Georgia announced today, April 19, that Courtney Kupets-Carter will not return as head coach.
The decorated Gymdog alumna took over the program in 2017 and led it to a No. 18 finish this season, headlined by Lily Smith’s individual nationals appearance in the all-around. Georgia hasn’t finished higher than seventh under her tenure.
“We want to thank Courtney for her leadership of our gymnastics program over the past seven seasons,” Georgia athletics director Josh Brooks said. “These are always difficult decisions, but this one was especially tough because of what Courtney and her family mean to the University of Georgia. She is among the greatest Bulldog student-athletes of all time, and her many accomplishments and accolades will be remembered for years to come. At this time, we feel it is in the best interest of our gymnastics program to make a change in leadership as we pursue SEC and national championships.”
The program accepts nothing short of excellence and has cycled through three head coaches since Suzanne Yoculan Leeburn’s retirement in 2009: Jay Clark, Danna Durante, and now Kupets-Carter.
A national search for Georgia’s next head coach will begin immediately.
This is a developing story. This post will be updated as we learn more.
