Ciena Alipio UCLA

LIVE BLOG: No. 37 Washington at No. 5 UCLA

No. 5 UCLA welcomes No. 37 Washington to Pauley Pavilion for a West Coast Big Ten showdown.

UCLA is coming off a win over Michigan State that featured several lineup shakeups due to illness—and still produced a season-high 197.425. Jordan Chiles led the way in dominant fashion, sweeping all four events and posting a nation-leading 39.875 all-around that included a perfect 10.000 on floor. The meet also highlighted the Bruins’ depth: Ciena Alipio earned her fourth 9.900-plus of the season on beam and made her bars debut, while freshmen Jordis Eichman and Ashlee Sullivan debuted on beam (Eichman also on vault). Sydney Barros capped the night with a 9.900 in her floor debut.

Washington enters after recording its second-highest score of the season in a 195.225 conference win over Rutgers. Kristin Lin led the Huskies with career highs of 9.900 on floor and a 39.225 in the all-around, while Lilly Tubbs claimed the bars title with a 9.900 and matched her beam career high with a 9.875. Floor was a standout for Washington, as the Huskies posted a season-best 49.225 on the event.

AFTER ONE: UCLA (49.425), UW (49.275)

What a start to the rotation on bars for Washington! This is the first score above 49.000 this season on the event for the team and they beat that by a lot! Lots of stuck landings and a 9.900 from McDonough is most certainly what they wanted to stay close after the first rotation. UCLA had four 10.000 start value vaults and other than a few hops, did great on the event for a small lead after one.

Rotation 2: Washington VT, UCLA UB

McWilliams (UW): Y Full, needed a little more pop off the table and height. A bit off on the shoulder angle resulting in a small hop. 9.750.

Alipio (UCLA): Maloney to overshoot, lands right in a handstand. Blind full to toe-on front tucked half to a big stick! 9.950.

Tubbs (UW): Y Full, a bit of bent arms, a little low on the landing but gets the stick. 9.725.

Barros (UCLA): Big Pak, Van Leeuwen, with great form, double layout is really stretched and nails it for a stuck landing! 9.925.

Lin (UW): Y Full, with good height and distance, but a little hop back. 9.825.

Sumanasekera (UCLA): Unique straight body casts into a Chow, beautiful handstands to a high full-in and has to fight for the landing. 9.825.

Schaffer (UW): Y Full, a little shoulder angle off the table but flairs it, and a large hop back. 9.675.

Matthews (UCLA): Fluid Pak to Van Leeuwen, nails her handstands on top, and kind of tries to “college” stick the landing and then steps back. 9.800

Bolden (UW): Y Full, lots of amplitude, hops in place. 9.850

Sullivan (UCLA): Tkatchev, legs glued together on the pak, love her hit handstands on top, double lay is solid. 9.875.

McDonough (UW): Y Full, good body position, a bit of a hop on the landing. 9.775.

Chiles (UCLA): Piked Tkatchev to Pak, nice form, DLO with a stuck landing! 9.975!

UCLA had quite the rotation with Ciena Alipio putting up a 9.950 and Sydney Barros earning a 9.925, both career highs. Jordan Chiles won the event with a 9.975 with one judge giving her a 10. The Huskies put up some solid vaults even without any Y 1.5’s. They still have a great score halfway through the meet with a 98.20. The Bruins are trending to possibly their first 198.000.

Rotation 3: UCLA BB, Washington FX

Rosen (UCLA): Switch leap to split jump, a little low on the back leg. Beat jump to Onodi, a little wobble but covers it well. BHS LOSO, squares her hips to hit the series. RO 1.5, her shoulders were a little over her feet, resulting in a little hop. 9.850.

Eichman (UCLA): BHS LOSO, beautifully done. Cat leap to side somi, rock solid. Beat jump to switch half is steady. Front tucked full off the end to a stick! 9.875.

Lin (UW): FHS to a front double full is really good in the air. RO 1.5, to front layout really has to fight with her toes on the landing. Great extension in her leaps through her back and pointed toes. This dance is really getting her team fired up! FHS Rudi is solid. 9.875.

Sumanasekera (UCLA): BHS LOSO is so elegant. Front aerial to switch side has a little wobble. BHS 1.5 is underrrotated and has a hop back and has to save it. 9.800.

McWilliams (UW): Rudi to back layout is off center and manages to keep it in bounds. Nice 180 degree splits. Double pike to a slight bobble on the landing. 9.875.

McDonough (UW): FHS Rudi to LOSO with a slight balance check, makes it work though. FHS front double full, a little off on the landing but finesses it. 9.900.

Alipio (UCLA): BHS BHS LOSO, snaps her arms down to avoid any wobbles. Switch leap, switch leap, to beat jump is right on. Front tucked full off the end lands with her chest up and the team is calling for the 10! 9.950

Navarro (UW): Double tuck to open is solid with a controlled lunge. RO 1.5, to front layout, legs buckle a bit and saves the landing. Underrotated double pike and puts her hand down. They will drop this score. 8.850

A pair of 9.950’s for the Bruins with Chiles and Alipio and a career high 9.875 for Eichman. Mary McDonough, continues her strong meet with a 9.900 for the Huskies on floor and Caitlin McWilliams delivered a career high 9.875. The Huskies matched their season high with a 49.275 and are trending towards a solid away meet score. The Bruins need a 49.550 on floor for a 198.000.

Rotation 4: Washington BB, UCLA FX

Oppegard (UW): BHS LOSO, is off center and comes off the beam. Swich leap, switch half is great. Aeriel is very low, shoulder are off to the side and has to really fight with her toes. Gainer full to a small hop. 8.975.

Tubbs (UW): Front aeriel has a bobble which is a missed connection. BHS LOSO series and nails it. Liukin is so controlled. Piked Gainer to a stick! Veteran move to do a backup series and continue the routine cleanly. 9.850

Sullivan (UCLA): Double Layout is high and open. Front through to double tuck and finds the landing. 9.950.

Hallinan (UW): Front toss to back tuck and there is no movement whatsoever. Aggressive jump combination. RO 1.5 with a slight shuffle back. 9.875.

Chiles (UCLA): Double layout is high and is close to the out of bounds line but keeps it in. High leap combination and now we dance! Signature dive roll is amazing. Front through to double tuck is superb with a stick! Here comes the confetti! She got a 10 again!!

FINAL: UCLA (198.150), UW (195.775)

VT: Chiles (9.950)

UB: Chiles (9.975)

BB: Chiles, Alipio (9.950)

FX: Chiles (10.000)

AA: Chiles (39.875)

The Bruins did it, becoming the fourth team this season to break 198.000, including an incredible 49.700 on floor with all six routines at 9.900 or higher. They achieved season highs on vault, bars and floor. Jordan Chiles swept all four events for the second straight week. The Huskies unfortunately had to count a fall on beam and finished a bit shy of the 196 they were looking for with a 195.775. Still, that’s a season high for them! They had three rotations to be really proud of, but just couldn’t finish it off on beam.
