About Leanne
CGN’s highest-rated gymnast qualified elite in 2017 and made an immediate impact on the national stage. Later that year she was crowned American Classic champion and U.S. junior champion on vault. The following year, her final season as a junior, she became U.S. champion in the all around, the first GAGE gymnast to achieve such result. In her first year as a senior in 2019 she won the American Cup and was named to the Pan American Games team, winning gold with the team and silver on bars. As a level 10, she was the 2017 all around national champion (junior A) and holds a career-best perfect 10.0 on vault.
What She Brings to Florida
Vault
- Skill: double-twisting Yurchenko
- Results: 2018 U.S. junior national champion
- Margin of Improvement: Wong’s double-twisting Yurchenko is one of the best in the country. If we’re being super picky, we would note she crosses her feet slightly on the final half twist, yet her vault remains exceptional. She recently unveiled a solid Amanar in preparation for the Tokyo Olympics.
- Impact on the Team: Florida will have a very talented vault roster in 2022, but Wong is probably the best of all. We hope she will choose to compete her Yurchenko double, as she could be as impactful as Alex McMurtry.
Uneven Bars
- Skills: Komova II to Pak salto to Chow half, straddled Jaeger, full pirouette, double layout dismount
- Results: second place at the 2019 Pan American Games
- Margin of Improvement: Wong does not have a weak apparatus, but in elite this is perhaps her fourth strongest. She has beautiful lines, though, and will easily pull off a perfect 10.0-worthy routine in college.
- Impact on the Team: Florida will have a ridiculous bar roster next year, which will include freshmen Riley McCusker and Morgan Hurd, and seniors Trinity Thomas and Savannah Schoenherr. Wong, nevertheless, will no doubt be in contention for a lineup spot.
Balance Beam
- Skills: switch leap to straddle jump, BHS + LOSO + LOSO, full turn with leg at 90 degrees to full turn, switch ring, front aerial to ring jump, side aerial, side somi, triple twist dismount
- Results: third place at the 2019 U.S. championships
- Margin of Improvement: Except for a couple of very difficult elements that Wong will likely not bring to college, her form is immaculate and her consistency is impressive. She could become a perfect 10.0 machine.
- Impact on the Team: As with vault, Florida will be incredibly talented here, but Wong will certainly be one of the best.
Floor Exercise
- Skills: piked double Arabian, 3.5 twist, 2.5 twist to front layout, triple twist
- Results: 2018 U.S. junior national champion
- Margin of Improvement: In 2019 Wong competed insanely difficult tumbling passes, and as a result her execution suffered. At Florida, however, she will be able to downgrade and will likely incur little to no deductions.
- Impact on the Team: Wong is an incredible tumbler. She is certainly expected to make the lineup; it is just a question of which tumbling passes she’ll perform. We are very curious!
