During the offseason, it can be difficult to keep up with all the news and training updates happening across the teams. So each week, we will provide a curation of the most exciting upgrades, as well as other important news happening in the college gym world. Note the majority of the training updates highlighted will feature new skills and not someone training their same routine from the past season, for example.
Finally, note we are only able to share links to updates posted on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook and not Instagram Stories or Snapchat. However, we will try to note any clips of note that we see on those disappearing platforms.
MyKayla Skinner Plays With Amanar
While likely just playing around during the offseason, Utah junior MyKayla Skinner posted a video of herself doing an Amanar onto a mat in the pit last week.
Grace Garcia on the Comeback Trail
Stanford sophomore Grace Garcia, who was out her freshman season due to a lower leg injury, is slowly but steadily working her way back to being 100 percent healthy. She can be seen here training a bars complex—and looks good doing it! She also is training what looks to be a straddled jaeger to immediate shoot over timer here and a blind to double front dismount here.
Blue Devils Working Bars
UW-Stout posted some exciting training updates on bars this week, including a bail from senior Kenzie Hyde and a blind to Jaeger from Mallary Dick.
Taylor Krippner Trains Beam Upgrades
Auburn senior Taylor Krippner posted a killer mixed series to her Instagram this week, showing off a cat leap to front aerial to Onodi combo that could definitely receive connection bonus come season.
Catherine Rogers Back in Bars Groove
Stanford sophomore Catherine Rogers, who only competed intermittently on bars for the Cardinal due to ankle issues, is getting back into the swing of things with a nice pak salto during summer training.
Sydney Johnson-Scharpf Trains in Gainesville
Florida freshman Sydney Johnson-Scharpf is itching to get on the competition floor, training a clean, transition-heavy bar set with her new team cheering her on.
Morgan Porter Upgrades Vault
Missouri senior Morgan Porter is training a Yurchenko one and a half to up her game for her final year as a Tiger. If it’s ready in time, she’ll join teammate Britney Ward as the only 10.0 SV vaulters on the squad.
Grace Broadhurst Making a Comeback
Denver senior Grace Broadhurst posted a full bars set to her private Instagram this week. She was out all of 2018 with a knee injury.
Caroline Caponi Trains a Double Arabian

Karley Hutchinson Trains Bars
Nebraska sophomore Karley Hutchinson posted a Geinger to her Instagram Story. Hutchinson competed vault in 2018 for the Huskers, with one floor outing as well. Bars is an event where the Huskers could have some depth issues next year, so having Hutchinson, who was fairly steady on the event in J.O., as an option would be a plus.
Maddie Karr Trains Another New Bars Skill
Denver’s Maddie Karr has been working some exciting new bars skills, and this week was no exception. The junior posted herself working a hop full on a tramp bar with a slight spot. If she can master it, it’ll be interesting to see which skills make her routine.
Haley Pitou Upgrades Vault
BYU sophomore Haley Pitou posted herself training a Yurchenko one and a half into the pit. Pitou is known for her bars work, but a 10.0 SV vault should result in more frequent lineup appearances for the sophomore, who vaulted a Yurchenko full four times last season with a season high of 9.800.
Rachael Flam Works Beam Combination
Stanford sophomore Rachael Flam, a staple in the all around for the Cardinal during her freshman year, posted a clip of her training a switch leap + switch half + back pike on her Instagram Story.
Anastasia Webb Upgrades Bars Dismount
Oklahoma sophomore Anastasia Webb recently posted herself training an upgraded second half on bars, highlighted by a new dismount. The Sooner, who competed a double front during her freshman campaign, added a half twist to the previous blind landing.
Cairo Leonard-Baker Trains Double Layout
Arizona State freshman phenom from 2018, Cairo Leonard-Baker, now a sophomore, is working to upgrade her standard double pike routine by training a double layout. We’re hoping she can add it to her already exciting routine in 2019!
McKenna Kelley Hot on the Comeback Trail
LSU’s McKenna Kelley has apparently been cleared for at least basic tumbling, as she’s been spotted on her Insta Story doing a round-off back handspring back tuck to a mat in the pit this week. She is expected to redshirt last year due to injury, making this her junior season.
Bailey Ferrer Learns New Vault
Expected to join the team in January, LSU freshman Bailey Ferrer seems to already know that she’ll have to bring the difficulty to make the Tiger vault lineup. She’s getting a leg up now by training an Omelianchik, a new vault for her, posted to her Insta Story this week.

Morgan Porter is going to be a redshirt junior, so this is not her final season.
Omelianchik is not a new vault for Ferrer.
