Oregon state gymnasts in a huddle on the floor

LIVE BLOG: No. 4 UCLA, No. 17 Oregon State, and No. 20 California at No. 34 Washington

Three former Pac-12 teams and one long remaining member are meeting to bring a great week one matchup. UCLA should be the dominant team here after not losing many routines and bringing in a loaded freshman class, but this will be a great opportunity to see what California, Oregon State, and Washington will look like this season. Oregon State and California both lost at least half of the routines from 2025, and California lost its coaches to Clemson along with a slew of recruits. This will be the first time we really get to see what the lineups may look like for both of these squads that placed in the top 16 a year ago. Washington will also have a lot of lineup turnover as the Huskies had several key injuries last season and are bringing in a large freshman class.

Week one is a great time to look at key freshmen for each of these teams. Eyes will be on UCLA’s elite trio of Ashlee Sullivan, Nola Matthews, and Tiana Sumanasekera as they make their collegiate debuts. Oregon State’s Camryn Richardson has been a staple in preseason intrasquads and will be one to watch on vault and floor. California’s Tonya Paulsson has had fans for years in elite, and will look to make more fans today with her clean form on bars. Former three-star recruit Evelyn DeYoung showed routines on all four events at the latest Washington intrasquad and will be one to keep an eye on for the Huskies.

The meet will be streaming on B1G+ at 6 p.m. ET. Not a subscriber? Sign up today for the monthly pass with the code COLLEGEGYM3 for just $10.99/month (regularly $12.99/month).

Rotation 1: Washington vault, California bars, Oregon State beam, UCLA floor

I don’t have multiple screens with Big 10+ to also put up the quad box so I am live blogging the main stream. Sorry for the routines it doesn’t show.

Esposito (OSU): Smooth front aerial to bhs loso. Overcooked the full turn. Hit the split on the switch split jump out of the beat jump. Small hop back and leg crossing on the double full dismount. 9.825

Lin (UW): Slight piking in the Yfull and had a small hop back. Pretty centered on the mat. 9.725

Newman-Achee (CAL): Hit the toe hand to Maloney to pak. Slightly shy on the cast half but hit the last handstand. Step forward on the full twisting double tuck dismount. 9.8

Tubbs (UW): Closed shoulders on the block of her Yfull and flaired open her arms at the end. Hop back. 9.725

Webster-Longin (UCLA): Legs glued on the front double full. Really clean twisting position on the back 1.5 to front layout as well. A little off on the leap rotation. Controlled the Rudi with a large lunge. 9.825

Schaffer (UW): A little more distance on her Yfull compared to the last two as well as more open shoulders on the block. Still a little pike down and a hop. 9.725

Heather (OSU): Not the most height on the front toss to Korbut and the swingdown was off center. Short of swplit on the switch half. Little lean on the switch split landing going into the split jump. Stuck the gainer pike but took it off to the side. Flexed her feet a little early on it too. 9.8

Bolden (UW): Biggest Yfull of the bunch with really open hips and a small hop back. 9.725

Sumanasekera (UCLA): A little low chest on the double layout and the front foot shifted a litlle. Great leap pass with the switch ring to swicth half to wolf full. Hit the rotation well too. Leg stagger on the back 1.5 to front layout and stutter stepped on the landing. 9.85

Paulsson (CAL): Floaty pak and VL. Good finish on the giant full and just a weight shift on the double tuck landing. Some of the handstands had closed hips. 9.925

Chiles (UCLA): Stuck and then lunged on the double layout. Tour jete half to wolf full was around. Good height too. Low chest on the front tuck through to double tuck. Has to do a small hop forward. 9.925

AFTER ONE: California 49.275, UCLA 49.075, Oregon State 49.075, Washington 48.675

The freshman debuts were strong in the first rotation with the UCLA trio hitting great floor routines and Paulsson having a stellar bars routine that could find her near the top of the rankings nationally throughout the season. Washington minimized deductions on its Yurchenko fulls keeping the hops small, but it isn’t enough to keep up in this meet. Oregon State was super steady on beam which is an ideal outsome for the first meet of the season.

Rotation 2: UCLA vault, Washington bars, California beam, Oregon State floor

Sumanasekera (UCLA): Great height on that Yfull. Landed close to the line. Great body position throughout. Small hop back. 9.8

Mayhew (CAL): Clean full turn. Wobble on the loso series, shift to face the side of the beam. Hit the switch to swicth half with good split position. Sticks the back 1.5 dismount. 9.775

Kaloudis (OSU): Clean front throught to double pike. Controlled the step out of the combo pass. 9.775

Lin (UW): Leg sepration on the geinger but gets it into the overshoot. Steps back on the half in half out. Soft feet on that. 9.675

Vargas (OSU): Low chest on the double pike but gets it up quickly. The switch side half to straddle jump was very high and above 180. Whips the front layout out of the front full. Not the same height on the second leap combo. 9.7

Rosen (UCLA): Loses form throughout the Y1.5 with increasingly more bent legs throughout the twisting. Hop forward on the landing. 9.8

Miller (OSU): A lot of height on the front tuck through to double tuck. Large lunge back on that. Got the switch full around. Off on rotation for the switch half to Popa. Controls the back 1.5 to front layout. 9.7

Sullivan (UCLA): Cross over step on the Y1.5. Steps over the line. The biggest vault dynamics wise in this meet so far. 9.825

Chiles (UCLA): Crooked on the block of the Ydouble. Had good height, but a little leg separation and a small hop back. 9.9

Tubbs (UW): Couldn’t quite grab the bar on the Maloney and had to do an empty swing and had a leg split before going into her pak. Stuck the double layout dismount with a leg separation. 9.15

Esposito (OSU): Great height and control on the front through to double pike. Off on the rotation for the switch side to split jump full. Small pike down and bounce back on the front layout to Rudi. 9.8

AFTER TWO: California 98.300, UCLA 98.225, Oregon State 97.750, Washington 97.400

Washington stuck several dismounts on bars which is what the Huskies will be looking for. Unfortunatly having to drop Tubbs score hurt the scoring potential of that rotation. UCLA made up ground on California with some big caults that rotation. There is room to clean up each of those vaults moving forward. I didn’t see much from California that rotation but the Golden Bears were able to hold the lead halfway through this meet with a steady rotation. Oregon State had a little first meet on floor vibes with some of the landings and have fallen off the pace a bit here.

Rotation 3: Oregon State vault, UCLA bars, Washington beam, California floor

Oppegard (UW): Feet on the loso series. Short of split on the switch to switch half to beat jump. Slight wobble on the full turn. Leg up wobble on the side aerial. Legs staggered on the gainer full dismount, but stuck it. Lacked height on that too. 9.825

Silvers (CAL): Feet and leg separation on the double tuck. Tumbles out of the round off. Little off on the leap rotation. Looked to be going for a wolf 1.5. Small leg separation on the back 1.5 to front half and connects right into a high stag jump.

Rude (OSU): Very low landing on the fhs front pike. Bends her knees early and barely keeps it on her feet. 9.375

Miller (OSU): Full on tuck off with a high chest on the landing and small hop back. 9.725

Newman-Achee (CAL): A little out of control on the double wolf. Small slide on the Rudi. Good positions on the switch ring to switch half combo. Whips around the front layout out of the back 1.5 a little bit but controls the landing. 9.65

Esposito (OSU): Stuck the Yfull. Great height and chest up on the landing. High on the table and barely got weight on one hand. 9.85

Sullivan (UCLA): Great height and roation on the tkachev to pak. Whips the double layout a little and has a hop back. Good handstands throughout. 9.85

Paulsson (CAL): Front through to a very tight double tuck. Controlled the lunge into the corner. Didn’t get the wolf 1.5 around out of the switch half. Very high double pike and shifts the front foot on the lunge. 9.75

Chiles (UCLA): Big release combination. Pauses a bit while standing on the bar. Stuck the double layout. 9.925

Keuneke (CAL): Bends her knees on the loso out of the Rudi. Around on the switch half to wolf full. Much cleaner back 1.5 to front half to leap. Good position on the wolf turn. 9.7

Mayhew (CAL): Slight leg crossing in the front double full to front pike. Really had to fight for the switch half after to switch ring. Very controlled back 1.5 to front full. 9.85

AFTER THREE: UCLA 147.450, California 146.975, Washington 146.675, Oregon State 146.600

Washington had a great beam rotation. While I don’t agree with all of the scores, it was the exact rotation that the Huskies were looking for. California had the opposite rotation as floor was not very kind to the Golder Bears. There were several landing errors and mistakes on leaps that kept scores low and allowed UCLA to take a commanding lead. UCLA capatalized on bars with a huger routine from Chiles. Oregon State was able to put together a good vault rotation thanks to the big vaults from Esposito and Richards at the end.

Rotation 4: California vault, Oregon State bars, UCLA beam, Washington floor

Fichiera (UW): Front layout to Rudi to stagwas controlled. Hit the switch side to straddle and looked like she wanted to rotate the straddle. Good control on the back 1.5 to front full. 9.825

Paulsson (CAL): Open hips on the Yfull and has nice pointed toes. Not the biggest vault and a hop back. 9.775

Matthews (UCLA): Hit the swicth to split. Very solid side aerial to bhs. Single wolf turn. Stayed low on that. Big hop back on the ro double full dismount. Crosses legs and bends them a little on that dismount. 9.85

Newman-Achee (CAL): Stuck the Yfull. Good height on that. Closed shouders on the block and lands with one foot on the line. 9.85

Sumanasekera (UCLA): Great flexibility on the mount. Arm wave on the full turn. Slight shift on the bhs loso. Smooth front aerial to beat. Pause between the split jump and split ring. Lower legs cross in the back 1.5 but she sticks it. 9.95

McWilliams (UW): A lot of height on the Rudi to loso. Off on the rotation of the switch side half to straddle. Controls the double pike. 9.825

Brown (CAL): Lacked a lot of distance on the Yfull and took a large step forward. Did not get the block. 9.65

Chiles (UCLA): Solid loso series. Lacked height on the cat leap going into the switch side. Small shoulder dip on the full turn. Sharp side aerial. Sticks the double full dismount. Great height on that. 9.975

DeVries (OSU): Floaty Maloney to pak. Might have been shy on the last handstand. Stuck the dismount. 9.925

Alipio (UCLA): Lacks some height on the bhs bhs loso. Solid side aerial. Moves through the split leap to switch to beat. Dips her shoulder a little between the first two leaps. Sticks the tucked gainer full. 9.925

McDonough (UW): Goes out of bounds on the final pass which was a front double full. 9.5

FINAL: UCLA 196.975, California 196.000, Washington 195.625, Oregon State 195.550

UCLA narrowly misses out on breaking 197 to start the season and would have if the crowd got what they wanted with a Chiles 10 on beam there. California had some lower scores on floor, but the potential is there to still be a top 20 team. Washington is looking good to bounce back from last season. For Oregon State you can see where the lineup turnover hurt the lineup and it might take a few weeks to see where this roster can really go.

VT: Chiles 9.9

UB: Paulsson, Chiles, DeVries: 9.925

BB: Chiles 9.975

FX: Chiles 9.925

AA: Chiles 39.725
