Leotard Rankings Week 7; wordpress featured imaged

Leotard Rankings: Week 7

Gymnastics fans love leotards, it’s just a fact. We love seeing new designs, creating our own, and especially judging them. That’s why we’re back for another season of leotard rankings!

Each week we’re analyzing new designs to find our weekly faves. Leos can earn up to three points for design; up to two points for construction, which includes fabric, fit, and sparkle; up to one point each for school/theme spirit and creativity; and up to three points for overall appearance. This week Allison, Annie, and Claire H are joining editor-in-chief Elizabeth for judging.

Don’t agree with our ranking? Make your opinion heard by voting in the fan poll at the end of the article each week or by voicing your thoughts on social media!

George Washington: 9.425

A gymnast wearing a white and navy gymnastics leotard with long sleeves. The front is decorated with rhinestones in a geometric starburst and chevron pattern. The inset image in the lower right corner shows the back of the leotard with a "GW" logo.

This is tied with Penn State for my favorite leo of the week. It’s potentially perfect except for the slightly wonky rhinestone placement on the bottom line of the white. Otherwise, I love everything about it, from the matte white to the subtle gold to the geometric pattern. This is a fantastic tribute leotard because it does its job without being over the top.

Oh, this is ELEGANT. The design on the top is absolutely stunning and I love the GW on the back. The shiny, deep, navy blue is a perfect contrast to the white and every single color on this leo complements the next. I hope George Washington keeps this one around for a long time.

LOVE. The sequin pattern up top is amazing and I love the gold throughout. I love the idea of a tribute leotard with the initial A on the hip for Alex deMoura, and I know this Leo must be so special for the team. This one is one to remember, for sure.

Claire H: 9.400

Design 2.9/3, Construction 1.8/2, School/Theme Spirit 1/1, Creativity 0.9/1, Overall Appearance 2.8/3

Wow I love this even without the special meaning! The design is really great with the use of both the lines and rhinestones to make the pattern, rather than solely relying on rhinestones. It really looks like waves with a geometric touch when you know the meaning. Plus, the tribute to Alex deMoura with the script A at the hip is such a nice tribute without it being super in your face.

Penn State: 9.325

A white gymnastics leotard with long sleeves and navy blue detailing. The front has a sleek, starburst rhinestone pattern extending from the Penn State logo at the waist. The back features an intricate open-back design with navy blue crisscross straps adorned with rhinestones.

LOVE. This is a fantastic leotard. I love the mostly white look with blue accents, I ADORE the back, and I especially like the top-of-the-arm sleeve mesh. This is a close-to-perfect leo for me. I don’t even mind the belly logo because for some reason it just makes sense.

My feelings toward white leos aside, this is gorgeous. And the more I think about it, I don’t think any other color than white would make this leo pop the way it does. With the right theme, I think a version of this leo design would be on point at the Met Gala.

Annie illustrated headshotAnnie: 9.600

Year after year white leos grow on me more and more, and this one definitely ranks at the top of the list. I LOVE the back and the simple sparkles on the front. The team logo is perfect. Penn State has been killing the leo game this year, and I look forward to their leos every week!

Claire H: 9.100

Oh I love this leo! The navy blue outline contrasts nicely with the all-white leo to bring in some school spirit, and I like the way the design comes together with the lion logo on the front!

Stout: 7.825

A sleek gray leotard with sheer mesh sleeves and asymmetrical geometric rhinestone patterns across the bodice. The front features a mix of matte and shiny black fabric, while the back has a deep V-cut with rhinestone embellishments forming "Devils."

This may be my favorite DIII leotard in recent memory. Stout knocked it out of the park. It’s the same or a similar design as a leotard Temple debuted last year, but it’s a completely different take on it. I love the funky shade of gray, the geometric design, and the placement of Devils in the negative space on the back. A+ work.

Design 2.8/3, Construction 1.5/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.8/1, Creativity 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

Echoing Elizabeth right off the bat, I love that placement of Devils on the back. The geometric lines, mesh, and material are fabulous. If anything, I think I’d want a slightly more contrasting color somewhere but that’s just being picky at this point. I love this leo.

Annie illustrated headshotAnnie: 8.000

Design 2.8/3, Construction 1.5/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.7/1, Creativity 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

I like it! I would love to see the color in person, as it seems a little dull, but I’m assuming that’s just the picture. Love the shapes of the front and the angle of Devils on the back is eye catching for sure. I love the placement and shapes of the sparkles too–definitely a keeper for them!

Claire H: 7.200

Design 2.5/3, Construction 1.5/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.6/1, Creativity 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2/3

This is a good leo from Stout. I like the way the mesh is used and the “devils” in rhinestones in the mesh on the back. I’m not sure about the choice to make it gray, and at least from the photos you can’t really tell there are blue rhinestones. I think I would like it even more in blue.

Temple: 7.775

A black leotard with long mesh sleeves and a high neckline. The front has "Owls" spelled out in rhinestones across the chest, with red and white crystals scattered throughout. The back features a keyhole cutout with a symmetrical rhinestone pattern that mimics an owl’s eyes. The sleeves have small Temple T logos.

I like a black leotard fine, but this one is kind of boring. I didn’t even “get” that the back design was Owl eyes at first (probably more of a me problem). I do like the arm Ts though. I think this is a design that needed some sort of red.

Illustrated headshot of Allison FreemanAllison: 8.100

Design 2.2/3, Construction 1.7/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.9/1, Creativity 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

The Owl eyes went totally over my head at first, but once that clicked into place, I’m into it. I wish the eyes were more eye-y but you know I love a sleek black leo and the gemstones being plentiful? It’s a hit for me.

Annie illustrated headshotAnnie: 8.700

Design 2.5/3, Construction 1.5/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.9/1, Creativity 1.0/1, Overall Appearance 2.8/3

I will never be too upset with an all black leo: it’s classic, flattering, and full of opportunities for sparkle or unique designs, like this one. I also missed the owl eyes at first, but LOVE the ideas here. The T’s on the arm are also super cute. Overall, love.

Claire H: 8.400

Design 2.4/3, Construction 1.7/2, School/Theme Spirit 1/1, Creativity 0.9/1, Overall Appearance 2.4/3

I really like this one! I love when schools use dead space to create a design like Temple did here with “Owls” on the front. And the subtle rhinestone owl eyes on the back are so creative. Love it!

Ball State: 7.075

A close-up of a red gymnastics leotard adorned with sparkling rhinestones arranged in a cascading pattern. The inset image in the lower right corner shows the back of the leotard, which features an open-back design with crisscrossing straps.

At first glance, it’s a pretty basic red leotard. However, the details are what make me like it. The shade of red is really lovely, and I like the subtle rhinestone pattern on the front. I would have preferred the back straps not have fabric underneath, but I also get why teams do it.

Illustrated headshot of Allison FreemanAllison: 7.300

Design 2.0/3, Construction 1.6/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.6/1, Creativity 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.4/3

There’s classic red lipstick and there’s classic red leotards, and you just cannot go wrong with either of those things. Loving the strappy back, plus the rich amount of gemstones works so perfectly because the design and color beneath isn’t busy whatsoever.

Annie illustrated headshotAnnie: 7.100

Design 2.0/3, Construction 1.3/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.8/1, Creativity 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2.5/3

When in doubt, there’s nothing wrong with a leo in your school’s color with some sequins on it. Sure, it may be simple, but it’s classic and hard to mess up. It’s not groundbreaking by any means, but it’s cute and I like it. Love the white straps around the arms and the back, and under the meet lights I’m sure this looks gorgeous.

Claire H: 7.200

Design 2/3, Construction 1.6/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.8/1, Creativity 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

This leo is simple and fine. I like the white outline and the white straps across the back, although I wish there wasn’t mesh behind them. My (maybe irrelevant) complaint here is that the preview video about an art museum completely misled me into thinking that this leo would be based on a painting or have some crazy artistic design and then it was just… red.

Arizona State: 7.050

A gymnast from Arizona State wearing a gradient navy and white long-sleeve leotard. The bodice is adorned with a starburst pattern made of silver rhinestones with a red pitch fork on the white of the V. The back of the leotard features a deep V-cut design with matching rhinestone accents, creating a sleek and elegant look.

Just when I was thinking a lot of the recent Arizona State leotards looked similar, it debuts this. I love the white to black ombre, the white sleeves, and the rhinestone design on the front and back. I could take or leave the side white, but it’s not super offensive either.

Illustrated headshot of Allison FreemanAllison: 6.100

Design 1.8/3, Construction 1.0/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.8/1, Creativity 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 1.7/3

I’m having a really hard time with the diamonds on the side, but I can’t decide what it would need to look like for me to really like it. Those aside, I love the deep v with the pitchfork. And the more I think about it, I think a matching shade of red on the sides would make this pop. Gemstone use is fabulous, however.

Annie illustrated headshotAnnie: 6.500

Design 2.8/3, Construction 1.0/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.2/1, Creativity 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 1.8/3

Is anyone else as confused about the colors as me? I thought the bottom was navy blue at first glance, and I’m still not convinced it’s not. I honestly thought it was an Arizona leo at first glance, not Arizona State. I like the design and the sequins are amazing, but…is it blue? Black? Purple? HELP.

Claire H: 8.600

Design 2.8/3, Construction 1.9/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.4/1, Creativity 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.8/3

On its own, I love this leo. The design is pretty, I love the way the rhinestones outline the dark and light purple, and the way the pitchfork logo fits in the V neck pattern is great. However, if it weren’t for the pitchfork I’d have no clue this was an Arizona State leo. Those shades of purple (despite loving them) are not part of Arizona State’s colors and I haven’t seen anything of significance as to why they choose it.

Rutgers: 6.850

A split image of a gymnast in a black, white, and red leotard. The front features a bold V-shaped design with rhinestones and a silhouette of a knight’s head and the state of New Jersey. The back, visible in the right half of the image, has an open-back design with a white panel and black sleeves. The gymnast wears a red and white bow in her hair.

Design 2.3/3, Construction 0.5/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.8/1, Creativity 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2.3/3

I love this a LOT, but it does have a few flaws. But first, the positives. I love the velvet and the mostly black and white design with red accents. The logo on the chest, though, looks more like the Barbie logo with a ponytail than the Knight head and New Jersey logo. And the lower front red band doesn’t continue onto the back; it just stops abruptly and looks bad from all views except straight on from the front and back. While I like the leo overall, I do have to dock it for construction.

Illustrated headshot of Allison FreemanAllison: 7.300

Design 2.2/3, Construction 1.5/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.9/1, Creativity 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 1.9/3

I do wish the front and back bands connected, because who doesn’t love continuity in design. But that aside, the mesh sleeves, the VELVET, the open back, I’m loving all of it. The gemstones and red design on the sleeves are great touches for me too. I’m a sucker for a retro-esque leo.

Annie illustrated headshotAnnie: 6.100

Design 2.2/3, Construction 0.8/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.7/1, Creativity 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 1.7/3

I love how vintage this looks, and I am a sucker for an open back leo. However, I am having a hard time moving past the knight on the front; I’m definitely getting Barbie ponytail vibes as well. I agree that the red lines not matching up from front to back is frustrating. I love the idea here, and I think this leo could have been something great, but it didn’t quite live up to its potential for me.

Claire H: 7.400

Design 2.6/3, Construction 1/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.8/1, Creativity 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 2.4/3

I like this leo a lot! It reminds me of Stanford’s Retro S design, which I also love. My one gripe is that the white and red design on the front doesn’t line up with the colors on the back, making the front and back disjointed, which unfortunately pulls down this score quite a bit.

Yale: 6.425

A navy leotard with a sweetheart neckline design. There are rhinestones fanning out from the belly button area, sort of like a butterfly. The back is open with a thin strap at the top and the word "Bulldogs" below the keyhole. On the front hip, there is a Yale Y logo.

This is soooo boring. Yale has so many all navy leotards, it doesn’t need any more. The design itself is fine—nothing egregious—but there’s nothing special about it either. I don’t have much more to say than that.

Illustrated headshot of Allison FreemanAllison: 6.600

Design 2.0/3, Construction 1.5/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.8/1, Creativity 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 1.8/3

I’m into this leo, it’s subtle, simple, and classic. The mesh with the sweetheart neckline is one of my favorite designs on any leo, and this is no exception. I really enjoy the additions of the Y and Bulldogs in gemstones, too. While it may not live at the front of my leotard memory, there’s something to be said for a leo that doesn’t boldly stand out for the wrong reasons either.

Annie illustrated headshotAnnie: 7.300

Design 2.4/3, Construction 1.7/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.8/1, Creativity 0.4/1, Overall Appearance 2.0 /3

I like this leo, although I wish they had filmed the video in a brighter light so I can see the color better. Usually sweetheart necklines aren’t my favorite, but I like the sequin design and the open back. The mesh sleeves look comfortable, and I also appreciate the school spirit with the Bulldogs and the Y. I’m not mad about it!

Claire H: 6.600

Design 2.1/3, Construction 1.5/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.6/1, Creativity 0.3/1, Overall Appearance 2.1/3

There’s nothing wrong with this leo, but it’s also not special in any way. A sweetheart neckline with a starburst rhinestone pattern looks nice. The bulldogs in rhinestones across the back is also a classic. Overall it’s pretty but nothing special.

Ohio State: 6.050

A white and gray gymnastics leotard with long sleeves. The back features red floral patterns surrounding a rhinestone-studded design, with a shimmering "Ohio State" logo in the center. The front also has red floral accents and a mix of rhinestones, creating a bold and elegant look.

I normally like gray on a leotard, but for some reason it doesn’t fully work here. I think it might be the matte gray (versus a mystique fabric). I think I might have preferred black or gunmetal instead. I like the floral top half though; that’s really nice.

Illustrated headshot of Allison FreemanAllison: 6.800

Design 2.0/3, Construction 1.5/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.8/1, Creativity 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2.0/3

When I think leotard, this is the image that appears in my head. It’s safe, it’s reliable, it’s that favorite t-shirt you know you can reach for that’ll deliver time after time. But it also reminds me of the Barbie leo from the gymnastics video game in 2001 so there’s nostalgia for me.

Annie illustrated headshotAnnie: 4.400

Design 1.0/3, Construction 1.3/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.6/1, Creativity 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 1.0/3

I’m not really a fan of florals on leos. I don’t like the design on the front, it looks way too empty in the middle. I do love that a lot of schools have been leaning into gray lately, so that is a saving grace for me.

Claire H: 7.100

Design 2.2/3, Construction 1.5/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.7/1, Creativity 0.7/1, Overall Appearance 2/3

Ohio State gets a few points back for debuting this on Valentine’s Day weekend, but on any normal day of the year this wouldn’t be my favorite leo. The grey bottom is too much contrast from the floral design on top, and I wish the Ohio State logo was in the center on the front instead of…nothing?

Florida: 5.850

A Florida gymnast in a vibrant, hot pink leotard with sheer mesh sleeves. The front of the leotard has a fan-like design of silver rhinestones that radiate from the neckline down to the chest. The open back is framed by thin, shiny straps, creating a modern and dynamic design.

What’s that? Florida with another pink leo? I know it didn’t have a new one in 2024 for the first time maybe ever, but I would have preferred that streak continue. Plus it’s a design the Gators already have a blue version of. Sigh.

Illustrated headshot of Allison FreemanAllison: 5.700

Design 2.0/3, Construction 1.5/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.5/1, Creativity 0.3/1, Overall Appearance 1.4/3

Much like the other pink leo, the construction and design is there but the pink is so much. I know there are varying shades but I wish they leaned further into that further, maybe with some deep magenta and a little white with a soft coral to hint at the orange.

Annie illustrated headshotAnnie: 6.100

Design 2.0/3, Construction 1.7/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.8/1, Creativity 0.1/1, Overall Appearance 1.5/3

I’m bored. I want to score this lower, but I do actually like the leo itself. I just can’t ignore the fact that we’ve already seen this in blue. I expect more from a team like Florida. Yawn.

Claire H: 7.400

Design 2.2/3, Construction 1.8/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.9/1, Creativity 0.3/1, Overall Appearance 2.2/3

Florida loses creativity points here since this is just a pink version of a blue leo they already have, but I do like that blue leo and it also works in pink. One of the things I like about this leo is how the design on the front matches the straps on the back, making it a very cohesive design.

Southern Connecticut: 5.750

The front of the leotard is white and features a high neckline with a keyhole cutout. Blue rhinestone designs radiate from the neckline. A metallic blue waistband and matching choker-style collar contrast the white base. The back has an open cut with crisscrossing blue straps.

I really don’t know how to feel about this one. I like some elements—the back, the front design, the colored rhinestones—but I hate the dog collar. Plus, this almost makes me think more of Air Force than Southern Connecticut with the shade of blue.

Illustrated headshot of Allison FreemanAllison: 5.300

Design 1.5/3, Construction 1.2/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.5/1, Creativity 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.5/3

First things first, this does give more of an Air Force feeling than Southern Connecticut. With that aside, the white works well with that shade of blue. The strappy feel in the back along with the belt are great touches along with the gemstones. The cut out with the collar looks good in stills but the wrinkling when it motion doesn’t work.

Annie illustrated headshotAnnie: 5.900

Design 1.7/3, Construction 1.2/2, School/Theme Spirit .7/1, Creativity .5/1, Overall Appearance 1.8/3

I don’t hate it, but I do agree with Elizabeth that it does indeed look like a dog collar. The colors are nice. The leo gets the job done, but isn’t too memorable. I like the back and the sequin placement, but could do without the hole in the front. Overall, it’s alright in my book.

Claire H: 6.300

Design 2/3, Construction 1.2/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.6/1, Creativity 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 2/3

This leo is fine. I like the blue belt and the colored rhinestones as contrast to the white leo. But there’s something about the way the blue pattern criss-crosses in the back paired with the rectangular opening that isn’t working for me. Although simpler, I think I would have liked it better if the belt just continued straight around the back.

Georgia: 5.550

A gymnast from Georgia wearing a hot pink leotard with glittery silver accents. The leotard features a white diagonal stripe design across the upper chest and a keyhole cutout on the front and back. The word "Georgia" is bedazzled across the front in silver rhinestones, adding to the bold, sparkling effect.

No, but thanks. It’s too bright, and I don’t like the chest hole, and the back doesn’t make sense. I was hopeful that the Cecile era of Georgia gymnastics would bring some fresh concepts and designs, but with this first showing, I’m disappointed.

Illustrated headshot of Allison FreemanAllison: 5.000

Ya know, I’m not hating the general construction and appearance. I know it’s for the pink meet, but honestly I think this would rock as a regular Georgia leo. Once you move past the pink, it’s rather fierce.

Annie illustrated headshotAnnie: 6.000

Design 1.5/3, Construction 1.0/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.9/1, Creativity 0.8/1, Overall Appearance 1.8/3

I don’t hate it…they definitely win the award for brightest pink leo, that’s for sure. I like the design of the leo and the ombre sleeves. I think the neon color choice distracts from the actual leo itself, but honestly, I’m not too mad about it.

Claire H: 6.500

Design 2/3, Construction 1.4/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.9/1, Creativity 0.5/1, Overall Appearance 1.7/3

Wow, this is SO pink! It’s giving Barbie. The deep pink color, the way it stops in a horizontal line across the top, along with the chest hole are all design choices I don’t love. Once the shock factor of the color wears off though, it’s not bad. I do like the back design quite a bit.

Nebraska: 4.300

A red gymnastics leotard with long mesh sleeves and rhinestone embellishments. The front features a high neckline with two cutouts on the shoulders and a sheer panel with a sparkling rhinestone pattern. The back has a crisscross strap design with a sheer panel. The leotard has "B1G" lettering on the hip, representing the Big Ten Conference.

I’ve been calling this the bib leotard. I really dislike it. The bib design is just not it. And the deep V just accentuates it more. The rhinestone design on the front is nice, I guess?

There is a lot going on here. In theory, I love the idea of this but the execution didn’t quite play out. I think some mesh closer to the collar plus using colors other than red would speak to me more.

Annie illustrated headshotAnnie: 4.000

I like the color and the sparkle, but the neck cut outs are a definite no go for me. It looks uncomfortable, and while I appreciate an effort to be unique, this just doesn’t do it for me. No thanks!

Claire H: 4.800

Design 1.2/3, Construction 1/2, School/Theme Spirit 0.5/1, Creativity 0.6/1, Overall Appearance 1.5/3

I don’t love deep V necks and I don’t love bib designs, and this leo is proof that two wrongs don’t always make a right. Since I hate cutouts more than deep Vs, I’d say the best way to salvage this one would be if they filled in the neck area. But overall, I’m fine leaving this in the closet next season.

  1. just wanted to point out for future rankings: sequins are flat disks made from plastic with a hole in the center and crystals are made from 3D etched glass. Almost every college will use crystals over sequins on their competitive styles.

  2. I couldn’t make a decision this week. They were all good but I can’t pick a winner. So my joint winners are: Penn State, Temple, Yale, Rutgers and Georgia. A good week this week.
