Fantasy Central: Week 2

Fantasy Central: Week 2

It’s year three with Gymlytics fantasy college gymnastics in 2024! We all learned lessons when GymChem took up the helm and created her revamped game, and we’re ready for a fun 2024.

Our weekly cadence will continue to match Gymlytics: The fantasy “week” begins with Friday meets, ends with any Thursday ones and trading happens every Monday via waiver wire. Every Tuesday, You’ll find us talking about “next week,” meaning the fantasy week starting that Friday.

This is your one-stop shop for all things fantasy each week. We’ll be tracking injuries, byes, and double headers, and giving you tips and tricks to put forward your best possible team.

WE DID IT, JOE. We made it through our second week of epic podium quads. Next week begins the usual in-conference dual slates for most conferences. There are a few quads, but it’s a very dual-heavy week, with one notable grudge match: Ohio State hosts Michigan.

Experts Say

Each week, CGN editors will weigh in on big fantasy topics. We’ll feature them here, so you know how we’re addressing tough issues on our own teams.

This week, we’re taking a look at the Oklahoma floor lineup since Danae Fletcher’s injury. Who do our editors see in the top six moving forward? This week, 15 editors responded, with the option to vote for multiple gymnasts.

Eleven editors believe Ragan Smith will remain in the lineup.

Four think Soroya Hawthorne will keep the spot she slotted into last week.

Two think Hannah Schieble will get a turn in the lineup soon.

One sees Danielle Sievers’ only being a few weeks away from being healthy enough to compete floor.

Data Corner

Once again we have data editor Dara joining us for Fantasy Central each week. She’ll be breaking down the numbers for you with notes on routine hit rate, lineup appearance frequency and breakout performances to keep an eye on.

Hit Rate and Lineup Frequency: On vault, Arianna Patterson‘s 9.875 was her 32nd consecutive score of at least 9.800; the sixth year has gone 9.8-plus in just under 90% of her college vaults. Kylie Gorgenyi notched her 20th straight 9.8-plus score on bars with a 9.850 in the home opener. Audrey Davis, who has been in all but one beam lineup in her time as a Sooner, picked up her 40th 9.8-plus score in a row. Mya Hooten has featured in Minnesota’s floor lineup for 22nd straight meets, during which posted 20 9.9-plus scores, including a perfect 10 this weekend, and never went below a 9.825.

Breakout Performances: Transfer Sydney Schumaker snagged a 9.900 in just her second vault as a Tiger, reaching the mark for the first time on the event and improving on her previous high of 9.850 from 2022. Jordan Coleman earned a 9.925 in the season opener, improving on her previous career best by almost a tenth to set a new record for West Chester on the event. In her first competitive beam routine, Emma Andres notched a 9.900 to keep UCLA from going sub-49 for a second consecutive week. Sarah Zois, who has not been in the lineup since a miss on her event debut in 2022, posted a solid 9.875 on floor in the home opener.

Starts, Sits & Pickups for Week 2

This is the spot to find your sleeper picks, your two- or three-eventers and your solutions for those big bye weeks. We’ll also comment on the big names when relevant: Injuries, lineup absences, or inconsistency.

Vault: Ball State vault powerhouse Suki Pfister is still a fantasy darling, but her teammate Victoria Henry is proving to be the team’s vault leader so far. Natalie Martin had an excellent debut for the Terps and looks to be a mainstay in this lineup. Ute Amelie Morgan warmed up Yurchenko one and a halves before Best of Utah; she may join the lineup with the upgraded vault soon.

Bars: We need to talk about Brenna Neault. Her 7.400 performance was the result of absolutely refusing to quit on her dismount when she just couldn’t connect her toe-hand, toe-full, double tuck without falling on the full. When she finally decided to skip the full and just do her dismount, she was gassed and put her hands down. The errors seemed more endurance related than anything else, and the initial fall could’ve been related to going too hard for perfection in a five-up lineup. If you absolutely can’t suffer a low score, take her out of the lineup for now, but it seems likely that she won’t do this again. Kentucky lineups are very competitive this year. Expect the bars top six to be in flux these first few weeks; so far Hailey Davis and Cadence Gormley have tried out spots.

Beam: Good news for the Huskers, Sophia McClelland is back. She only competed beam and floor but scored a 9.900 and 9.875, respectively. Whatever kept her out last week seems to be in the past. She competed in the all-around every meet last year, so perhaps she will take Lucy Stanhope‘s lineup spots on vault and bars. If you were wise enough to draft Buckeye freshman Courtney McCann, good on you; keep her in this lineup. If she’s available in your league, keep her on your waiver radar!

Floor: Kentucky freshman Creslyn Brose is the real deal: She notched a 9.950 at Auburn, a huge away number for a freshman. Bronco Dani Petrousek added floor back to her program, where she was a regular last year, for a huge career high. She looks to be strong here this year.

Notes From the Fantasy Roundtable

We heard on the Auburn broadcast that Olivia Greaves should be back in February. Keep an eye out for her when the waiver wire opens.

Chase Brock didn’t seem to travel with LSU, based on the team’s travel photos on social media, and we don’t think Annalise Newman-Achee traveled with California.

    1. Next Thursday at Rutgers! Gymlytics fantasy weeks run from Friday to Thursday, so some teams have doubles that way even though it may not seem like a traditional one.
