The USAG Dismount: Week 8

What did you miss in Week 8 with USAG? Grab your coffee, grab your blanket, it was a WEEK. The Ivy Classic kept everyone on their toes, Lindenwod debuted a new leotard, and records were tied and smashed. With only a handful of weeks before these teams head off to conference championships, everyone is polishing and refining.

Superlatives

Raegan Walker

Raegan Walker is having herself a season! She once again tied the program record (one she set herself), and her efforts were rewarded with a 9.950, with one judge going for that 10.0.

Meet Fits

We’re loving meet day vibes and let us tell you, we’re loving the purple coach squad. Unrelated, where do we get a pair of sequin pants?

Debut of the Week

As a senior, Mallory Desch made her official bar lineup debut in the anchor spot, sporting a strong Jaeger and a unique stalder to double back dismount combination.

Top Meet of the Week

The Ivy Classic

Why Should You (Re)Watch? Brown upset Penn for the win, and each of the Ivy teams flashed their muscle as a warning warm up before they meet again at the GEC Championships, including a very competitive Yale bar lineup (Hello, Raegan Walker) and Brown’s floor squad (Hi, Julia Bedell). This meet proves it doesn’t matter how the season has gone, it’s about what you put on the mat today.

Are These Teams Trending Up or Down? Cornell? Third meet going 193.400 or better. Brown? Best score of the season, and second best in program history. It was neither Penn nor Yale’s best meet of the season, but it was far from the worst. Cornell and Brown continue to rise but Penn and Yale have some work to do to fix their trajectories.

Underrated Meet of the Week

Southern Connecticut, Illinois State and Pittsburgh at New Hampshire

Why Should You (Re)Watch? Southern Connecticut has been pushing the boundaries, inching closer and closer to its program record. In fact, the team has had multiple top-five performances in the last few weeks. Abby Royer was a standout performer for the team this week. Illinois State posted its second highest team score of the season, while UNH posted a season high of its own in its victory.

Are These Teams Trending Up or Down? SCSU is definitely on the rise and not losing steam any time soon. Currently the Owls are on the bubble of a team qualification to USAGs, so keep an eye on them in the coming weeks.

Editors’ Choice Meet of the Week

Brockport, Rhode Island, West Chester at Bridgeport

Why Should You (Re)Watch? Anytime you can have sem-neighboring teams meet across divisions and conferences, you’re in for a treat. With a spread across different styles of gymnastics and routines, this meet goes a little too quickly but even good things must come to an end. Oh, and Rhode Island’s Kelsey Gates took first on floor with a program record 9.900. And all of the first place finishes were a 9.775 or better.

Are These Teams Trending Up or Down? This may not have been a dream meet for any of these teams, but no one had any major obstacles. West Chester sits in seventh in the USAG rankings, but the Golden Rams face a tough field in the MIC and MPSF ahead of them. Bridgeport continues to build on last season so while things may not fully develop by conference championships, no team should let their guard down.
