Underrated Recruits That Excel on Beam

With our newest recruit ratings out–including graduating seniors for the first time–it’s easy to focus on the five- and four-star athletes who are in contention to be the next all-around stars at their future college programs. However, since our ratings are based on totals across all four events, those athletes who excel on one or two events may fly under the radar. Coaches will often recruit these gymnasts to fill important holes in event lineups, so we want to take the time to highlight them as well. Note that only three-star and unrated gymnasts are considered for these lists. Today, we’re continuing the series by looking at the top underrated beam workers.

Class of 2024

Brooke Gleichowski

Watch

Rating:  ⭐️⭐️⭐️

College: Georgia

High Score: 9.775

Why She Stands Out: Gleichowski’s movement on beam is exceptional; she connects her tumbling, dance elements, and choreography smoothly and confidently. The 2024 Florida state beam champion closed out her club career with a runner-up finish at nationals.

Hannah Clark

Watch

Rating:  ⭐️⭐️⭐️

College: Clemson

High Score: 9.900

Why She Stands Out: Clark has won one national title, one Region 1 title, and three SoCal state titles on beam; highlights of her routine include a piked front toss to beat jump as well as a well-executed and stickable double twist dismount.

Avery Walters

Watch

Rating:  ⭐️⭐️⭐️

College: Brown

High Score: 9.775

Why She Stands Out: Walters floats across the beam with beautiful extension and confidence to spare. She is a two-time Texas state champion on the event, adding a Region 3 title in 2023 as well. Highlights include a piked front toss (sometimes front aerial) connected with a Korbut.

Robyn Dunne

Watch

Rating:  ⭐️⭐️⭐️

College: Temple

High Score: 9.675

Why She Stands Out: It’s become increasingly rare to see pointed toes and straight legs on beam tumbling, but Dunne manages this with ease. The two-time Colorado state champion is a smooth and confident beamer who should score very high in college.

Sally Wood

Watch

Rating:  NR

College: William & Mary

High Score: 9.650

Why She Stands Out: Wood may not have the titles and accolades of the other gymnasts on this list, but her routine is beautiful to watch, particularly because of the split positions in her leaps and jumps. William & Mary has struggled to find consistency on beam in recent seasons, so Wood has the potential to make a big impact right away.

Class of 2025

Natalie Siljander

Watch

Rating:  ⭐️⭐️⭐️

College: Stanford

High Score: 9.825

Why She Stands Out: Siljander’s execution and extension are reminiscent of reigning SEC Freshman of the Year Lily Smith. Her front toss to scale is a particular highlight, but the entire routine looks effortless and–needless to say–will score very well in college.

Ruth Whaley

Watch

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

College: Uncommitted

High Score: 9.875

Why She Stands Out: Whaley steps outside the box in her beam composition, from her tumbling series (front aerial to back handspring to layout step-out) to her unusual dance element combinations. She is a two-time Region 7 champion on the event and will be fun to watch at whichever college program picks her up.

Brooke Boggess

Watch

Rating: NR

College: Uncommitted

High Score: 9.650

Why She Stands Out: Boggess is a bars and beam specialist, not having competed vault or floor since 2021, but she is a contender to make a top team because of her execution on both of these events. Her beam routine has stunning execution, from her continuous toe point to the oversplit on her dance elements.

Class of 2026

Olivia Choi

Watch

Rating:  ⭐️⭐️⭐️

College: Uncommitted

High Score: 9.800

Why She Stands Out: Choi capped off her sophomore level 10 season with a national title on beam. Her routine is full of difficulty and performed with confidence, and she has two years left to finesse the minor details that will lead to 9.9-plus scores in college.

Lily Caranci

Watch

Rating: NR

College: Uncommitted

High Score: 9.875

Why She Stands Out: Like Choi, Caranci is essentially college-ready on beam, save a few minor form details that she has plenty of time to work on.

Addison Anderson

Watch

Rating: NR

College: Uncommitted

High Score: 9.625

Why She Stands Out: Anderson moves through her routine like a natural beamer; even when she has a balance check she is able to finesse her presentation to continue the flow of her gymnastics. This quality is becoming increasingly rare and is prized in college gymnastics.

Daelin Diaz-Luong

Watch

Rating:  ⭐️⭐️⭐️

College: Uncommitted

High Score: 9.650

Why She Stands Out: Diaz-Luong has a patience to her beamwork that is very pleasing to watch, and it accentuates the floaty quality of her tumbling. She won a Region 8 title on beam this year and surely has many more accolades in her future.
