Friday night was one of the most exciting and hectic and heart-pounding and outrageous days in NCAA gymnastics history, with three teams scoring country-high 198.575s, eight perfect 10s and two additional 198-pluses. And while the following two days weren’t nearly as action-packed, they didn’t disappoint. Catch up on everything you might have missed—we certainly did with so much going on all at once!—with superlatives, recaps, results and more below.
Routine of the Week
Mara Titarsolej, LIU, Bars, 10.000
The Dutchwoman’s perfect mark is the first by a non-Power Five conference gymnast on any event in 2022 and the second scored on bars by a non-freshman. Titarsolej has been outstanding on bars this season, hitting 9.9-plus seven times with an NQS of 9.930 to sit in eighth overall.
Heartwarming Tributes
Arizona State and Centenary
Arizona State gymnasts wrote KM on the back of their necks in honor of Stanford soccer player Katie Meyer who died this week, and Centenary debuted beautiful teal leotards in honor of Ladies alumna Sylvia Keiter who passed away in 2018.
Controversy of the Week
Kentucky’s Josie Angeny’s Beam Redo
While most fans were freaking out about the thrilling Florida at Auburn dual that resulted in both teams tying at 198.575, drama encircled the Wildcats in their final rotation at LSU. Josie Angeny fell twice during her beam routine and got to redo the effort at the end of the lineup (she was originally in the No. 5 spot) due to an equipment malfunction. As a result of this or not, Kentucky ultimately defeated the Tigers 197.500 to 197.450.
Carol Score of the Week
Jocelyn Moore, Missouri, 9.925
Insert typical disclaimer about score discourse not being about the gymnasts themselves, but in Missouri’s meet at Georgia on Friday, Moore took two fairly obvious steps back out of her opening double layout, nearly stepping out of bounds. It’s safe to say viewers were pretty surprised when her score later flashed as a 9.925. To be fair, the scores were just as insane for Georgia in the next rotation.
