The Iowa State Athletics Department has announced that the remainder of the gymnastics team’s season has been canceled.
Stating that the health and safety of the student-athletes is of utmost importance, Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student Services Shamaree Brown shared, “After a careful and thoughtful review of the program over the last week, it became apparent that we do not have enough student-athletes available to safely compete, and thus have made the painful decision to cancel the remainder of our gymnastics season.”
This decision comes after Iowa State canceled its meet against West Virginia this past weekend. Prior to the cancelation, the Cyclones were 2-8 on the season, with notable losses to Missouri, Illinois, and Iowa. Their remaining scheduled meets included those against Western Michigan (Feb. 13), Arizona State (Feb. 22), Arizona (Feb. 27), BYU (March 6), and Iowa (March 13). The Cyclones were also expected to make an appearance at the Big 12 Championships in March.
The Cyclones are led by Head Coach Ashley Miles Greig, a former standout at Alabama and the 2006 Honda Award winner who is in her third season at the helm of the team.
The athletic department stated that season ticket holders or fans who have already purchased tickets to these future meets will receive information on refunds from the ISU Ticket Office later this week.
