There’s a lot that happens on the gymternet each week. So much so that it can be hard to keep track of it all. From training updates and COVID year announcements to recruiting rumors and coaching news, we don’t blame you for missing some important points here and there.

That’s where we come in. Last Week in College Gym is your one-stop shop for all the important headlines from the previous week in college gymnastics. No matter if you’re taking a social media break, went on vacation, or just don’t have the capacity to follow every single gymnast, team, and fan, we have you covered.

Top Storylines

Future NCAA gymnasts Compete at Central American and Caribbean Games

Three future gymnasts were at this multi-sport event in San Salvador, El Salvador. Incoming Cal freshman Annalise Newman-Achee competed for Trinidad and Tobago, finishing sixth all-around. She also qualified to the bar finals where she placed fourth for 12.200. Talladega recruit Jamelia Duffus of Jamaica scored a 34.750 in the all-around with a high score of 12.200 on vault. Sydney Barros of Puerto Rico, who is signed with UCLA, performed a beautiful floor routine but landed short on her last pass and scratched the rest of the competition. There has been no further update on her condition but there was word that she pulled out of worlds.

North Carolina Adds to Coaching Staff

The Tar Heel named Mackenzie Caquatto-Jaworski assistant coach for the upcoming season. Caquatto-Jaworski spent last season as an assistant coach at Simpson during its inaugural season and will now be stepping into the role that was previously held by Amelia Hundley for the last two seasons. She was a gymnast at Florida.

  • Clemson set up equipment in Littlejohn Coliseum for the first time as the Tigers prepare for the team’s inaugural season.
  • Recent Ursinus alum, Alyssa DeLorme, will be back with the team as an assistant coach this season. 

Training Updates

  • Rising BYU sophomore Madison Raesly-Patton is training a double layout after not competing floor in her freshman season.
  • Incoming Brown freshman Maeve McIlroy is working upgrades with a Yurchenko one and a half into the pit and free hip to Jaeger to shootover on bars. 
  • Brockport’s Lienna Kay is working a cat leap to side aerial to switch side on beam. 
  • Yale’s Lily Aucoin is working a front through to double tuck into the pit and front lay to Rudi as well. 
  • Utica’s Ainsley Pinckard is working toward a full to double tuck on bars and side aerial to full off beam. Erin Roe is training a a double layout off bars. Julia Pecora is working double tucks into the pit. 
  • Incoming Temple freshman Gianna Silva is training a side aerial to back handspring series on beam and a front full front full on floor. 
  • Rising N.C. State fifth-year Alexis Ortega is training a back one and a half to front full on the Air Track.
  • Incoming New Hampshire freshman Zoe Arthur is training a Yurchenko one and a half into the pit.
  • N.C. State star Emily Shepard posted a video of a double layout off the Air Track into the pit. 
  • Southern Connecticut’s Kylie Sitty is working toward a Shaposh on bars.
