re-entered the floor on crutches and in a boot.

Davis (OU): Front double full to immediate kick out of it to open, nice control and dance out of it. Nice toe point on the leap series! Back 1.5 to front full, she’s having fun with this choreography! Good end to her AA day! 9.925

Nguyen (UF): Onodi BHS series, nice connection, she has struggled with it in the past. Switch leap split jump, nice 180 position. BHS 1.5 twist, stick. 2/2 so far. 9.875

Pederson (OU): 1.5 through to 2.5 twist, WOW, that’s a fun pass! FHS front double full as her second pass, normally that’s an opening so having that as her second pass is very difficult but she nailed it. Switch side straddle full leap series closes it out. 9.925

Wong (UF): She had a 10 on this event last weekend, let’s see if she can match it. Leap series was gorgeous, front aerial to split jump, nice toe point! BHS LOSO series, very nicely done. Tucked gainer full off the end, small hop backwards. Likely won’t be a 10, but still a beautiful routine. 9.875

Mueller (OU): TIL her last name is pronounced MILL-er, not MULE-er. Front tuck through to double tuck, lots of control on that landing. Front layout front 1.5, nice control on that combination. She is super into this routine and I am a fan.

Harris-Miranda (UF): BHS LOSO BHS, had some struggles last away meet but did it well this time. Front toss, had to FIGHT to keep that on the beam. RO 1.5 twist dismount with a solid landing.

Fatta (OU): Follows a 9.950 from Mueller. Front double twist into stag jump, nice control on that jump. Front tuck through to 2.5 twist, good. Switch leap followed by switch side straddle full leap series. Sooners are feeling it on floor.

Bui (UF): One of the two sub-ins after Pilgrim and Blakely’s injuries. Falls almost right away on a dance element. Gets back on track with the leap series, beautiful split position. BHS LOSO, way to get back after a fall. Small lean forward after a leap. BHS 1.5 dismount with a hop forward. 9.250

Sooners on track for a really high score on floor here, nothing below a 9.900.

Bowers (OU): FHS double twist to punch front, opens out of that punch front beautifully. Double pike 2nd pass, slight slide back of the front foot, but nicely controlled on the lunge back. Switch leap into her series, beautiful extension on those leaps. Ends it with a bow. Absolutely stunning. 9.975

McCusker (UF): Needing to drop Bui’s 9.250 with a hit here. Double wolf turn to open, beautifully done. BHS LOSO, off on the layout and comes off. Florida will count a fall. Switch leap split jump series looked good, gainer full dismount with a stick.

Oklahoma at a 198 with one routine to go.

Torrez (OU): Double layout to open, very well done! I’ve always loved her musicality on this event. Great height and extension on her leap series! Front tuck through to double tuck to end it. If Bowers was a 9.975 with a foot slide, that should be the first OU ten of the season. And it is! Torrez with a 10 to end the meet!

FINAL: OU 198.075, UF 196.625

Oklahoma gets its first 198 of the season AND its first 10.000 from Faith Torrez, while Florida battles through two injuries to get a respectable score on the road. The Sooners will get ready for its second meet of the weekend at Metroplex on Sunday, while Florida heads home and hopes Pilgirm and Blakely’s injuries aren’t as serious as they appeared. What a Friday night.

VT: Torrez (OU) – 9.950

BB: Torrez (OU) – 9.925
FX: Torrez (OU) – 10.000
