College Gymnastics’ Defining Rivalries of the 21st Century

Rivalries are the pinnacle of college sports, and NCAA gymnastics is no exception. As arenas across the country fill up more frequently, these intense matchups capture the essence of what makes the sport so thrilling. From legendary coaching duels to individual showdowns between some of the sport’s all-time greats, the 21st century has delivered drama, history, and unforgettable moments. These defining matchups have shaped the national landscape, decided championships, and elevated gymnastics to new heights since the turn of the century.

Alabama – Georgia

One of the most iconic rivalries in NCAA gymnastics, the clashes between Alabama and Georgia set the standard for what a college gymnastics rivalry could be. The intense showdowns between these two SEC powerhouses, particularly from the 1990s into the 2010s, were always a must-watch. With titles often at stake, every meet carried significant weight. But it was the coaching legends—Alabama’s Sarah Patterson and Georgia’s Suzanne Yoculan—that truly gave this rivalry its emotional intensity. Their rivalry, fueled by top-tier gymnastics and captivating storylines, drew huge crowds and impressive TV ratings. So significant was their impact that ESPN Films even released a documentary about their legacy. While both programs are currently undergoing rebuilds, Georgia’s resurgence this season means the rivalry could soon be revived to its former glory.

Michigan – Michigan State

In addition to their classic football and basketball rivalry, Michigan and Michigan State have made a mark in gymnastics, with the battle for Big Ten supremacy heating up in recent years. Historically, Michigan has dominated the conference, securing the Big Ten’s only NCAA title in 2021. But Michigan State’s rise into the top 15 in recent seasons has made this in-state rivalry a must-watch. Although Michigan leads the all-time series 78-40, Michigan State has given the Wolverines a run for their money, even taking home the conference meet title in 2023. With Big Ten gymnastics on the rise, this rivalry is more important than ever, and both programs will continue to push each other to new heights.

UCLA – Utah

Despite moving to new conferences, UCLA and Utah remain committed to keeping their fierce rivalry alive. This matchup has become synonymous with thrilling finishes, and it’s not uncommon for these duals to come down to the wire. Utah leads the series 40-14 and has won the last five matchups, but each victory has been hard-fought, with the Bruins consistently making it close. Known for their star-studded rosters, which regularly feature Olympians, this rivalry has always been about more than just conference titles—it’s about national aspirations. With both teams aiming for top spots in the postseason, the 2025 version of this rivalry promises to be another tight contest.

Florida – LSU

Before Florida claimed its first national title in 2013, the rivalry between Florida and LSU was often viewed as a battle between two of the sport’s best programs to have never won a championship. Both teams had established themselves as powerhouses, but hadn’t quite reached the pinnacle. Fast forward to today, and both programs have since won national titles, but the rivalry remains as exciting as ever. With top-rated recruits flocking to both schools, this matchup continues to hold major significance, especially when it comes to national rankings and SEC standings. Whether for bragging rights or postseason positioning, this rivalry always brings the heat.

Alabama – Auburn

The “Iron Bowl” of NCAA gymnastics has never been more relevant. Historically dominated by Alabama, the Crimson Tide had a long stranglehold on this rivalry until Auburn broke a decades-long losing streak by winning the conference dual for the first time in over 100 tries in 2022. Auburn’s victory was no fluke, as the Tigers followed up that historic win with another huge upset in 2025, defeating Alabama in Tuscaloosa for the first time ever. With Auburn emerging as a top-20 program and Alabama still a fixture in the national scene, this rivalry has redefined itself and is sure to impact the national landscape for years to come.

Maggie Nichols (Oklahoma) – Kyla Ross (UCLA)

One of the most iconic individual rivalries in NCAA gymnastics, Maggie Nichols and Kyla Ross defined the sport in the late 2010s. Both athletes transitioned from elite gymnastics to NCAA competition with ease, dominating the sport throughout their college careers. Ross, an Olympic gold medalist, and Nichols, a world champion, brought unparalleled accolades to their respective programs. Nichols led Oklahoma to two NCAA titles and achieved a historic feat by earning a 10.0 on every event, while Ross helped UCLA achieve national prominence with her flawless routines. Their fierce competition and shared ability to push the sport forward made this rivalry a defining chapter in NCAA gymnastics, and their impact is still felt today.
