California's CJ Keuneke does choreography on floor

LIVE BLOG: Alaska, No. 5 California and Cornell at UC Davis

As week three of the college gymnastics season wraps up, UC Davis is hosting an interesting quad meet that brings Alaska, Cornell, and last year’s national runner-up, California, to face the UC Davis Aggies. California should easily win this meet and will be looking to improve on its solid 197.250 from a week ago. As always, Mya Lauzon and eMjae Frazier will be leaders for the Golden Bears.

For Alaska and Cornell, this is their second meet of the weekend, having competed against Sacramento State on Friday night. Host UC Davis is looking to break into the 194s today after struggling a bit in its first few meets, particularly on beam. Last meet, standout Keanna Abraham was back on vault and crushed her Yurchekno one and a half for a 9.875, a score that some said was too low, even with the tighter scores we’ve seen so far this season. It’ll be interesting to see how that vault is evaluated today and if the Aggies will have her back on floor as well.

Touch warm up is getting underway, and I’m not sure where the stream will go, but I will catch what I can!

Rotation 1: UC Davis VT, Cornell UB, Alaska BB, California FX

Reichow (VT): Yurchenko full, pikes it down a bit, but not badd, hop back. 9.675

Byun (UB): Maloney, short handstand, Bail. Good final handstand, toe on, giant full is late, double tuck with a step. Solid start 9.500

Kim (VT): Yurchenko full, great distance, hop back and to the side 9.775

Kane (FX): Punch front full, Rudi, well controlled. Switch side 3/4, straddle. Back 1.4 front lay, a little quick out of it, but minor issues

Wyly (VT): Tucked yurchenko full, hop back.

Looks like a hit routine for Alaska on beam, gainer full to finish.

Ray (VT): Round half on, tucked half, small hop, great amplitude.

Williams (FX): Front lay, Rudi, great height on the Rudi. Switch half, split jump. Back 1.5, front layout, clean.

Abraham (VT): Yurchenko 1.5, almost stuck but takes an arm swing a step back, great vault as usual

Desouza (BB): Coming in mid way, full turn, small check. Stuck front full dismount.

Beers (UB): Good handstand. Big Tkatchev with flex feet, small form break on a cast half into bail. Final handstand is good, toe on piked half dismount is stuck, some form errors but strong individual elements.

Cesario (FX): Full in to open, nice chest up landing position, step out is a touch large. Switch leap, switch ring half, okay on the ring position. Back 1.5, front tuck, was supposed to be a layout, mistimed the punch and had to adjust, probably will be a start value issue now

Boyd (BB): Coming in late, see the end of a hit acro series. Switch half is pretty solid. Pike half stuck with chest down and an arm swing.

Shambo (UB): Straddled Jaeger with some bent knees. Solid bail, good handstand, double layout hop back 9.7, nice way to end the rotation for Cornell!

Costello (BB): Bhs loso, secure. Full turn. Switch leap, switch 3/4, great extension on the switch leap, a little short of the second leap. Back 1.5, small hop, nice set 9.725

Frazier (FX): Front tuck through to double tuck, slide back. Switch leap, switch ring full, sissone, great positions. My stream went out for a second, but the front layout looked a little short on her last pass

A fall in the anchor spot on beam for Alaska

Lauzon (FX): Front double full, punch front, right on. Switch ring, switch half, excellent. Back 1.5, front full, superb control. One of her best floor routines, should be a huge number. 9.925

After 1: California 49.250 UC Davis 48.750, Alaska 48.225, Cornell 47.950

A strong rotation for all routines, with no major errors having to be counted by any team. Ray and Abraham were highlights for UC Davis on vault, while Morgan Shambo led Cornell on bars. Alaska hit 5 beam routines, and its dance elements were quite nice as a lineup. California had a couple small errors on floor, and will feel like it left a tenth or two on the floor, but was overall quite solid. As expected, the Golden Bears have a significant lead, with UC Davis in a solid second but Alaska and Cornell are quite close. On to rotation two!

Rotation 2: California VT, UC Davis UB, Cornell BB, Alaska FX

Scafani (UB): Blind change, straddle Jaeger, overshoot, flexed fete and a small form break on the overshoot. Giant full double tuck with a hop.

First beam routine is hit for Cornell

Perkins (FX): Coming in midway to a routine. Switch half, stag jump full, stag jump has an imprecise landing. Whip 1.5, controlled.

Wiley (VT): Yurchenko 1.5, pretty large knee bend and a hp forward, nice height

Michelini (BB): Full turn, balance check. Bhs, loso, leg up balance check. Switch leap, switch half, beat jump, lovely split positions. Side aerial is secure. Punch fornt tuck full, great second half, but some bobbles at the beginning

Cesario (VT): Nearly sticks the Yurchenko full, but takes a step, and then another. Nice amplitude, could have more distance.

Gideon (UB): Piked Jaeger overshoot and falls. Finishes with a double layout with a bounce in place.

Mayhew (VT): Yurchenko 1.5 with a hop backwards, nice from in the air

Spain (FX): Rudi, legs are slightly crossed. Split ring jump full, missing some ring position. Switch split full, Popa, Straddle half. Back 1.5, front lay, arched over the layout. 9.425

Crashed dismount on beam for Cornell

Wakita (UB): Great handstand, Nice Jaeger. Another good handstand, gorgeous Pak, but has a stop and almost falls off on the kip up. Double layout with a hop.

Tillmans (FX): Double tuck, solid, leaps have some flexed feet. Back 1.5, front pike. Whip, back 1.5 with a crossover step.

Tehrani (BB): Coming in mid way, Switch leap, split jump half. full turn, tiniest of balance checks. Gainer full is stuck.

Fitz-gerald(UB): Great blind Change, Jaeger to overshoot, a little bit messy on the overshoot. Gorgeous final handstand, double layout is stuck, much needed hit.

Burton (BB): Front aerial, side aerial, good connection. Switch leap, split jump, might’ve been a touch short of split on the jump. Front toss, nice. Back 1.5 is stuck, nice routine! 9.700

Moneymaker (UB): Maloney, Bail, saves the Bail, great final handstand, double layout, small hop.

Boyd (FX): Front tuck through to double tuck, slide back, good chest position. Switch side 3/4, Popa. Double pike, near stick, best routine so far.

Costello hit a solid floor routine for Alaska, ending with a clean Rudi.

Fairbairn (FX): Front lay, Rudi, nice twisting position. Tour jete half, straddle jump. Front layout, front full, slide forward. 9.850!

After 2: California 98.425, UC Davis 97.050, Cornell 96.450, Alaska 96.150

Through two rotation and California is still on top. The Bears were a bit hoppy on vault, securing a 49.175. UC Davis had some struggles on bars, but the extension and handstands throughout the line up look really good. As the season progresses, bars should be a good event for the Aggies. Cornell was secure on beam, minimizing mistakes. Burton was a real highlight with her front aerial, side aerial combination! Alaska was solid on floor, and Fairbairn’s ABBA themed routine in the anchor spot was a real highlight.

Rotation 3: Alaska VT, California UB, UC Davis BB, Cornell FX

Rothstein (FX): Front tuck through to double tuck, nice control. Double pike, nicely done.

My wifi cut out for multiple minute so resuming now.

Leesig (VT): Tucked Yurcenko full, big step backwards.

Cesario (UB): Straddled Jaeger, overshoot, nice. Small wobble on the transition for low to high. Great handstand, stuck double layout.

Fall on beam for UC Davis.

This stream is not my friend, missed a lot more unfortunately.

Oshiro (BB): Side aerial, bhs, bent knees but secure. Switch leap, split 3/4, split 3/4 had excellent height. Gainer pike with a hop.

Chen (FX): Exhibition, Double pike is short with a step forward. Back 1.5, front lay, good control, a little arched on the layout. Switch side, Popa, maybe? Landing positions very unclear.

Loving the dog UC Davis has on the floor with them

After 3: California 147.625, UC Davis 145.825, Cornell 145.225, Alaska 144.375

So unfortunately missed a lot of that rotation, but solid scores all around. On to the last event.

Rotation 4: Cornell VT, Alaska UB, California BB, UC Davis FX

Cesario (BB): Bhs, loso good. Switch leap, switch half, fine, second leap is a tiny bit short. Stuck 1.5, great start 9.900

Scafani (FX): Double back, solid. Tour jete, wolf jump full, fine. Back 1.5, front pike. Rudi, stag jump.

Williams (BB): Switch leap, split jump, nice. Bhs, gainer full with a slide.

Defranscisco (VT): Yurchenko half with a big step, some form in the air

Lessig (UB): Good handstand, nice Tkachev, another good handstand. Cast 1/2, Bail with a form break. Stuck full twisting double tuck, that’s a huge routine for Alaska!

Kane (BB): wolf turn, smooth. Side aerial. Bhs, loso solid. Hitch kick, switch side, nice. Back 1.5 with a hop
F

Frazier (BB): Coming in mid way, Front aerial, standing loso, nicely done. Split jump, split ring, great. Back 1.5 with a hop.

Short landing on a double pike last pass for UC Davis on floor.

Tillmanns (UB): good handstand, close catch on the Jaeger, bail. Giant full, double tuck with a step.

Abraham (FX): She’s back!! Excellent double layout. Switch side 1/2, straddle jump, not the most precise twisting on the first leap. Front tuck through to double back, overpowers it and sits it down, great routine up until that point.

Brown (FX): Coming in mid way, switch leap, switch half is clean. Back 1.5 with a hop

Ray (FX): HUGE double pike to open, good control. Tour jete half, split jump full, Popa, so precise on the landing positions. Front tuck through to double back, nearly sticks but then takes a step forward.

Moneymaker (FX): Rudi, loso, small foot movement. Switch half, wolf full, solid. Front tuck through to double back, almost overpowers it but holds on, solid.

FINAL: California 196.950, UC Davis 194.375, Cornell 193.725, Alaska 192.500
