About Jimena
Gutierrez competes both as a level 10 and as an elite for Mexico. As a level 10, she is a four-time J.O. nationals qualifier. She finished sixth in the all around in 2018 (Junior E) and seventh in 2017 (Junior B). As an elite, she competed all around at the 2019 Pan American Games and was the alternate to Mexico’s 2019 World Championships team. Her twin sister Anapaula is also a Stanford commit.
What She Brings to Stanford
Vault
- Skill: Yurchenko full
- Results: second place at the 2019 Region 3 regionals (career high)
- Margin of Improvement: Gutierrez competes a solid vault. Her body position in the air is good, and she can find the landing easily.
- Impact on the Team: Gutierrez’s Yurchenko full does not have a 10.0 start value but would be an excellent lead-off vault.
Uneven Bars
- Skills: piked Jaeger, straddle Jaeger, blind full to bail to handstand, full-in dismount
- Results: tied second place at the 2019 Colorado state meet
- Margin of Improvement: Gutierrez has some minor form issues throughout the routine, most notably on her bail, and her dismount is a bit labored. Her handstands are excellent, though.
- Impact on the Team: Despite the minor execution problems, Gutierrez will be a strong contributor on bars.
Balance Beam
- Skills: front somersault, BHS + LOSO, back tuck somersault, side somi, double tuck dismount
- Results: first place at the 2019 Colorado state meet
- Margin of Improvement: She has some knee issues throughout the routine, most notably on her acrobatic series and on some dance elements. Her set is overall dynamic, though.
- Impact on the Team: Gutierrez is slightly tentative on beam, and as a result head coach Tabitha Yim may decide to allow her to start slowly here. She will be expected to contribute to the lineup eventually, though.
Floor Exercise
- Skills: full-twisting double back/double pike, 1.5 twist to double back/double back, 2.5 twist to front tuck/front full twist to front pike
- Results: tied third place at the 2019 Colorado state meet
- Margin of Improvement: Gutierrez is both powerful and elegant on floor. Her twisting form is not the cleanest, but she performs a solid set.
- Impact on the Team: Gutierrez will be expected to be an important contributor on floor. Her level 10 routine is almost NCAA ready.
