About Anapaula
Gutierrez competes both as a level 10 and as an elite for Mexico. As a level 10, she is a two-time J.O. nationals medalist. She tied for third place on beam in 2017 (Junior B) and tied for gold on vault in 2019 (Junior F). She is also a 2018 Nastia Liukin Cup competitor and scored a 10.0 on vault at the Colorado state meet in 2019. As an elite, Gutierrez competed all around at both the Pan American Games and the World Championships in 2019. Her twin sister Jimena is also a Stanford commit.
What She Brings to Stanford
Vault
- Skill: Yurchenko 1.5
- Results: tied first place at the 2019 J.O. nationals (Junior F)
- Margin of Improvement: She has some minor knee issues in the air, but her amplitude is impressive.
- Impact on the Team: Gutierrez is expected to make the lineup from the start.
Uneven Bars
- Skills: piked Jaeger, straddle Jaeger, blind full to Pak salto, double front half out dismount
- Results: tied first place at the 2019 Colorado state meet
- Margin of Improvement: She has some leg separations on her piked Jaeger and her Pak salto, but she performs her dismount with beautifully pointed toes.
- Impact on the Team: Despite the minor execution problems, head coach Tabitha Yim should be able to choose her best skills and build a solid set to use in the lineup.
Balance Beam
- Skills: 1.5 wolf turn, BHS + LOSO, side somi, front somersault, front aerial, switch leap + switch leap half, 2.5 twist dismount
- Results: tied third place at the 2017 J.O. nationals
- Margin of Improvement: Gutierrez’s leaps are a tad short of 180 degrees and some of her acrobatic elements have a minor knee bend. Consistency is the main thing she will want to increase, though.
- Impact on the Team: Gutierrez will be expected to contribute to the beam lineup, but Yim may decide to allow her to have a slow start to build confidence first.
Floor Exercise
- Skills: triple twist, double turn held horizontal, 1.5 twist to double tuck, 2.5 twist to front layout
- Results: third place at the 2019 Region 3 regionals
- Margin of Improvement: Gutierrez’s twisting form is slightly messy, but her routine is strong.
- Impact on the Team: She will be expected to contribute on floor too, though her twists will incur a deduction.
