Teams are finally starting to get into a groove after four weeks of competition. We saw a plethora of 197s, one 198 and even more program records fall. If you missed any of the action, don’t worry! We have superlatives, results and recaps below.
Superlatives
The Kayla Rose Award for Best Worst Mispronunciations
According to the commentary, LIU gymnasts Jah’Liyah Beermeister, Ilka Junk and Mara Takagi all competed against Cornell on Sunday. However, the Sharks got the last laugh with a season high 195.025 to snag the win over the Big Red.
Most Impressive Debut
Alabama freshman Rachel Rybicki was a last minute addition to the beam lineup—her first time competing for the Crimson Tide—and had the added pressure of following an uncharacteristic fall from lead-off Ella Burgess. Rybicki handled the stress like a veteran, snagging a respectable 9.700 and setting up the rest of the lineup for a 49.225 total.
Best Attempt at a Quad Box
I thoroughly appreciate the effort but the OCD teacher in me is SCREAMING bc these boxes aren’t the same size pic.twitter.com/8D7ks5WuoD

While we appreciate the effort of showing all four events at once (shout out to West Virginia), this is definitely one that could use a bit of improvement in the future.
Best Shoes
And so it begins!! Making this pair of comp shoes myself and had the team draw up some inspiration ideas!Gonna be fun taking in all their ideas!! @IlliniWGym pic.twitter.com/iivJfa6Sal

When we started doing this category randomly a few years ago, we never dreamed it’d be a weekly nod, yet here we are! We see you, assistant coaches! Kaitlyn Betts at Illinois has forgone heels this season, and now she’s making her own pair of kicks based on designs from the team. You can follow her progress on her social media.
Best Execution of a Throwback Theme

Some teams wear literal old leos, some go all out on the ’80s or ’90s, but Florida had the perfect mix of throwback designs with a modern twist with its new leos, warmup jackets and coaching outfits at its Friday night meet against Georgia. Full marks all around!
MVP of the Week
Tanya Chaplin
Beavs and Bruins tie with a 197.275! #GoBeavs pic.twitter.com/FLPBMoEbn5
— Oregon State Gymnastics (@BeaverGym) January 30, 2023
Tanya Chaplin arguably deserves this title. A last-minute inquiry against UCLA gave the Beavers a tie versus their Pac-12 rival after Jenna Domingo’s beam score was adjusted. At least, we think it was a tie. Everyone was confused for a little bit, even the teams competing.
